We spent five nights in this hotel with the aim of seeing a little of Switzerland and doing a lot of relaxing in the middle of a long trip. We chose a room with a lake view and were very glad we did as it had a reasonably spacious balcony where we could sit and relax. This made a big difference to our stay.
Our room was large and comfortable, with an excellent bed. The staff were very friendly and helpful, especially at reception. The grounds are lovely and it is just a five minute walk to the lake. There is a good indoor heated pool as well as fitness facilities and spa.
The location was excellent, within easy driving or train distance (but watch the cost of the train fares!) of Bern, Thun and many other smaller towns. You can catch a boat to Interlaken or Thun as well.
I find everything in Switzerland expensive but this hotel is top-end expensive. For what we paid I found there were a number of small problems that really ought not to have occurred:
The maid service was erratic - although the room was made up promptly they forgot to replace toiletries on several occasions.
The fridge in the room was barely functional
The wifi dropped out in our room constantly
The hotel supplies only doonas and they are far too hot in summer; although you can open the window a crack, you really need to sleep with the balcony door wide open to get any ventilation
There seems to be some difficulty in managing both events and in-house guests. The hotel has a large conference centre and when a group is in, the staff simply cannot cope with the rush at breakfast time, with the platters on the buffet breakfast left near empty.
Another group, a wedding party, woke us at 12.30pm with some sort of ceremony culminating in fireworks on the lawn below the hotel bedrooms. Noise from the same group on an outside balcony woke us at 1.30am and again at 3am, when I rang the night porter and asked if they could go inside.
While I agree with a lot of what other reviewers have said about the lovely ambience of this place, and the opportunities to unwind, I do think they could do better considering the very high cost of the accommodation. An excellent hotel provides more than lovely views and well-equipped rooms. It also provides highly efficient management, a balanced approach to the needs of in-house guests and events, and excellent attention to detail. The hotel could benefit from sending someone senior to experience the level of service and comfort in a hotel such as one of the Mandarin Oriental chain in Singapore or Macau.
