We've just returned from the Centurion Playa following a weeks stay. If I'd written this review half way through the holiday then it wouldn't have been that good. Check in wasn't very smooth as the receptionist kept having to fend off other guests to whom the concept of queuing appeared alien.
We were travelling with Thomson and the only rooms available on their website were standard rooms with pool or partial pool views. I wanted to book a larger room or suite but this wasn't possible so We booked a pool view room, paying extra. Our room which was on the second floor, was beautifully decorated in calming shades of grey and cream. The bed was a king size instead of two singles pushed together however the room itself was definitely a bit on the small side. The bathroom was well equipped, no bath though and there was a fridge and kettle in the room.
As we have stressful jobs our ideal holiday is one where we can get a bit of peace and quiet and it became obvious early on that this wasn't going to be possible. During the day the pool area is very noisy. Previous reviewers have mentioned that the walls are thin and this is definitely the case. One night I could hear the person next door brushing their teeth! Nightly entertainment is held by the pool and this is really loud given the size of the hotel and number of guests. Although it finished at midnight some nights the noise of guests by the pool and the band packing up went on until 1am so no early nights for us!
We felt that the pool area allocated to sunbathing was too small. Sunbeds in the popular areas were reserved by 8am and the rest of the beds were too close together with no room for manoeuvre. After a few hours I started to feel like a sardine in a tin and I was gaining intimate knowledge of my neighbour every time they bent over!
After a few days however we stated to relax and enjoy elements of the hotel such as the food which was the best we've had in a buffet style restaurant. All the food was freshly cooked and beautifully presented. My favourite were the pizzas. There were none of the tepid, tasteless stews/curries/casseroles that you get when Spanish hotels try to cater for British guests. We solved the sun bed problem by biting the bullet and paying to use the sunbeds on the beautiful beach which is just across the road.
We did have a bit of an issue with the location to start with. I'm sure that I'd read that the hotel was a 30 minute walk to Salou but this was definitely not the case. The walk to Cambrils (which is lovely) was ok but to the middle of Salou was a lot further so we used the excellent bus service which meant that we could use the hotel as a base.
We were informed that only a fifth of the guests were British and we could see that the hotel catered for affluent Spanish and Russian guests. It is definitely a case of 'He who pays the piper calls the tune' which would explain the lack of English TV channels and possibly the non availibity of better rooms for Thomson guests.
A mention must be made also of the staff who were all great, especially when I had a little mishap on the first night, special mention to the lifeguard, but they were all very helpful and cheerful.
Overall we enjoyed. Thinking back any issues we did have were I think due to the lack of or ambiguous information in the Thomson brochure so I shall remember this when booking holidays in the future
