“Reasonable hotel with 4* touches but not quite there in my opinion”
Reviewed 1 May 2014

We stayed at this hotel on an "allocation on arrival basis" and we stayed on a great cheap deal which went a way to compensate for some of the negatives regarding this hotel.
I do feel that some reviews are a little harsh, but everyone is entitled to their opinion :) The best way I can review this hotel is with a pro and con list as to what is important to myself.
Pros: fair off beach location and no noise from the town, beach and town both no more than a 5 minute walk.
Good quality family entertainment if you have no desire to leave the hotel, children in particular are exceptionally well entertained by the animation team. We saw the "reptile show" which was funny, entertaining and interactive.
Food - this is a topic that has been talked about unfavourably but I thought it was better than expected by means of presentation, rotation at service, labelling etc. Of course items were repeated and left over concoctions made but its a business and its what you have to do! Yes pork does feature quite heavily but there is still enough choice! The kitchen staff were on it all the time replenshing and reorganising.Failing that there are many places to eat out to actually discover Catalonia.
The youngish (French??) chap on reception was very good - didnt catch his name as their badges are crap.
Very comfortable beds with heating and air con, extra pillows and blankets, black out curtains too.
Hot water, a great supply pressure is amazing on the 2nd floor but understandably not so on the 6th. Nice size bedrooms with full length mirrors and good lighting, lots of wardrobe space
Public toilet areas plentiful and clean
Nice on site souvenir/convenience shop
Good selection of supplied toilettries
Cracking roof terrace for over 18's with 3 jacuzzis with a good view of the town
Cons: Shocking system for AI drinks! Choice acceptable but service lacking and the fact we were not allowed to use if after 12 midday not even for water despite leaving at 18.00 was definately not 4* nor was the fact as we had lunch on arrival (at 1pm) this meant that we could not have lunch on departure. No free wifi, absolutely appalling and unexpected for a "4" I paid for the service (allowable on 1 device only) and the connection was at least good. No towel offered as advised for the departure shower. Sunbeds and parasols chargeable on the H top section of beach
Payable safe? Come on! Maybe in a 3* downwards but again not a 4*
The absolute bug bear I have and the reason I believe this hotel is not getting the credit where is it deserved is the " German/Dutch students" in the hotel at the time we stayed, like so many others the disruption suffered and rudeness experience when in the restaurant was totally unacceptable. The travelling adults didnt appear to care and I saw no sign of management reining them in! If this hotel wants to grow and prosper I strongly suggest that these groups are encouraged to stay at the 3* hotel in the same chain across the street! I understand business is business but someone needs to decide where exactly to pitch this hotel as you cant move everyone that is complaining! The walls are very thin and low levels here all the restaurant, bar and low level noise from the marble stairs.
We were there for my 40th - a milestone birthday and nothing at all was done to acknowlege this by the hotel which in my experience is a rarity. It was advised by the tour operator and us on arrival but it may as well been in wookie lol. Just would have been a nice touch.
Would I return? Yes the town was excellent and the hotel was ok for the price we paid, but I would not pay more. Would I recommend it? Yes but not to someone that knows what to expect from a 4* accomodation.

Room Tip: Any room above level 4! The higher the better and if you get away from poolside even better! Use th...

Unsure whether it was because of the time of year or if it is like it constantly but i found the area surrounding the hotel very unpleasant and unwelcoming. It felt as though the hotel had just been built in the middle of wastelands in Spain that nobody was interested in. I have visited many other areas of Spain and none of them were like this area. We had a problem with the light in our room as when we turned it on once it blew the electrics in the room and even gave an electric shock. We went to reception to try to resolve this issue and the staff did not even attempt to be polite and made me feel like I was causing a huge inconvenience for them - even though it was a fault of the hotel not ours. The staff behind the bar near to the pool were pleasant, I did not get the chance to speak with them much but I think they would have altered my opinion on the service if I had. The man who greets you as you go for food was lovely, as he recognised our faces we even began to have inside jokes! Very lovely, lifted the mood of the holiday when we saw him. One of the only positive things about this hotel was the food, as it was an all inclusive holiday we had our meals included. Some of the food was very basic but there was other items that were enjoyable. When booking this holiday, we were told that we would have plenty to do on our stay and would not really need to leave the hotel. However, the outdoor swimming pool was so cold that it was impossible to swim in. The indoor pool was so small and full of misbehaving children that we could not go in it. The gym facilities were terrible and only had old equipment that seemed to be in terrible condition. There were not a lot of activities for the children - despite them claiming that there was - so they seemed to be roaming around making a lot of noise and misbehaving. On our first day at the hotel, we were sleeping late because of the travelling and decided to put a do not disturb sign on the door. I was rudely awoken by a member of the housekeeping staff pulling my foot and shouting telling me to wake up. I would not expect this kind of treatment when I am paying to stay at a place. Another time when we decided to do this, we locked our door as well as putting a do not disturb sign on the door. The cleaners knocked the door constantly and very loudly until I woke up and let them in - if I am asking not to have this service, I would appreciate not having it as it is only benefiting me! A trip to Barcelona on one of the days made us realise how terrible the area and hotel is.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel typically have a rubbish view, opt for rooms overlooking the pool if...

