“Wonderful place to walk & maybe see a Red Squirrel”

This is a wonderful place for a good long walk. I go there time & time again & never get fed up with visiting. It can be quiet peaceful. There are different routes you can walk but they all lead back to the free car park. There is a hide where you can sit & wait to see if your lucky enough to see our native Red Squirrel. I managed to see 2 different ones. But they were so quick I couldn't get a photo. Well worth visiting as it is a wonderful place you can forget all your troubles & enjoy the surroundings.

Brodie (2 year old retriever) loved the freedom, the smells and the new friends he made. He also loved the muddy water in the ditches at the side of the path. Lots of different routes to choose from and people were very friendly. There's a children's activity area in the middle and we saw some intrepid 11 year olds about the climb high up a tree.

Parkhurst Forest has some lovely old oak trees, a proper forest. Giant wind turbines would be an absolute travesty.

Maps placed strategically would be really helpful, as with my navigation skills we could easily have got lost and parking wasn't easy.

I found Parkhurst Forest clean, tidy and presentable. Even with all the recent rain the paths were dry and bog free.

Like the New Forest just across the Solent, this was a royal hunting forest in medieval times. The main entrance is off Forest Road, north-west of Newport, the main road from St Mary's Hospital roundabout to Yarmouth.. Turn off the road and follow a driveway, bearing left into the car park. Here there are picnic tables. The Red Squirrel Walk is a short circular paved walk suitable for families with young children. There are sculptures and information boards leading to a hide where you can watch wildlife. Another way-marked walk takes you on a longer, circular walk, following unpaved forest tracks.

Parkhurst Forest is popular for a variety of leisure activities: walking, dog walking, cycling, horse riding and wildlife observation. Horse riders and organised groups using the forest must apply for a permit. Meadows in the centre of the forest are used for educational purposes.

During the second half of the twentieth century the Forestry Commission grew plantations of commercial timber in the forest. Now it has plans to remove non-native trees and restore the forest to its original landscape of wood pasture and open heath and grassland. This will attract a greater variety of wildlife. Red squirrels and dormice need hazel coppice and squirrels need pine cones.

I enjoy fungus forays and wildlife walks in the forest. Away from the main entrance the forest becomes more peaceful. The wide variety of trees brings a wider variety of fungi. There are also wild flowers beside the tracks, a great variety of birds and sometimes butterflies.

Near the various entrances to the forest there is a problem with dogs' faeces on the paths, but there are dog bins. The forest tracks can get muddy and waterlogged, so walking boots are a good idea. Some people complain that signage in the forest is not good and they get lost. So follow the way-marked circular routes if you don't know the forest.

There are no toilet facilities or refreshments provided in the forest.
