“Lets be fair to Amaika”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 March 2009

Arrived thursday 26th for a three night birthday break with my partner. I have to agree with the majority of reviews on this hotel however I do feel some are being slightly unfair. Our room was facing the road works and yes they did commence work from approx 7.30 - approx 20.00 hrs but we were not really affcected by this unless we opened the balcony door. One evening we did notice a sewage smell but it never lasted for long. Also the on arrival the room had a very strong disinfectant smell but this lightened up over the next days I believe the cause is because they give the room a real thorough cleanse when new guests arrive.the rooms have twin beds and I found the shower was rather small but other than this rooms were fine .
The staff were very welcoming and accomodating to us throughout. The bar staff were very busy which is why they probably do not engage in much conversation - the drinks were what is to be expected when you go all inclusive you can pay extra for named brands if you wish. There is a lovely dining room and again we found the staff to be accomodating .As for the food yes they did have some unusual savory dishes such as pigs trotters pigs kidneys and pigs cheeks however theses are probably delicaies for the spanish ! They also had some british classics such as roast beef ,roast pork, roast chicken ,tuna steaks so overall there was a variety to be eaten .Baring in mind the hotel was 50 per cent ( loud ) spanish pensioners and the other 50 per cent british we felt that they were very fair with the menu. One thing I have noticed with visiting spanish islands is that they do like their pork and you can expect to see this on the menu at lunch and dinner amongst other dishes. Entertainmnet thursday was flamenco dancers whilst friday and saturday were discos - better than nothing and you have itv available in your room if you need to catch your soaps. We booked the private use of sauna and jacuzzi and I advise you to do the same also make the effort to go to montjuic to see the majic fountains (absolutely beauitiful and amazing) If you read the reviews then you will go to the Amaika with a true view of what to expect therefore no disappointments.

So here goes -

Flights - Ryanair, cheap and cheerful, no delays, easy check in (hand luggage only). 8/10
Transfers - Taxi, expensive although straight forward (60 euro,s each way). 6/10
Hotel - Clean and functional, food ok, rooms were nice, service was ok ish (hotel a bit cramped) 6/10

However, if your not All Inclusive then be prepared to be heavily charged for most things. Drinks are 1.90 euro for half of lager, 6.50 for a vodka and lemon. I asked about an upgrade to AI and it would have cost 168 euro for 2 people. The hotel even had the cheek to charge 10 euro a day parking and 1 euro to weigh your cases before leaving for the airport. The internet cafe area is available in the smoking lounge (if you can find them through the smog), so expect your kids to come back from holiday on 20 Bensons & Hedges a day.

Away from the hotel coffee in most cafe's was 2.75 euro, 90% of the shops were charging top whack for food and clothes (of which most were substandard) even in the markets. They wanted 4 euro for a 5 litre bottle of drinking water in the local shop. Im not a big drinker but one evening i quite fancied a pint of John Smiths Smooth, i eventually found a nice irish pub who charged me 4.50 euro for the pleasure (it was lovely tho but i only had 2).

I think as a result of the spanish greed and the poor exchange rate, Calella is slowly dying on its feet. Many shops, bars and cafe's were run down and left in dis-repair. Most holiday makers stay in their hotels and utilise the AI facilities. One chap in our hotel had only been out once in 2 weeks, needless to say he was drunk as a handcart 24/7.

Which brings me onto my last rant, I dont like to admit it but sometimes i am truly ashamed to be british. H.Top hotels have 3 hotels in Calella, the Olympic 3*, the Calella Princess 4* and the Amiaka 4* all of which were 75% full of constantly drunk, noisy, rude, idiotic british guests whose ambition was to consume as much alcohol as was humanly possible whilst ever they were awake. One man, who if he reads this will know who he is (or then maybe not) was so drunk at evening meal (19.30) he passed out head first into his plate of food, sending the contents in all directions. The other 25% non alcohol dependant guests really felt for the poor waitress who had to clean up atfer him.

I didnt pay much for my stay, £100 per person HB for 7 nights. So whats my problem you might ask, well i wouldn't pay £10 per person to go back. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful and they deserve a medal. The hotel itself is an average 3* and nothing more.