Brilliant setting, good views, lovely surna and jacuzzi. Only bad thing walls are slightly thin and food isn't amazing if you are a fussy eater. Bar staff are lovely and has a brilliant English bar 2 seconds away. 5 minute walk to beginning of shops and the beach. Lots of nightlife too.

this hotel is fine it is nice and clean food plentyful and a good choice and also hot majority of staff were nice . but the only bad review would be the students it really would help if peeps were made aware of them being at the hotel in march before booking the noise was really really bad and went on untill 3.00 am and over every night the walls are paper thin in the rooms so every little noise was heard they were playing ball in the rooms and corridors running through the hotel scream shouting ect banging doors and no sigh of the adults in charge !!!!!!. hotel was quick to sort out complaints from peeps though as many peeps on floors 2 and 3 made several complaints. other than that and a case of you can servive on 3 hrs kip a day then it is worth the money

Room Tip: try top floor seems they didnt get to hear what the rest of us had to edure

Dear Mark,

Thank you to help us with your review. We’re very disappointed for the inconvenience caused for the noisy students. College students come to spend their holidays at this hotel, we try to separate both type of clients. Even we have a special staff working at night to avoid any problem. Our main objective is to make our clients happy.

Best regards

We booked this knowing it was the normal Spanish all inclusive, we were however pleasantly surprised and pleased with our choice. This is about an hour from Girona airport in a coach but a taxi may be 45 minutes, we were quoted 70 euros one way so were pleased we had booked a shuttle online £65 return for 3 adults and a child. Really nicely presented hotel, in fact I would say it looked the nicest in Calella. Check in routine stuff but they charge a room tax on arrival ?? never known this before. You get a glass card and an all inclusive card per guest, you need to present both at the bar. Only one drink per card makes life a lot easier at the bar and there are no glasses left on tables etc as you don't get another drink without returning your glass. There is a little grey haired barman who was really lovely and once he got to know your face would allow you to just show one card. Great choice of drinks and the wine was nice which is unusual for all inclusive.

Food choice was immense. Normal Spanish bacon at breakfast but great English sausages and the beans were good, cooking station at the bottom of the dining room did freshly fried eggs and pancakes. Choice at all meal times was really good. Even chilled cava available at breakfast time. We didn't have the snacks so can't comment on them. You'd be hard pushed not to like something.

Rooms quite big, plasma on the wall and plenty of storage space. We were on floor 6 and the view from the balcony was lovely. Rooms cleaned every day however we did find the maid to be quite rude and moved all our things around, even took down my birthday cards !

There is a roof terrace with a lot of sunbeds and 3 Jacuzzis. No pool on roof as in some Google pictures. There is also an inside little pool, Jacuzzi and sauna, didn't use it but looked well maintained. Outside pool was just standard. There is also a little kids pool. The majority of the sun beds are in the shade and the sun doesn't come round to them til about 3pm so the majority go to the bottom area near the play park and kids pool, so quite noisy.

We got the train from Calella station to Barcelona, 8 euro's each return, takes an hour but is on the line runs along the coast so is a nice trip.Trains run every half hour up til midnight. We got off at Placa Catalunya which is at the top of Las Ramblas and from there you can get the hop on and off bus. 27 euros each, worth every penny as it takes in all the major sights which are widely spaced apart.

We also did Camp Nou - 23 euros each. Brilliant value as you get to see the trophies, a history of the club, you can sit in the stands, go in the visitors changing rooms etc. Beware of the shop, its very very expensive 95 euros for a kids shirt. We got one from the guys outside the grounds for 45 but you can get them cheaper, we just have a very particular 9 year old who knows which logo's should be where etc.

So all in all great and we would return to this hotel, ask for high floor for the views.

hotel is clean and well maintained, staff are helpful and speak good english.
rooms were clean and also well maintained apart from the air conditioning which would always come out warm.
we went all inclusive and there is a wide variety of drinks that you can choose from.
food was also very good there was so much to choose from that even the most picky eaters are bound to find something they like.
outside pool was freezing and certainly waked you up in the morning. entertainment was good although the shows dont last very long and when busy you have to wait a while at the small bar to get served.
try to avoid going at the same time the local schools have their holidays because they are very noisey at night so much so that i had to complain to reception as the door banging screaming and running up and down the corridors carries on until 3am!
the reception did seem to sort the problem though.
would stay there again.

Room Tip: best level to stay on is the level with the restaurant on.
