Another great holiday at the Amaika. Food great, staff friendly. Only 50 yards from the beach. Been to this hotel several times over the last few years and never been disappointed. Also very central for shops and restaurants.

We just got back from a 7 days stay in H Top Amaika which was recommended us by the Travel Agency as a four stars hotel in Calella, Spain.
The location was good: very close to the beach, near to city shopping center, 15 minutes from train station (important if you planned to go in Barcelona for a trip).
We expected to find a four stars hotel and we were unpleasant surprised to enter a little room with 3 beds, old furnished, with smell of mold. Very disappointed we look for identifying the source of the odor: it was the bathroom and also from the furniture which was: old and skinned, beds with textile and the sponge ripped leaving to see the wood. These things of beds were hidden by long bedspreads. The third was a foldaway bed very uncomfortable.
Thinking by room size and bathroom and by the quality of the furniture, we are wondering how it could be classified as a four star hotel. Probably since it was opened, maybe 20 years ago (?!), it wasn’t recertified. Or maybe the standards in Spain are well below those known in other EU countries?
We have consoled by the fact that the balcony offered a little sea view (being at the 8th floor and above the hotel located only at about 20 m distance, cross the street) and the ancient towers of a fortress, on top of the hill. Nice view.
From the top we could see also the swimming pool, in fact very small for a hotel with about 400 rooms and….4 stars (we have not ever succeeded to do swim in the pool, always really very crowded).

After the first night of nightmare, when we couldn’t rest because of the smell(the balcony door must stay closed for functioning air conditioning ), first time in the morning we kindly ask to the receptionist woman to change our room with another free, on the same floor, which we visited and which smelled not. She told us to speak with the manager of the receptionists, after 9 o’clock. So we had to wait. Meanwhile we had the breakfast (frighteningly disgusting by the way…) and we return to the reception desk to speak with the manager.
She said that the only room that she could give us for exchange is on the 5th floor. We visited and the smell was the same. Furthermore it was closer to the swimming pool and the terrible noise and the only view was the cross street hotel (no sea, no hill…)
So we decided to ask for the room on the 8th floor which was free. She raised her voice at us and told us she needed that room today because will arrive tourists. “But we are also tourists and we arrived yesterday. Please come to see our room. We can’t stay for 7 nights in these conditions, with our 12 years old daughter. We fly miles away for to find this kind of accommodation!” said my husband. She refused to come to see de room, arguing that she has other assigns: to stay on the reception desk, to serve the customers (?!?) and call for the plumber man to go in our room. We go up together and my husband close the bathroom door and ask the plumber to stay there for 5 minutes. He gave us right, the smell was horrible and he came back with some deodorant bath and sink sloppy solution. My husband told him that no perfume in the world will solve the problem because it is from the upside, from the pipes place, which was full of mold and should be cleaned and covered tightly. The plumber leaves the room with no word for us and we wait for his return at least 30 min. We understood that he probably will not coming back soon, so we decided to go to the beach (after all it was almost 11 o’clock and we did not want to risk losing a whole day waiting for responsible persons to solve the problem).
When we arrived at the reception desk we bumped into the receptionist manager, visible nervous. We told her that we decide to keep our room if they clean the mold and seal the cover of the pipes. She told us that we have to pay the damages (?!?!).
In that moment my husband got angry and asked to speak with the hotel manager. “Of course!” exclaimed the woman, with a strange happiness in her voice. And she asked for the Hotel Manager, who was behind the door.
Like in a theatre play in three acts, Mr Manager appears: an elderly man, small in stature, dressed on ship captain and with a pissed figure. He didn’t wait for us to tell anything and visibly irritated told us that if we don’t like it is our problem, we must live the hotel! He informed us that he call our travel agency representative to come and pick up to another place!

