“The Big Fish tackles The Stag”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 April 2014

We were fortunate to finish a meal just before a rather large party took to their seats. I think this was a one off with cutlery and all that, but we were glad to have finished already.
The staff were exceptional and attentive without being intrusive.
Drinks were delivered as we savoured the menu and specials clearly marked on the board. The staff could advise on things and one even went to clarify things with the chef.
I've never seen my wife finish an entire plate of food before, and was wowing about all aspects of her dish, with some lamb-cutlets taking centre-stage. She had requested that the outside fat to be crisped-off and the chef duly obliged.
I had the beef and horseradish pie, and I was clearly struggling towards the end, but it was an absolute delight.
It's just a damn shame that it's stuck on an island, and the prospect of us popping out for a nice meal there is rather remote, as we live in South Manchester - about 6 hours away.
Nevertheless it is unsurpassed in pub food, and the menus simply tell you what's going to be on your plate, rather than some self-indulgent pretentious waffle.

Well done to all, and put it on your list and just pray that the party we thankfully had missed hasn't made a booking.
Extremely good value for money, as I've paid more and settled for a lot less. If their prices increase just because it's good it might not work. The current business model will no doubt ensure that the Stag will thrive, and one day The Big Fish may hopefully return

“Good Chef”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 March 2014

The food was excellent and served quickly by good knowledeable staff. I regretted the fact that I had a food deal with the hotel reservatrion as the varied Specials on the board looked really mouthwatering!! They have a chef there that they should hang onto!! Two good cask ales in the bar.

“High quality pub food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 March 2014

The offer was a 2 for 1 , 3 course meal at a very impressive £19.99. We didn't have great expectations at that price but we were stunned by the quality and service. The slow cooked pork starter was superb, - moist, tender meat nicely presented with an apple and ale chutney and crostinis. My main was fillet of hake on a bed of fennel and pea risotto. very good indeed. The other main enjoyed was pan fried lambs liver and bacon, caramelised onion sauce and whole grain mustard mash. Desserts of rich chocolate mousse and a pavlova were a delight. there was even a bottle of wine as part of the offer for just £10. Quite good too. Altogether a.terriffic meal at an amazing price. Will be back soon!

“Now getting its act together”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 January 2014 via mobile

The food is very good, not as big a selection as others in the group but sufficient. It needs to hold this standard, as on previous visits it has not been as good.