Its a tough one to ask if i would recommend this hotel. I personally didnt like Calella, the Amaika or the Costa Brava for that matter. But if your one of the 75% then go for it.

the hotel is really beautiful and clean, rooms lovely, most of the staff friendly but some wouldnt give you the time of day.
food was cold and some days disgusting eg (pigs trotters and cows liver),pork was served every day for lunch and dinner.same desserts were served everyday..not usually picky eaters but some of the food i wouldnt serve to my dogs it was disgusting and half cooked,if you can live on salads all week then this is the place for you.food needs more variety and to be warmer
location was good ,train station only 15 mins walk away.
this time of year though not alot of tours going on,they were advertising monserat but this was not available till after easter.
did notice that the area was very expensive only cheap stuff available was tobacco ,other stuff was cheaper to buy at home.
we alos noticed the hotel catered for the spanish more than any other nationals.
there is also major roadworks going on outside the hotel from 7am till late and by the looks of it will be going on for some time yet
the hotal only has 32 sunbeds available for the whole hotel which holds over 350 people.
i am sure you can do the maths .swimming pool very small.
OVERALL BEAUTIFUL HOTEL LET DOWN REALLY BADLY BY THE FOOD.

had great week at Top Almika hotel went with my mum for a cheap week away, really nice see it on the internet before we went was everything we expected when we arrived clean lovely decor, helpful friendly staff could of had a bit more choice in food as a lot of it was repeated. plenty of shops nr hotel right near the beach so all in all a good location with a train running regular in easy reach of all other resorts. overall a very good value for money holiday. met lots of nice people there a few english bars not far from hotel just round corner so when evening entertainment finished there is other places to go for a good night out. margaret Wisbech

This hotel was booked for a short break after being recommended, and although the hotel itself was spotlessly clean, with friendly staff we consider that the choice of the food had deteriorated since last year which was when our friends went there. For a 4 star hotel we didn't expect to see such things as pig's cheeks, or kidneys, and there was a distinct lack of seafood. Tinned vegetables appeared for an evening meal and the desserts were repetitious, as was the tinned pineapple which appeared for breakfast day after day.
The massive drainage and road works being undertaken on the road next to the hotel meant that there was machinery noise from just gone 7oc in the morning, all day.
A good holiday was had, but it could have been better.

As stated in the title, the rooms smelt awful. We arrived past midnight for our first nights stay after a late flight. We entered the room to the smell of an open sewer, it was awful. The room was neat and tidy with no obvious source for the smell but it remained throughout our 3 night stay. The cleaners masked it for a few hours with lemon scented chemicals but it just came back. Not nice at all, certainly not like ANY 4star hotel Ive stayed in before.
Food, I realise that 99% of the people that stay on the costa brava/maresme are extremely overweight, british/german, smoking and drinking people that just want to get a horrendous case of sunburn but please, please Amaika and H.Top, put somthing healthy on your menu. The food consisted of carbohydrates and fat which isnt great for anyone. The 'greens' were either shredded, soggy, old lettuce or tins of marrowfat peas (only one night). There were lots of potatos, pasta, rice, chips, burgers some curry and lots of gloop for desert. Im not being picky, most people go there to get sunstroke and get ratted but after 2 days/3 nights of this food I felt sick and bloated as there was nothing good for you in sight.
Location wise the hotel was top drawer, just a street back from the beach which is a good thing due to the beachside railway line to barcelona (well worth a trip, dirt cheap and you go to barcelona to remind yourself that brits havnt ruined all of the spanish coastline). The staff were extremely helpful, polite and attentive and the gym was actually quite well equipped for a brit hotel.
All in all I would go back to a different room, stay on a bed and breakfast basis but only at this time of the year, I can imagine calella would be horrendous once even more british whales arrive. Would I reccommend it, only if it was a cheap cheap deal like we took. I wouldnt pay more than £100 for a 3nights break with flights for this place.

Close to beach, well apointed and clean. Lovely decor, themed around the Titanic. Went for a cheap and cheerful all inclusive break last week Feb-1st week March. The resort was quiet, but more shops etc opened on 1st March. I like quiet and it suited us just fine. Quiet beaches, nice cafes, and apart from the odd inconsiderate drunk who noisily returned to their rooms in the early hours for the first few nights of our stay we had a very pleasant stay. The food was fair, and plenty of it, and they provided a packed lunch to take with us on our two visits to Barcelona, so money spent was kept to a minimum. Would definitely consider returning for a welcome break from the british winter next year.
