“Wonderful Honeymoon”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

My husband and I spent a week at the Barcelo Corralejo Bay for our honeymoon and we absolutely loved it.
After a very busy year with backpacking in SE Asia, wedding planning and buying a house, our requirements for the honeymoon were these:
*Sun
*Spa
*Food
*No kids
*Total relaxation
This hotel ticked all the boxes (Not that it could control the weather of course!)
We chose the Barcelo firstly based on it being an adults only hotel, then based on reviews on trip advisor from other honeymooners.
The staff were occasionally a little abrupt, but perfectly helpful and the domestic staff were simply lovely! We were greeted in our room to a bottle of bubbly and chocolate dipped strawberries alongside a note wishing us a happy marriage - great touch!
The room was great, bright and airy, plenty of space and such an oh so comfortable bed! Fantastic shower and lovely, deep bath for relaxing in. I'm glad we went for the basic double room because the quality of the other facilities meant we didn't need anything fancier. Tea and coffee was provided, as well as the usual toiletries which were of a good quality.
The food was a large buffet for breakfast and tea - serving a decent variety of nice food at all times. I think we may have become bored of the evening food if staying longer than a week, but for an all inclusive buffet it was better than I had maybe expected.
Lunch was freshly cooked to order in the pool bar and was delicious - You must try the DIY pizzas as they were some of the best pizzas we'd ever come across!
The swimming pools were nice and we didn't have too much trouble finding loungers, although people were queuing at silly o'clock in the mornings to 'save' loungers before breakfast, which I think staff should clamp down on.
The spa was wonderful. It looks quite small, but actually has everything you need for a day of total relaxation and all for 15 euros each. We loved it so much we had 2 spa days, although we didn't have any treatments. There was a large jacuzzi, a pool that went in and outside, a really fun shower maze, a steam room, sauna and my favourite part - a heated relaxation pool which was almost pitch black and had soothing music playing. Very nice!
The entertainment wasn't really our thing, except for the African acrobats, who were brilliant! The hotel did host some kind of club night, which was exceptionally noisy until about 2am and did keep us and many other guests up. I'm not sure if that's a regular event but in our opinion it really isn't suitable for a hotel which is predominantly booked by people wanting a quiet holiday.
The free shuttle to Oliva Beach and the sand dunes was a fantastic bonus and the hotel was within easy walking distance to all the main facilities that Corralejo has to offer.
Thank you to the Barcelo Corralejo Bay for a wonderful honeymoon.

We do not usually stay in hotels on our holidays but splashed out to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. Stayed half board for 10 days and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Our room was fine including the bathroom (and its facilities).
The food, in terms of quality and variety were excellent for both breakfasts, but especially for dinners. Don't miss the Jazz Night gourmet meal on either the Wednesday or Saturday evening.
The staff were friendly throughout and explained everything very well on our arrival. They always kept a smile - even though some of the older British guests did appear to enjoy moaning for moaning's sake!!
The hotel was very close to a sandy beach, whilst the main town was only a short walk away.
A variety of daily activities were provided free of charge for guests. Musical acts performed on a number of evenings, although turning down the volume settings for some of these would have been welcomed!
Overall we had a really relaxing holiday in a very good hotel - for us the Corralejo Bay was a great choice.
We will certainly return.

We stayed here for 7 nights. The hotel is nice and in a quiet location but is very close to both the beach and the Main Street in Corralejo. The restaurant had a wide selection of food and it was good quality. Rooms were good though could probably do with a make over in the not too distant future. The Animation team were great and made sure there was always something to get involved with if you wanted to and Nev makes a really good cocktail! Bar staff were very pleasant and service was always spot on. The comments re the sunbed are still relevant, even in October. People booking beds at 9.00am but not actually using them until much later. Pathetic when you consider the beach is only 100 metres away!! All in all we really enjoyed our stay at the Barcelo Corralejo Bay and we would definitely recommend it.

Overall a good experience, but there are a few areas where they could improve.

This is an adults only hotel, and as such does attract more than its fair share of the miserable FSP (Final Salary Pensioner) crowd. They are often seen sour faced complaining about petty issues that the average person wouldn't even notice. If you are younger than about 35, this is not the hotel for you unless you have a passion for Tea, Elvis and other random 60's music.
If you have never stayed at an adults-only resort before, the silence takes some getting used to, but is something you will soon get to enjoy and probably want more of. :-)

The (Superior) rooms were ok overall, although the bathrooms need updating as they have grotty tiling and rust around the bath/fittings. The superior rooms were not as big as the photos suggest and the fridge was not cold enough to store perishable food or milk. We didn't have any problems with noise except for a deaf neighbour who liked their TV on full volume in the evening.

Only went B&B so can't comment on Dinner, but the breakfast was generally good and worth taking with plenty of choice.

Sunbeds... I personally think their system works quite well. Basically, the pool area is cordoned off until 09:00am sharp. This means that some of our European counterparts are unable to reserve Sunbeds at 05:00 in the morning, thereby giving every nationality a fair chance. So, to get yourself a decent sunbed or two, simply be ready with your towel(s), at the poolside entrance at 08:45 and you get the pick of the bunch. Don't forget to grab a parasol and table, as they are quite a valuable commodity later in the day. One other secret (not anymore) is that the pool furthest away from the hotel is heated, and much warmer than the other.

