We started out in Lauterbrunnen in the morning, heading to Berne, Lausanne then Martigny. When we got to Martigny we looked for the platform and schedule which we found and were very confused by. It looked like the Mont Blanc train which we had read so much about was actually a train to Vallorcine then a full hour wait until a bus to Chamonix. We were disappointed but waited an hour for the next train and got on it, we have eurail passes so the whole trip from Switzerland to France was free! We were so blown away by the Mont Blanc train!! It was scary and breathtaking and beautiful I just wish it went the whole way! We got off at Vallorcine and waited the hour for the bus, got on excited to arrive in Chamonix soon and found that it only drove one stop to Argentière and everyone got off. We had no idea what was going on and there was no indication this would happen on the pamphlet we had received nor anyone we spoke to along the way working for the railway! We waited another 30 minutes for another train to Chamonix which took another 30 minutes on the train. All together the hour of travel took 4 hours. We had left the accommodation in Lauterbrunnen at 6.30am and arrived at the accommodation in Chamonix at 6pm that night.. I just am disappointed at the lack of information for the traveller, the part of track under construction has been out of use for over 3 years! It was fun but I wish we had of known this before we left in the morning.

French side rail works that have been going on for some time makes this a long journey interrupted by bus journeys. Check to see if work is complete. Get to Chamonix early if you want to go up to Mont Blanc

This was a really cool way of getting from Chamonix in France to Martigny in Switzerland. Instead of going to Geneva, I hopped on the bus from Chamonix Mont Blanc station (at present there is a bus that takes you from Chamonix to Vallorcine to reconnect with the train). It is incredibly cheap for the wonderful little trip it provides. It was under £15 to get all the way to Martigny in Switzerland if you pay full price. I had an interrail pass for Switzerland so the trip from Chamonix to Martigny cost all of 10.30 euros for me (one-way). A bargain. It was a stunning ride on a single track. Amazing engineering and you are so close to the rock faces etc some of the time. Absolutely brilliant. If you just wanted a day trip you could go there and back and have lunch in Martigny and return either to Chamonix or to St Gervais Fayet which also has some interesting things to do (hot mineral baths). In Martigny there is a very good creperie just a short walk down the road opposite the station.

We chose to take the Mont-Blanc Express to Chamonix from Martigny rather than drive but had we known that it stopped at Le Chatelard & we were all shuffled off onto a bus, we would have driven. There were no staff at Le Chatelard to assist with when & which bus we were to take, confusion rained.
The half trip though was very scenic & best to sit on the left hand side to Chamonix & the right hand side coming back.
A one off experience & an expensive one.

OK, up to Chamonix, sit on the left, down back to Martigny, grab a right seat. Note that at present, there is a bus service from Le Chatelard to Chamonix. This should stop by December 2012
