I have mixed feelings regarding my visit to the pub a week ago - on the one hand, I was underwhelmed by the service and the staff, however, with a few tweaks this place could be really great - However, worth a visit to see their beautiful function room downstairs!
My food was delicious, but they should take more care to present the food nicely. Small details were also lacking with the service; e.g. our cutlery and napkins were just dumped on the table, rather than being set out. In addition, the staff seemed inexperienced and not overly welcoming, which is always disappointing. Wine enthusiasts may find the wine list to be quite limited. My visit took place on a wet and windy day in May, but I have the impression that this pub would be lovely in the summer, when you can have evening drinks on the raised decking area overlooking the relatively large beer garden and nearby canal.
However. The main selling point of this pub has to be their downstairs function room; complete with a private bar. It is rare to find 'self contained' function areas and set down a flight of stairs, The Black Horse's function area even has its own toilets (one disabled and one ladies). The function area is cosy with comfortable chairs on one side and a few dining tables and chairs on the other. Lastly there are double doors here which lead out to the beer garden - perfect for functions taking place in the summer.