Drinks are not too expensive given the location.

I don't think the Spa is free unless you have a Wellness Room so don't expect to use it without paying.

Room Tip: Get ready to claim your sunbeds at 08:45am.

I am writing this review as a single traveller having spent three weeks here on a Thomas Cook AI package. In three weeks I think it is fair to say that you get to know a place pretty well!.
First Thomas Cook-not very happy with them.I came out here with them two years ago and they have not improved at all.The leg room on their aircraft is ridiculously small -a 4 hour flight is hardly short haul!.In addition on leaving the Airport you have to drag your luggage most of the way around the Coach Park to get to their Bus Stand which quite a few elderly people found quite a struggle in the heat.
The hotel is OK and has basically three things going for it:-
1) Kids Free Zone- nothing wrong with kids but if you have come to the time in your life where you want some space then this place ticks all the boxes. In consequence guests are in the older age category and which reflects itself in low key entertainment etc and the odd Mobility Scooter!
2) Location- excellent! The hotel is an oasis of peace and quiet but a two minute walk gets you to the main drag with all the shops bars and restaurants etc.
3) Quality-not bad provided you manage your expectations-but with some negatives.
If you are going on the AI package for say two weeks then two suggestions.First factor in some spending money for a few "breakout meals" during your stay as there are meal issues here which I mention later.Secondly early in your stay register for the Jazz Night gourmet meal. The Rep and the Hotel do not mention this and you are entitled to one visit per stay and which at least gives you a different dining experience. These meals take place on a Wednesday and Saturday night but have to be booked at Reception.I talked to a number of guests who missed this opportunity because as I say it is not well published.
The staff in the hotel are first class. They speak good English are very polite and enjoy a good banter with guests.I made a specific room request prior to departure and was well satisfied with the allocation on arrival. The hotel is of modern construction consists of approximately 250 rooms built in a three storey complex overlooking the pools at the rear.About ten of the rooms are "Wellness Rooms" which are connected to the Spa and have their own private sunbathing areas and Hot Tubs and obviously cost more. The hotel environment is well maintained and kept clean to high standards.
The hotel was previously family run and was taken over by the Barceló Chain about three years ago and I guess that is where some of the criticisms begin to creep in.It is clear that Barceló have not put any money into the hotel during that period. In consequence some of the communal areas whilst clean are starting to look a little tired. In particular whilst the bedrooms are good and the sleep quality excellent the bathrooms are not good. The one to my room had cracked tiles and very dirty grouting and was in need of a complete make over! This was not a "holiday breaker" by any means but somewhat disappointing. If you visit you will see what I mean.I think that the biggest negative for me must relate to the to the dining experience operated at the hotel and which after all is a very important part of your AI package.Breakfasts are taken in the main Restaurant and I would defy anyone to try and get a warm fry up! The eggs are cooked to order but the rest on the servery is just not warm! In other hotels I have stayed in throughout the Canaries they have a couple of Microwave Ovens in the Restaurant that you can put your food in and at least give it a boost -but for some reason not here.Lunches on the other hand are served at a separate restaurant above the Pools. These are cooked to order off a set menu with plenty of choices and in my view were very good.Evening meals are served in the main Restaurant which I found to be repetitive of limited quality and frankly with meats either under or overcooked in many instances.I also heard heard other guests making similar comments.I have honestly had better dining experiences in other Canarian Hotels.
In overall terms I would probably give the total holiday experience about seven out of ten but the meals factor no more than six for the reasons given. So to the big questions-would I recommend and would I go again?
Yes I would recommend-provided you manage your expectations and remember that this is really a very good three star hotel which just, and only just dips into the four star category! Would I go again-No, but in fairness I never do as I prefer to sample different hotel experiences.
This hotel has a lot of pluses and a lot going for it and it is a pity therefore that it lets itself down in some material areas. It clearly enjoys a lot of repeat business mainly from the UK and which is a good sign but sadly that means that this hotel will remain in its comfort zone and not deal with some important issues.I would say that if Barceló were to do some very simple but important improvements this hotel would probably be one of the best in Fuerteventura.
I hope that this honest review will help you to decide how to spend your hard earned cash!Whatever your decision if you were to decide to visit here I do not think that you will return disappointed-Bon Voyage!

Room Tip: Third floor room overlooking Pools

The hotel is first class. From the welcome on our arrival to our departure. We came in October on half board and weather wise at least it seems to be an ideal time. The location is near the town centre, around 6 or 7 minutes walk and about 10 minutes to the harbour and music square. There's loads of rock bars if you like live music, but we found Rock Island as exceptional. The pool area was so quiet and relaxing, as was the spa area. The rooms are large and well set out with large balconies. There was evening entertainment which was of the standard you would expect from a hotel of this quality and drink prices were not OTT. The buffet evening meals were very good with plenty of variety, although after 5 days we were itching to try one of the restaurants in the town centre. The breakfasts were again what you would expect, apart from our last day. We were leaving quite early and so went to the restaurant at 0745 to find that surprisingly, there were very few tables available as they had not cleared away from the night before and there were dirty plates, etc still on the table and mess on the floor. This was just a small hiccup in what was otherwise a great week away.

Room Tip: Top floor overlooking the pool of sea.
