On arrival at Newport we were quite disappointed with the town itself, and were really struggling to find somewhere open for lunch that wasn't fried foods / jacket potatoes / paninis.

We came across Tuscal Hills by accident and it was a very happy one! The restaurant wasn't busy, just one other couple dining at the same time. But the service was quick and non intrusive, the food itself delicious, and the entire meal was such a good value price.

We ordered the onion soup to start, which was almost more like a stew with the chunks of onion, the cheese and croutons. Really tasty. My husband had the melon and parma ham which he really enjoyed.

For mains my husband had the rare steak strips, and I had the aubergine bake - both were really good. The bake was just £8.90 and also came with a complimentary side or salad. I ordered the greek salad which was a great size - really went well with the bake.

For dessert we had tiramisu (amazing, home made) and strawberry cheesecake.

The whole meal, with a large glass of wine and a can of soft drink, came to just £40. And we also received a jug of tap water with lemon at the start of the meal.

Would definitely recommend for lunch or evening meal - a definite gem in Newport!

Second visit here, Friday lunchtime with friends and again plenty of space.

The food is delightful - authentic Tuscan dishes, thoughtfully presented. Covers for about 30 diners, light and minimal decor.

Good range of main courses with many at the £7 mark, plenty of starters and half a dozen desserts at £3.50/£4. Wine by the bottle is well-priced.

I cannot understand why there are so few patrons, although the street presence is poor. (You would have to know there is a little restaurant/bistro up the step and through the door).

I'm fearful, as word seems slow to circulate that this is the ideal place for a lunchtime meal, that it will close due to lack of support. Don't delay and GO NOW!

Tuscan hills is Newports home of traditional, Tuscan style Italian cooking.

The food was genuinely some of the best I have had the privilege of tasting. A small simple menu ensured that everything was served quickly and cooked to perfection.

The £10 set menu (selected starter, any pasta dish, any desert) represented fantastic value, but even without, it would not be difficult to eat a full 3 course meal for around £15-20 per head.

Staff were friendly and efficient, and always helpful, even when we changed our mind.

Like many, I found the ambience of the restaurant a little lacking. Everything was clean and smart, but very monotone, and lacking a feature. The 1950's and 60's music too felt a little out of place.

My biggest concern was that though a small place, it was nearly empty on a busy Wednesday night. There were only 3 couples dining while we were there.

It would be a real shame if a place like this couldn't survive, so please give it a go.

Four of us visited this restaurant for the first time on a Saturday night - our table was booked for 8.30pm. On arrival there wasn't any staff to greet us and when we found the waitress she pointed us to our table. Service was acceptable up until our main course (at this point the waitress and what looked to be the chef had finished their shift), when a gentleman dressed in a suit, possibly the owner, cleared three of our plates whilst one of us was still eating. We sat for about 20 minutes and were not offered a dessert/coffee menu, we did eventually ask for one but decided not to order as we felt it might have been too much trouble for the gentleman.

The prices are reasonable and food delicious (one of us had the 'penne with lamb' which could have done with more sauce) but in agreement with the previous reviews, the room definitely could do with some colour and the tables could do with at least having salt and pepper on them!

I would visit this restaurant again purely on the basis of the quality and tastiness of the food, but not the service.

Whilst visiting the island, thought we would try one of the new eateries in Newport. Menu is very extensive and the food was delicious. But the restaurant lacks a few finishing touches, firstly some colour or artwork would make the welcoming more appealing, it felt soulless! Service started well, drinks etc, but then went downhill after that, for Italian food, no black pepper or Parmesan offered and then clearing plates before everyone has finished, is not good service! We then waited 45 mins and then had to ask for dessert and coffee menu? At that point we decided to head elsewhere!
All in all the restaurant has the most important ingredient spot on as the food was delicious, but some tidying up on service, will make it a very popular place!
