I've stayed in hotels for almost 50 years and this has got to be the worst ever. We arrived mid-afternoon to find the door locked and no one answering the bell. We phoned them from the front door step only to be told that the manager was out and would be with us in 5 minutes as he'd had to go out. Definitely not a good first impression, but indicative of what was to come.
The room we were given was the absolute pits and there were no other rooms available. It was very neglected and dirty with bad stains on the carpet on both sides of the bed. There was no wardrobe but a small rail with a few coat-hangers in the corner behind the TV. The room was so small that every time you walked around the bed you either banged your head on the TV or else knocked off some of the clothes hung up there. The only drawer was a very small one in a bedside table, not even big enough for a newspaper. The only real shelf was thick with dust so we had to use the small radiator shelf. The 6 lamp chandelier had only one working bulb and the bedside lamp didn't work at all. Both bath and wash-basin had filthy sealant around them; the bath plug was so tight that it couldn't be removed after use and the basin plug so loose that it didn't keep the water in. The hot water was scalding hot and other guests complained of no hot water at all. The cold water was always warm and therefore undrinkable. There was a hair-dryer on the bathroom wall which probably isn't allowed under health and safety, but it didn't work anyway. The noise of the nearby traffic meant that we had to keep the windows closed on a scorching hot weekend. The walls were so thin that we were kept awake into the early hours by noisy fellow-guests. In any case there was a glass section on one wall through which the landing light shone all night, so that too made it difficult to sleep. There was no cooked breakfast available and the continental breakfast was rather pathetic. The toast was made from bread which was partly soggy and partly rock hard and had obviously been frozen. They had run out of croissants, yoghurts and marmalade.
The only good thing that could be said about this abysmal establishment was that the staff, though few in number, were very friendly.
