This is a real buzzy obviously visited by locals that enjoy a nice atmosphere while enjoying a coffee and/or lunch... I believe they also do evenings too with entertainment. Def worth a visit if in Newport

“A lovely place to while away an afternoon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 March 2013

This lovely art centre is housed in a converted bonded warehouse with the river Medina running beneath the building. There are three gallery rooms, one of which seems to be dedicated to children's art, the other two galleries are frequently changing, but always have something interesting to view.

Within this centre is the Minghella Theatre, which hosts some interesting and quirky productions. There is an extensive (and inexpensive) cafe which serves lovely, local and fresh food, just the place for a light lunch. Also a shop featuring jewellery, pottery, glass, and other goods by local artists. They run all sorts of workshops, from budding thespians to inventive jewellers.

“Lively and versatile”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 March 2013

Situated on the quayside at the heart of Newport, a bustling market town, this is the Island's principal arts centre. It is housed in attractive old warehouses and consists of one large and two small galleries. a theatre, seminar room, meeting room, cafe, shop and toilets.

You enter through the shop which displays and sells beautiful and imaginative Island crafts. Open the door at the far end and you hear rushing water. You find yourself on a bridge over a stream that pours down into the tidal River Medina. You enter another building where a cafe occupies most of the ground floor. Here there's an art exhibition on the walls and pillars.

Upstairs there's the main, Michael West Gallery, and the smaller Learning Curve Gallery for school and youth displays. The main exhibitions are adventurous and varied. Some inspire me more than others, but they open my mind to new perspectives. There's a lift beside the stairs for disabled access to the galleries and theatre.

The newest gallery is downstairs, through the cafe to the far corner and out onto the terrace overlooking the river. This gallery is housed in the Rope Store, a most attractive old building that was crumbling and was saved from demolition, Through its windows you can watch swans and ducks on the water, waiting for someone to throw them food from the quayside.

Entrance to the Arts Centre is free of charge and many people just come to eat and drink at the cafe. The cafe terrace overlooking the river is a delightful place to sit in fine weather (see separate cafe reviews). Live music is held in the cafe, there's a comedy club and a variety of plays, poetry recitals and other events are held in the theatre.

Quay Arts holds art and craft workshops for all ages and special programmes for children and their parents during school holidays. It has artists' studios along the Quay at another converted warehouse called the Jubilee Stores and it also holds workshops at the Depozitory in central Ryde.

I often drop into the Quay Arts Centre when I am shopping in Newport because it is such an attractive place and I always find something interesting there. Highly recommended.
