“It got better and better”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

We've just returned from the Centurion Playa following a weeks stay. If I'd written this review half way through the holiday then it wouldn't have been that good. Check in wasn't very smooth as the receptionist kept having to fend off other guests to whom the concept of queuing appeared alien.

We were travelling with Thomson and the only rooms available on their website were standard rooms with pool or partial pool views. I wanted to book a larger room or suite but this wasn't possible so We booked a pool view room, paying extra. Our room which was on the second floor, was beautifully decorated in calming shades of grey and cream. The bed was a king size instead of two singles pushed together however the room itself was definitely a bit on the small side. The bathroom was well equipped, no bath though and there was a fridge and kettle in the room.

As we have stressful jobs our ideal holiday is one where we can get a bit of peace and quiet and it became obvious early on that this wasn't going to be possible. During the day the pool area is very noisy. Previous reviewers have mentioned that the walls are thin and this is definitely the case. One night I could hear the person next door brushing their teeth! Nightly entertainment is held by the pool and this is really loud given the size of the hotel and number of guests. Although it finished at midnight some nights the noise of guests by the pool and the band packing up went on until 1am so no early nights for us!

We felt that the pool area allocated to sunbathing was too small. Sunbeds in the popular areas were reserved by 8am and the rest of the beds were too close together with no room for manoeuvre. After a few hours I started to feel like a sardine in a tin and I was gaining intimate knowledge of my neighbour every time they bent over!

After a few days however we stated to relax and enjoy elements of the hotel such as the food which was the best we've had in a buffet style restaurant. All the food was freshly cooked and beautifully presented. My favourite were the pizzas. There were none of the tepid, tasteless stews/curries/casseroles that you get when Spanish hotels try to cater for British guests. We solved the sun bed problem by biting the bullet and paying to use the sunbeds on the beautiful beach which is just across the road.

We did have a bit of an issue with the location to start with. I'm sure that I'd read that the hotel was a 30 minute walk to Salou but this was definitely not the case. The walk to Cambrils (which is lovely) was ok but to the middle of Salou was a lot further so we used the excellent bus service which meant that we could use the hotel as a base.

We were informed that only a fifth of the guests were British and we could see that the hotel catered for affluent Spanish and Russian guests. It is definitely a case of 'He who pays the piper calls the tune' which would explain the lack of English TV channels and possibly the non availibity of better rooms for Thomson guests.

A mention must be made also of the staff who were all great, especially when I had a little mishap on the first night, special mention to the lifeguard, but they were all very helpful and cheerful.

Overall we enjoyed. Thinking back any issues we did have were I think due to the lack of or ambiguous information in the Thomson brochure so I shall remember this when booking holidays in the future

This is a lovely hotel just across the promenade from the beautiful beach. The hotel itself and the pool area are well maintained and kept in immaculate condition.

Realistically the walk into Cambrils takes up to 30 minutes at a leisurely pace. Alternatives are to hire a bike from the hotel or take the bus from stop just outside hotel - cheap and frequent service.

The loungers are the most comfortable I've experienced in hotels in years, really good back support when sitting up.

Breakfast and dinner are self-service. The usual range of hot and cold dishes for breakfast and a good selection in the evening. Not quite gourmet food but an adequate variety of good quality food with show cooking of fish and meat or poultry every day. Plentiful salads and fruit and all dishes are regularly replenished.

Standard bedroom adequate in size for 2 given that you will spend very little time there. Good sized bathroom with excellent shower and shelving. Very efficient AC

Bar and snack prices very reasonable.

Other reviewers have mentioned the staff at the Estival Centurion and indeed I would commend them. They were friendly, efficient and could not have been more helpful , especially in an emergency situation - and I had two of these.

Firstly, as a result of sunstroke (temperatures up to 35), I fainted, hit my forehead and got a nasty gash. I was able to get the attention of some nearby cleaning ladies. Within minutes the deputy manager, Toni, was up with her medical kit. She quickly arranged a wheelchair and taxi and accompanied my husband and I to the local hospital. She stayed with us until I was admitted and would not let us reimburse her for the taxi fare. (The hospital was modern and the attention and treatment was first class).

On our last day the coach driver stopped for about 3 minutes at the hotel (we saw him arriving) but he had driven off by the time we got out the door. David at reception immediately phoned Thomson's office with the result that a car was sent for us about 20 minutes later.

There is live music with dancing most nights, not very exciting but adds a little atmosphere. Music stops before midnight, as does the noisier music from hotel across the road.

The Estival is in a lovely scenic and quiet location and yet with easy access to Cambrils and Salou and places further afield.

