we were there late October, so we didn't get to go out to see whales as it was quite foggy, rainy and windy which was disappointing but not much you can do about that. The Inn was in a good location. Breakfast was great and plenty of it. We had supper at the anchor just down the road which was good also. The room was ok, its nothing fancy but clean and meets your needs. There is a big jacuzzi which was a nice touch. Perry and his sister and father were helpful and very friendly indeed.

Arrived after most restaurants and whale watching tour operators were closed for the season, but Perry and his sister took us out whale watching and it was great. Perry made us feel at home, making our breakfast, and allowed us to use his kitchen to prepare a bedtime snack. They were just as excited to see the whales as we were...and it was our first time!!

We ended up at Harbour Lights Inn by accident. We had booked a place on Fogo Island (one of the most beautiful places on earth!), but missed the turnoff to the ferry after our supper in Twillingate, missed the last ferry to Fogo, and had to turn back and look for a place. We stopped at Harbour Lights Inn, and they still had a room available, on the top floor. The room was quite small, but unbelievably romantic and squeaky clean, with a direct view on the harbor. Despite the size, it turned out to be quite practical, with just the right storage at the right place. The breakfast was nice, although not exceptional. All in all, it was a very pleasant "accident".

Large B&B with a good harbor view. Location great. Our room was quite large with a Jacuzzi (which we did not use). Breakfast was a mix of do your own (toast, muffins, cereal) with eggs cooked to order. Our biggest issue was that the bed was extremely firm as were the pillows. So we were a bit stiff in the AM. Price was reasonable.

Twillingate is a beautiful place. Harbour Lights Inn is clean and well maintained. When we arrived at the Inn we went in and rang a bell on the desk. We listened to voices coming from a back room for a minute or two. When Melinda came out she was unsmiling. She told us the "Rules and Regulations" (her words) for the Harbour Lights Inn. She told us that her seasonal summer rates were higher than the rates quoted to us over the telephone. (When we left she said she would let us go at the cheaper rate originally quoted). We were the first guests who went down for breakfast the next morning. We arrived five minutes after the published start of breakfast time. Melinda was working on her computer in the corner. We wished her a good morning and asked if we were too early for breakfast. After several moments Melinda stopped working on her computer and took notice of our presence. We found Melinda unfriendly. There was a box in our room asking for tips. We were disappointed at Harbour Lights Inn. All the other places we stayed in Newfoundland and the Maritimes were much more friendly.

Room Tip: Top floor rooms are up several flights of stairs.

Sorry, I cannot agree with those who are giving this B & B a thumbs up. I have had a lot of experience with Newfoundland B & B's over the past twenty years and this one ranks up there with the worst in my experience. The house appears nice from the outside and on entry. The beds and bedding were very cheap and did not feel clean and fresh. The bathroom in the one I was in had good towels but the bath tub had rust around it and the floor was slanted. Everything was cheaply done. Old houses do not have to be poorly done. The group I was with had two rooms rented and all of us felt the same. One said she would not pull the covers up as they were dingy. The breakfast area was very crowded and the choice of "eggs, scrambled or fried" was the served breakfast. Of course there was bread to toast and so on, but I really don't know where the friendly hostess was. She peeped her head out of the kitchen every few minutes to see if she had served everyone who wanted eggs! I am used to getting a much better breakfast at a B&B. My experience was, as someone else stated, money, money, money. Pay when you come in, and go to the restaurant down the road (I learned from a local that it was family-owned). Anyway, for one of the people in our group, this was her first experience in this type of enterprise and I would venture to say, her last. I live in Newfoundland and was touring my guests around. I have to say, the night we stayed here was lowest point in their two week vacation. I was embarrassed by this and I think the people who rate it need to have a thorough look at it.

Lovely verandah overlooking harbour. Outside stairs at the back of the house make it easy for luggage and a great place to sit with a glass of wine and enjoy the sunset. This is a 3 storey house that is over 180 years old. It has it's problems, but it is old. Twillingate is an old town filled with history. People didn't move out of a house here, they moved the house to a new location, either floating it or dragging it over the ice. Building materials were in short supply, so there was not a lot of building newer homes. We fell in love with Twillingate. We did see whales on our boat trip and there was an iceberg, but it was very far away. The locals like to go to the lighthouse and watch the sunset and whales. We saw both orcas and humpbacks at different times in Twillingate. Great food in the restaurants, moose, shellfish and cod.
We found Melinda and the other staff very pleasant and helpful. Thank you for a great time and suggestions.
