Edam is a small village, located about 40 minutes north to Amsterdam, is offering a lovely cheese market reproduction on Wednesdays from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. The village center is then filled up with Edam cheese packages and Villagers in traditional Dutch clothes - very colorful scene, especially on a sunny day, as the place itself is lovely. The event itself is free and interactive - with traditional merchants negotiating the cheese deals, allowing tourists to actually imagine how such bargains were taking place hundred years ago. It is possible to take pictures together with these welcoming people and of course to buy the products. The alleys around are holding at this time also vegetables market and cozy restaurants that guarantee a delightful morning.
There is a parking located few minutes of walk from the village center - easily accessible also for strollers.
As a side note, around Edam it is also possible to visit some nearby cheese factories. In these places one can usually also learn about the way Holland wooden shoes are made, and even try it yourself. One example which we visited is called simonehoeve.