We loved the area and the hotel and hope to return.

this hotel has a very good location opposite the main beach! however it is a very average hotel and NOT the "Platinum" hotel Thomson holidays claim it is! The rooms are small and all of the Thomson "standard rooms" overlook the road and are noisy, which we had! we could never leave our balcony door open, even at night for the noise! There are not enough sunbeds for this hotel around the pool either and as a consequence of being near the public beach, the general public came in to use the pool and the beds! I explained to the management of the hotel that this was happening and they didn't believe me, just brushed it off, but I saw people coming off the beach who weren't staying in the hotel and using the facilities I had paid a lot of money to use and couldn't! the bar area is also used as a public bar and some nights we had to fight to get a table for the entertainment as they were all taken up by the general public whom this hotel obviously make a lot of money out of! and didn't care about the residents of the hotel not getting a table! the food was ok! quite repetitive and some nights struggled to find "hot" food! we actually went in to nearby Cambrils to eat twice in the week we were there to get some decent food! there is absolutely nothing to do around the hotel,, which is great if you just want to stay in the hotel, but you will have to walk about 20mins-30mins either way to find any other restaurants, shops etc! the maid service was shabby, having to ask for more soap and toilet rolls on more than one occasion! I would not go back to this hotel!

Room Tip: if you want a good room pay the extra for "sea view" it is a lovely spot! which I would ha...

As a disabled pensioner this hotel was totally unsuitable for my husband and I as the majority of the guests were families with young children. This was surprising in June outwith school holidays. The dining room reminded me a school canteen with all the noise and the children running about.
There was no British television - just a couple of foreign news channels in English.
The worst bit was the unhelpfulness of Thomsons. We had specifically asked for a room with a pool view and was told when booking in March that this could only be requested - not firmly booked. Needless to say our room faced a busy road with cars, buses, lorries all day and night. We asked our rep Aaron for help and we then did not see him for a week!!
On a plus note Plana buses were great as the hotel was so far from the town- not a suitable for a disabled person
Very disappointed with Thomsons as we could have been offered a hotel that was mush more suited to our needs.

Room Tip: Make sure that when you are booking your room that the room you want can be firmly booked.

We stayed here a week in June and were allocated a very nice suite on floor 3 with a decent view over the pool area and beach. Check in was faultless and very friendly, a pointer to the professional staff which we met everywhere during our stay. They work very hard and despite some surly guests they all maintained a professionalism that other hotels could learn from. Kudos all round, they really make a difference.
Local transport on the bus service was easy, with stops in both directions right outside the property and a ticket office close by to get the T10 card (10 journeys anywhere in the Tarragona transport system, whether to Salou, Cambrils, Reus, Tarragona itself, etc., all classified as 1 journey). This card can be used for multiple people and can be topped up after all journeys are used. Simples.
We were half board, and the buffet was fine for our needs, but we like to eat out too so we sampled a few of the restaurants in Cambrils which were great value. I liked the relatively low prices too at the bars in the hotel, and the snack bar at the pool was good too.
Our room was very comfortable and spacious, but heard others say that the standard rooms were a bit cramped. Worth paying extra for a suite, if you can get one.
Room safe and internet were charged as extras.
All in all a great package. Well done.

This hotel has been the best hotel i have been to so far. It is clean, looks amazing, has great clean rooms, good service, great location and has an all you can eat buffet for all meals. With the food being great as well as plentiful and never running out. The Hotel has entertainment every night around the pool with the beach (Which is not as busy as the rest of the strip) 5 seconds away from the hotel.

Only improvement i could ask for is the staff being more knowledgeable on entertainment for the night!

There is also a gym and spa which is included in the price. There seems to be loads of family things to keep the kids amused.

The location is also great with a bus and the place to arrange excursions and buy tickets right outside the hotel! Its in the middle of two great areas.

I would also recommend getting the t-10 card for travel at the busplana across the road.

Room Tip: "Partial Sea View" is due to the rooms being angled, most rooms seem the same otherwise.

Just got back from 2 weeks at this hotel and things couldn't be better. We travelled with Thompson and was impressed with the arrangements. As a disabled, wheelchair user we booked an adapted room with sea view, and were surprised when we got one. Only glitch was at Gatwick when some idiot decided to have a smoke in the loo and set off the smoke alarms and everyone had to be evacuated, but we got there OK. On arrival at the hotel the reception staff were great, very friendly, cheerful, helpful 10/10. The lifts were plenty big enough for the wheelchair. We had problems elsewhere with small lifts. The room was very spacious and even had plenty of room after the wheelchair was parked up. They supplied me with a shower stool and adapter for my CPAP machine. The food was excellent with plenty of choice daily and the staff were very friendly and helpful, and no problems at all with the wheelchair.
The location couldn't have been better, about half way between Cambril and Salou and not many shops for the wife to spend money in lol, great.
Good pool, good access to beach, good everything.
Thank you to all the staff at the hotel for helping us have an excellent holiday, and thank you to Thompsons for the overall package.
