After reading lots of glowing reviews of the Inn at Onancock we wondered if it could live up to the reputation. It absolutely did - and some !!!
Lisa and Kris run a wonderful B&B and are just perfect hosts. The house itself is lovely and feels like a real home with just enough personalised stuff to make it feel real. Some US B&Bs feel a little contrived and appear to have been kitted out at "B&Bs-R-Us" with a samey look and style. The Inn at Onancock is not like this and each room is very carefully decorated in a particular style. Being big fans of the State of Maine we chose the 'Maine' room and it was just perfect in a real 'downeast' style. The room is on the third floor but occupies the entire floor with a lovely large bathroom with a super jacuzzi bath, which is excellent. The bed was also super comfortable with the comfiest pillows we have ever used. As soon as we get home we are ordering some on-line.
Breakfast was very, very good and all freshly prepared and with portions to suit all tastes, not too much, not too little, just right !! In the evening Kris and Lisa host their "wine-down hour" at 6pm each night and provide complimentary wine or beer to share some time with other guests at the Inn. Lisa manages to create some home made nibbles to have with the refreshments which were lovely. It all works very well and they manage to provide a very nice adult-beverage session with the opportunity for a nice chat with fellow travellers. This breaks the ice nicely for the following morning as everyone shares the large dining table for breakfast. Having met the previous night made the conversations easy and plentiful. A nice touch also is the complimentary water, sodas and coffee available at all times from the fridge and coffee machine in the hallway.
Onancock is very small and very quiet in a very nice way. Having travelled down from Washington DC this was the total opposite but it was a welcome break from the buzz of the city. We took the option to try a kayak trip with South East expeditions based in the Town Wharf. Bill, who runs the business, was a great guy and as complete novices we were paddling around the local creeks in no time, and we never fell in the water !!! Definitely recommended for a fun morning or afternoon.
The town is a few hundred yards from the Inn and it's all very easy indeed. Can't wait to go back and thanks to Lisa and Kris for a great stay and great hospitality. We cannot recommend the Inn at Onancock highly enough. Just fab !!
