We chose this hotel for a big family holiday and it was a bad decision. We went half board and over half of the group(there were 9 of us) were ill with the food at the buffet and the drinks at the bar. It was until the last three night that we ventured out to eat and drink and it saved what would have been a horrific holiday.
Some of the staff are extremely unfriendly and unhelpful. We ended up upgrading to all inclusive(before we had tasted the food/drink) and all inclusive doesn't start until 10.30...my husband went running in at 10.22 asking for a bottle of water as my two year old daughter had an awful cough and she pointed at the clock...he then complained to the reception staff who refused to get involved! Terrible attitude!
Also the hotel pool was absolutely freezing, although it was being chilled, I couldn't put the kids in it and I came home with a chest infection for daring it!
Also for a family hotel the entertainment seemed to forget that as the kids entertainment only lasted from 8.30-9pm at night and then it was adult entertainment which was often to scary for the kids.
I couldn't recommend it and certainly wouldn't go back! :(

We stayed in the Santa Monica Hotel in Calella for the first time during UK half term at the end of May. It was a nice time to visit as all the European children are NOT on half term, so plenty of room in and around the pool etc without hundreds of kids screaming all the time. All the staff were really friendly and seemed genuinely interested in helping us with any questions etc. I emailed them beforehand to request a room on the 1st floor over looking the pool and to our surprise this is exactly what we got! so very happy with that. The room was clean and tidy, but a little outdated. Could have done with a couple more pillows and blankets for the beds (but as we didn't ask for any, we can't really complain). We only stayed B&B so breakfast was quite reasonable with the usual choice of continental breakfast choice. As the weather was not that good for our short stay (very cloudy and a massive storm with hail stones)!! we decided to eat in the hotel restaurant one night, which we were not really impressed with the dinner food. We are glad that we went B&B and not all inclusive as food outside the hotel in the old town restaurants was nice - and cheap!! The entertainment staff were great and put on some really good shows etc. there was even a reptile show where you get to hold and touch a very large python... Overall we had a great few days in this hotel and we were not disappointed in any of it really (apart from the weather) but that is nature. The beach is only a few minutes walk away and is clean and sandy, the pool area was nice too. On the last day we used the hotels safe, secure and CCTV monitored luggage room where you can also use toilets, shower and hairdryer - which again was a bonus for a budget hotel. All in all we would return to this hotel without a doubt as it suited us for a short budget break as a couple with a 7 year old child.

Room Tip: Definitely a first floor room overlooking the pool. Rooms at the side and back of the hotel are a bi...

This is the first time we have stayed at the Santa Monica hotel.location was perfect for us close to Barcelona, very close to the beach.staff were excellent. especially the restaurant staff,Bar,entertainments team, food were great apart from some of the dishes weren't labeled clearly what ingredient used, children loved the entertainments. every night something was on for everyone, staff all were friendly, very good value for money, the only thing i did not like was a free WiFi at reception .was keep going off ,had to go to receptionist to ask if they can re-start the WiFi,
but in general we was so pleased,i would love to come back again.and defiantly to the same hotel if we ever come back to the calella ,

ok, there are some really good things going for this hotel, and some that could need tweaking slightly.
I will start with the food, and offer some advice. PUT SOME THINGS ON THE MENU LIKE PIZZA, it will fly off the trays trust me, instead of fish broth, or whatever it was trying to be. also if your going to do pasta, great, how about adding some nice sauce to it instead of drenching it in oil, and I really really really do not want to sit next to someone else at the same table. That aside, it was ok.
TBH I lived in the snack bar, got addicted to ham and cheese toasties.
Another bit of advice, how about some mattresses on the sunbeds? I would even pay a euro, would be nice to have the option.
The room I thought was nice. IF YOU WANT A SEA VIEW, DO NOT ASK FOR FIRST FLOOR, ASK FOR 8TH FLOOR, POOL SIDE. I felt really sorry for people at the back overlooking a main road.
The main reason I have gave this a 4/5 is the staff, including bar staff, entertainment, and cleaners. Bar staff always had a smile, entertainment never stopped, not sure when they actually slept.
the night time, was relaxing, some great funny shows, and very strong drinks.

Room Tip: choose 8th floor for pool/sea view.

Hotel public areas very clean and tidy, although the toilets in the reception area could have been cleaner or larger bins needed to be provided. The reception and bar staff were friendly and helpful with good standard of English. Entertainment staff and outside acts were good, children's activities during the day were varied and all children were invited to participate.

Rooms were clean and spacious, but the one we were in was tired and in need of decoration, beds very firm.

Main restaurant catered more for the Spanish and Russian clients than the British. Our party consisted of 2 fussy eating children, who survived on the sandwiches, burgers and hotdogs from the snack bar and ice cream, and a vegetarian who was sick of cheese salads by the end of the week.

The hotel is situated a short walk from the beach and the edge of the main resort, although a significant number of hotels, bars, restaurants and shops were closed.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel have less traffic noise, but are above the pool and main entrance. L...

Dear MegsMum15
Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us at the popular Hotel Santa Monica.
At Med Playa we aim to offer our guests the very best holiday experience possible, and we are sorry that there were some aspects of your stay which did not meet with your expectations.
The Hotel Manager and his staff do their very best to offer varied international menus to suit the requirements of our guests, so it is disappointing to hear that the selection on offer was not suitable to your tastes.
We sincerely hope that in spite of some disappointment in the hotel, your overall holiday in Calella was enjoyable.
With kind regards
Sue

This is the second time we have stayed at the Santa Monica, the last time being in August 2012. It was a lot quieter this time with it not being peak season and it was mainly Spanish holiday makers staying there. This obviously meant that the entertainment and food was more geared for the Spanish but this didn't really bother us but I would think some people may not approve. As usual the bar staff were great and really friendly and Fernando (head of animation team) was lovely and tried to entertain everyone. We stayed all inclusive and could always find something to eat although, as I said, compared to our last stay the food was geared towards the Spanish. Rooms were lovely and clean and reception staff were very helpful. I would definitely stay again.