Was our patience exposed to a test or something like that? We couldn’t believe what we just heared! It was not a problem for us to go anywhere else, but where? This hotel, Top Amaika, seemed to be one of the 2-3 four stars hotels which exist in Callela! The thought that we could reach even worse conditions gave me the creeps!
My husband was in fire so I changed the tactic: I told the Manager that we are very happy with this hotel and we want only to solve the problem in our bathroom. I kindly asked him to see the room and I convinced him to see our room. So we’ve gone upstairs-this, time with the Manager. Probably he didn’t visit the rooms for very long time ago because he didn’t know how to use the card-key (). Finally he succeeds to turn on the light from our bathroom and when he saw the pipes he told us that we broke the cover and we have to pay. Luckily I took some pictures before and after the plumber visits and I showed them. He finally understand that we didn’t broke anything and our only fault was the fate: to be there at that time -because we were recommended this hotel for our dream holiday…() and he promised that after 2-3 hours we will find a clean, smell less bathroom
So on that day we arrived at the beach after 12 o'clock, which is not at all recommended, especially for the first day of sun exposure! Not mention the bad mood that we had for all the rest of the day.
As he promised the problem was solved, but yet I still fail to understand why we had to bear that entire circus on our money and our time. It is clear that on the first place for the hotel’s managers are not the customers and the quality of the services. They did not show interest about the condition of the rooms, as well as of the quality of the food-which was plenty, but bad taste industrially processed (even the coffee and juices at breakfast were chemicals).
Maybe if we did not have the unpleasant experience of the first day, we could overlook all others: that the towels were much worn, no longer know if the original color was white or gray, the bad food, the noise and bustle of the restaurant (I think it was a constant battle to reach the plates of food…), lack of space at the pool…
I definitely not recommend this hotel. It was a bad experience, probably hard to forget.

I fill the feedback form and I really hope that they’ll make some changes (even if my husband assures me that is only a sheet of paper already on the recycle bin).

We just got back from all inclusive holiday in Amaika. First of all, if you’d like a quiet/quiet- ish place to stay in Costa Brava, Calella is the best option. Calella is old and not overpopulated town on the cost, nearest to Barcelona. It has a lot of shops and places to eat and by the way, much cheaper than in other towns. There are some nightclubs, but they are mostly faced on to the beach side, therefore you can hear only flamingo or Spanish music at eve. Our hotel was also close to the beach but we didn’t hear any disturbances from the young crowd in night time. Secondly, HTOP Amaika is immaculately clean and run with care. Although our bathroom needed a little facelift, but our cleaner Dolores used to scrub it every day thoroughly. The room was cleaned and towels were changed daily. All reception clerks were very polite and efficient, always pleased to help. Our special thank you to Agneshka and Cyrel, they help us mostly time. Food was very good, plenty to choose from, fish poultry, steaks were very tasty, plenty for veggie choses and deserts were hard to resist. All staff worked their utmost, because in between the main feeding hours, restaurant offers a snack service till 11-30pm, plus if you for some reason missing your launch you can order it as a pack lunch, which is very convenient for excursions. And one more benefit you can hop to other HTOP hotel for any meal if you want to be more adventurous. Pool is small but facing the sun. Sandy beach is basically next door, we preferred to go there and be closer to the nature. Otherwise you can easily use other HTOP hotel pools, which are not far. We would like to send our special thanks to Ignacio and Alberto at the restaurant; Christian, Kassia and Ionna at the bar. We are greatful to all hotel staff and management for their hard work which made our holiday enjoyable and special.

Room Tip: Room on the pool side is quieter and sunny, for adults and family with big kids I recommend to get...

Have just returned today after holiday at this hotel, we found it lovely staff nothing was to much trouble for them. Rooms cleaned everyday. Plenty of food to choose from so you never go hungry. We went A/I and found it so easy you had a card like a credit card and they just swiped it when you went for drinks. It was the height of the season but was not to busy. Would go there again as very close to beach.

Room Tip: Ask for room above level 3 as lovely views.

My husband and I stayed here last year for a weeks holiday. It is an old hotel and it isn't 4 star but it is ok for a weeks break. Calella is quite pretty around the square and is quite near to Barcelona so its a good base. The holiday was very cheap and we enjoyed the good weather.

Dear Mr Saunders, We are very sorry if your experience was not as pleasant as we would have like. It’s true that the swimming pool has a small size, but there is a beach closed to the hotel, just 1 minute walking. Best regards,

Most of the staff was really friendly. The location is very good as it is very close to the beach and market/shops/restaurants.
There were activities available within the hotel but you have to inquire as you are not told in detail about them.
Variety of food was available with different menu everyday. It would be helpful if halal food and vegetarian options are made available. And these should be separate and clearly labelled.
The room was nice and made up everyday. The towels were quite thin and most of them passed their life.
Bathroom was OK but clearly needed maintenance and upgrade which could be a bit frustrating.
Swimming pool was quite small as compared to the hotel.
Halal and vegetarian food options should be available.
Maintenance is definitely required in bathrooms.
Overall good experience.
It is a nice area but its a pebble beach (near the sea water) which can be frustrating so better take a good pair of appropriate footwear or find a close by sandy beach.

Room Tip: Higher floors are quieter.
