“Just OK”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 September 2012

After ordering the tuscan soup we were told it "went wrong" so was no longer available. Disappointed to receive tinned stawberries for dessert in August especially when they proclaim to use "fresh local produce". Pleasant staff, nice location, pleasant restaurant, shame about some of the food.

“Potentially excellent”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2012

We were looking for somewhere to eat Friday night and had planned to trek into Newport to eat at a Chinese Restaurant, but on parking (outside the restaurant) saw Tuscan Hills, so decided as it seems quite new, to try there

The food was very good, and the puddings, Cheesecake with walnuts and honey, Tiramisu were excellent – Deliciously fragrant and appealing in looks and taste.

On the down side, the waiting time for what amounts to as “pasta” was long. We waited about 45 mins and had almost demolished our bottle of wine and patience with the wait.

Perhaps what could be done to improve is a bread board or some bread and olive oil to maintain client’s interest?

The salad was mediocre, and I was offered either oil or basmati vinegar and needed to ask for both.

However all said and done the cost was good – well balanced and fair. We would certainly go again – we thought the waitress was lovely (if rather overworked) and very helpful. The chef we think we saw briefly – both seem young and keen and we wish them well.

Oh and as a "flower" fanatic, I would suggest fresh water in the vases each night, takes five minutes but one has time to notice these things. Best wishes and good luck

“Disappointing”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 August 2012

We went for an early evening meal, upon arrival the waitress was still dressing tables, and there was no music.

When waiting for our meal we overheard arguing to the extent of the chef telling the waitress to turn away any further customers, to which she replied she would not do this and the chef could do it himself.

Our food arrived very quickly, and was a very small portion and was not by any means amazing.

We requested a refund which we received, and the chef explained he was ill and didnt wish to serve anyone else. We felt awkward, rushed and left with hungry stomachs!

WILL NOT be returning to this restaurant ever again, will do not go out very often and were both very disappointed... :-(

“local gem - cheap but good quality”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 July 2012

This was a great find. Just down from our hotel. We were a bit skeptical as it was almost empty at 8pm on a Saturday night -- yet the food was delicious. It was high quality, and really inexpensive (£3 for a dessert would be unheard of in London). We had the chicken with ginger and roasted potatoes; steak & chips; and spicy sausage pasta. All plates were wiped clean.
One cricitism: the winelist is very limited - literally two reds, one white and one rose.

“A real gem in the middle of Newport”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 June 2012

On arrival at Newport we were quite disappointed with the town itself, and were really struggling to find somewhere open for lunch that wasn't fried foods / jacket potatoes / paninis.

We came across Tuscal Hills by accident and it was a very happy one! The restaurant wasn't busy, just one other couple dining at the same time. But the service was quick and non intrusive, the food itself delicious, and the entire meal was such a good value price.

We ordered the onion soup to start, which was almost more like a stew with the chunks of onion, the cheese and croutons. Really tasty. My husband had the melon and parma ham which he really enjoyed.

For mains my husband had the rare steak strips, and I had the aubergine bake - both were really good. The bake was just £8.90 and also came with a complimentary side or salad. I ordered the greek salad which was a great size - really went well with the bake.

For dessert we had tiramisu (amazing, home made) and strawberry cheesecake.

The whole meal, with a large glass of wine and a can of soft drink, came to just £40. And we also received a jug of tap water with lemon at the start of the meal.

Would definitely recommend for lunch or evening meal - a definite gem in Newport!
