“3th best hotel in Calella...Seriously??”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

I have no idea why everybody called this hotel "excellent, cleany, good price etc."
First impression - the old man at the reception, really unplesant and speaking english not very well...
Hereinafter referred to in points
- strange smell in the room every day
- minibar available only for money and the safe too (in 3* hotel???)
- really uncomfortable beds
- tiles on the floor in all room and corridors (it really makes a noise, especially at night)
- bathroom not really good-looking and not very clean
- no free wifi in public areas
- swimming pool area was nice but water in pool was very dirty and cold
- acces to the spa only for "gold members" (we paid 140 euros/room/night)
- large selection of food at the buffet but low quality
- drinks for a dinner are not included in the price (even water or soft drinks)
It was terrible and really expensive experience.
I do not really recommend this hotel!!

Room Tip: I do not really recommend this hotel !!!

Have spent lovely family vacation at this hotel in July 2014. Hotel has good location, all nececcary amenities. Advantages- helpful and pleasant staff ( especially reception), high quality of food ( closer to 4 stars than 3 stars), night shows. Disadvantages - there is no baby area.

Room Tip: choose priviliged room and book by web site. Rooms on 4,5,6,7 floor with a sea view have a real spe...

We had room in the fifth floor facing west. So after nice day on the pool area, we could sit in our balcony playing cards in the sun. Room was family room for 2+1, nothing special, clean, but not very spacious. Ia like that had to pay for the use of minibar 16€/week and it didn't get even get cold :/ Towels, both normal and pools ones, were changed regularly. Tv's are modern ones these days. Cleaners, like all staff in this hotel, are smiley and nice. Lot of Russian tourists and for them hotel has Russia speaking personnel in my he reception as well as in the pool bar. Many Spanish people nor Russians don't speak english. With castellano everything was clear and service good. It was nice that the town train for tourists stops near this hotel. Unfortunately their timetables are Spanish style; you can never be sure that train comes. Sometimes they ride even in siesta time, then one day didn't at normal hours. One way 1,50€, whole round 2,50€. Good if you don't like walking with your shopping's.

Room Tip: Higher floor facing west gets a lot of sun and sea view. Poolside rooms are in the dark in the after...

Room in General:
Stayed in the Kaktus Playa Hotel for 3 nights/4 days as half board. Myself and 4 other girls requested an interconnecting room, which we got! Beds were comfy and large, and room and bathroom cleaned. Rooms cleaned every day and fresh towels given. 1st day there even our underwear was folded which one of the girls found strange! The 2nd day, our rooms were cleaned but not to that extent! Found rooms to be noisy....can hear all from outside including kids running in flipflops indoors, to the bins outdoors (we were on the 1st floor with a pool view). There were no towel animals on the beds as seen in the pictures either!! :-P (That was the least of my worries though!)

Staff:
Staff were good, but not excellent. Thought they could have been better. It was nearly hassle or putting them out if you asked Receptionist a question, but at same time they did answer. Waiting staff again could improve. Had to have food card swiped and lots of bustle if a few people coming to eat at once. Waiter/waitress showed us to table on all occasions but slow to check on you. Ate an eve meal there once and took few mins for our drinks to arrive. Had cocktails in the bar and the staff on the bar were the best. Good sense of humour in comparison to reception/restaurant.

Food:
We paid for half board so our breakfasts and eve meals were covered. On the eve we arrived in Hotel, we decided to eat there. Good options for my vegetarian friend. Loads of tapas style food for the rest of us. On check in, we were given 'meal cards' which they swiped. Minerals like coke were €2 and water was €1.50....beware as they automatically give you sparking water so be sure to ask for water 'without gas!' Good selection for breakfast also. They have a coffee/tea machine, but if you want a proper 'pot' of tea this was €1.50 extra. Again, orange juice and pineapple juice on tap (tasted slightly watered down) but proper orange juice could be bought at approx €2. Food was good, but again, not excellent.

Facilites:
Wifi in rooms were not free as advertised when we booked. Can't remember exact prices but think €3 for 2 hours? They have an outdoor jacuzzi and swimming pool. Swimming pool was freezing so didn't go into it but it looked clean. Other girls tried the jacuzzi and liked it! They also had an indoor pool and jacuzzi which we did not use, that was an additional €10 per day. Myself and one of the girls booked treatments (massages/facials/etc), which started from approx €35. They have to be booked through reception, Julie, who did it, was nice. Hotel has both a lift and a stairs. Main bathrooms in Hotel clean. Bar looks to be very modern and bright. Very close to centre of Calella, with loads of lovely shops and restaurants. Also within 5 minutes of the beach.

Area/weather:
We travelled last weekend which was the beginning of October, so the area in general was quieter. Weather was nice - it was warm but not hot. No harm to pack a cardigan! On the beach, there was a big tent erected for the October Fest which was great fun! Great atmosphere and acts/beer from Germany with good crowds. A lot of the pubs/restaurants were already closed seen as the end of the season, and remaining premises said they were closing in next few weeks, so bear that in mind if travelling now or later in October. Beach is near hotel, but I was disappointed with it...it was more grainey than sandy....was nearly uncomfortable to walk on. There are a number of bars on the beach along with sun loungers.

All in all, would ultimately recommend this hotel again and the area. Would probably prefer to eat out during the day/night though but breakfast was okay to get you started for day.

Stayed here in May 2013 and was really pleased. The pool area is one of the nicest i have been to! Staff were friendly but didn't speak much English. The rooms were clean. Location is not far from the beach.

stayed here 4 weeks ago and cannot fault the place and the amenities at all, very polite staff exceptionally clean and the breakfast is amazing, huge choice of food both english and international. The pool is lovely and has a hot tub. and the location is great for the beach ( which is also superb, just be careful as its a sharp incline as soon as you enter the sea!) The rooms are quite modern too , i would liken them to a good premier inn. The only thing i would say is if your looking for somewhere with the normal english entertainment its not for you, a lot of older spanish and german/ dutch people were staying here so its more geared up for them, also nothing goes on during yhe day for kids etc. Is more a place to go for peace and quiet to be honest. Calella isnt up to much either really, ok if you like shopping but thats about it, its very small and not very much choice in restaurants. You can get to malgrat very easily by train (this runs along the beach) its a bit more lively there. And I would definitely reccomend going to Tossa de Mar on the boat trip, its very pretty there with lovely little shops and spanish buildings and a castle . it stops off at lloret too which is extremely lively , great for the teens and younger holidaymakers. If you have time go to Barcelona by train, we ran out of time but will be going there later in the year.

Room Tip: ask for a sea view!
