We stayed there from July 7- July 14. We have 2 kids, one who is 14 and makes him an adult in Cuba, and thus we needed two rooms. I had sent a Facebook message to David who is in charge of the rooms for adjoining rooms. He was very accommodating, giving us 2 rooms in building 3 on the second floor. They were next to each other but not adjoining which was fine. Building 3 overlooks the pools and the ocean. It's not noisy at all, I noticed some reviewers thought it was.
We stayed at the Tryp before and when we were there in 2011 and visited Flamenco Beach on a tour, they were building it then. So I liked the fact that it is a new resort owned by a Canadian company, Sunwing. This is the main reason we chose to go to this resort instead of going back to the Tryp and the fact that Tryp has opened their hotel up to Canadian students who trash the place. We are sure glad we came here instead, Memories has won us over!
It is a very family oriented hotel with something going on for everyone. If you want to play games or be lazy, no one will force you to play like they tend to do at other places by coming and dragging you up. The rooms are new and clean, A/C runs really cold, so cold our windows were fogging up. The room safe is digital like Canadian hotels, no key required and its free. They decorate your rooms everyday with the sheets and towels and hibiscus flowers. The in room coffee was really good. There was a good selection of Canadian TV channels, CTV and even HBO. And we never saw a single bug in either rooms, and believe me, I look for them.
The food was excellent. The A la Cartes were super, even my picky son liked everything he got (he normally survives on Pizza). We really liked the Beach BBQ and the pool BBQ, a whole pork, loads of whole fish, paella with shrimp and crab, scalloped potatoes at the beach and wedges at the pool, and cucumber salad at both places. The Diamond Club Lobster dinner was awesome. We thought the food here was the best from all the places we've been in Cuba. No one had any stomach issues at all. No flies in the buffet, which was a nice change.
I was leery on the rocks on the shore of the beach, but we all took water shoes and it was fine. When the kids were sick of snorkelling or floating around the ocean on their floaties they would come back to the shore and flip rocks to see what treasures they could find. We found lots that make you want to wear shoes through it. It was always low tide in the afternoon, so perfect time to flip rocks and hunt. They did close the right side of the beach when we were there to bulldoze rocks away and it looks like they are doing both sides as they have marked it out with the survey stakes. Ocean water temp is warm, high 80's or even low 90's, perfect! Take lots of sunscreen, you will burn through it quick. And don't forget to rinse off saltwater before reapplying sunscreen, you will get a rash. We never had any issues getting chairs with shade at any time of the day, beach or pool area. Take bread to feed the Ballyhoo fish at the beach, they come in swarms.
There is Wi-Fi, $6 CUC per hour. Turn on your airplane mode when you leave, buy a card and enable with the password and login. Never turn your airplane mode off. They say its slow, but I uploaded 9 pics onto fb in about 2 mins, faster that my Koodo 3G.
The shows were really good, but the theatre is super hot and the air doesn't move through at all. Sit on the left side, halfway up near the outside and that's the only place a breeze moves through. They need to maybe put some outdoor fans in there to get some air moving.
I suggest you spray with Off before you leave for the airport in Canada. You can't pack aerosols in your carry on, so it's better than nothing. You will get attacked at the airport. Everyone on our plane did. And on your return back to Canada, when it's time to pay your departure tax, make sure you count your money out in front of the ladies. I counted our $100 3 times and stuck it in our passports. My husband counted it again to make sure and then again at the tax counter but not in front of her. She took the money and came up with only $90 and said we were short $10. I said nope, but she didn't care, pay or you don't go through. Lesson learned! Cigars were around the same price at the hotel that they are at the airport. Don't buy your liquor until you go back to the airport and cleared customs or they will make you put it in your suitcase.
We can't wait to go back again!
