“Fantastic Holiday”
Reviewed 14 April 2014

It's my fifth time in Cuba, first time in this resort. I'd like to say I am very pleased, had a fantastic time and would definitely recommend. I would like to mention that I also completed a diving course whilst I was there at SSI, it's internationally recognised, diving centre allocated in Hotel Tryp Cayo Coco, instructors name is Osvaldo great guy. Like I already said, would definitely recommend! Lovely stay!

Reviewed 14 April 2014

My husband and I just got back from a one week stay at the Sol Cayo Coco.
We didn't have the same positive experience that others had with the staff but we did see that behaviour exhibited with other guests. Most return guests were treated like family and that was nice to see. We found it difficult to get a hello/hola or a smile from the staff.
One "staff member" that we did have to mention because of how amazing she is, is Baby (Barbie as some called her), the masseuse. My husband and I arrived to de-stress and one of our first trips was to get a massage from Baby. We get massages regularly at home and while on vacation and Baby was so good we took the time later in the week to get a tune up before leaving. She knows what she's doing and if you want a relaxing massage, she's great at it and if you need something a bit more, she's amazing at that too. She's usually outside the buffet at breakfast time booking appointments. If you do anything while there, see Baby for a massage!
My husband and I did a lot of research before picking Cuba and Sol Cayo Coco as we are regular warm weather travelers. We wanted to try something less expensive this time around and heard that Cuba was the place to go, especially this year with the Canadian winter the way it was! We are regular visitors at Sandals resorts and knew that we were not going to get a Sandals experience in Cuba. The rooms at the Sol Cayo Coco are definitely in need of some updated but they are clean, as the cleaning staff take a lot of pride in the work they do. We did get a chance to experience two different rooms while there and although they looked quite similar the amenities were different in each. The beds in the first room were hard and for us comfortable. The king bed in the second room was very soft, old and not comfortable. The TV in the first room had great reception, the TV in the second room had very poor reception and the colour had gone in it. We did get it replaced after a few days of the staff trying to fix it. The second room had a hair dryer, bath mats, mats beside the bed whereas the first room had none of those things. Something that we were unsure about when we first arrived was the lack of real internet access (the speed is extremely poor and unless absolutely needed, not worth the price). We were pleasantly surprised that we didn't miss being off the grid!
We did have 4 of 7 days in cloudy and very windy conditions but we still were able to enjoy the beaches and the warm temperatures. The beaches are the best thing about this resort! As you'll notice from other reviews there are two of them and they are completely different from each other. You'll always be able to find a lounger on the beach, and if you're on the public beach on the west side, you can easily lay your towel right on the sand!
Speaking of towels, this is one area where we found that a few guests were not open to the differences between their culture and the Cuban culture. The towels (both bathroom and beach) are not always available due to the cleaning of the towels being performed offsite. You might not always get fresh towels but the staff are very apologetic! Once we realized WHY the towels could not be changed we were very understanding and even tried to help explain the situation to others.
If you've been educated by Sesame Street as a kid, you'll do okay with communicating with folks, but Spanish is definitely the going language here and the more you know the better off you'll be.
The food - we are foodies. We knew going in that we weren't going to be blown away with any of the food. We were quite happy with the variety of foods that were provided at the buffet. The burgers at the snack bar were edible as well. The a la carte restaurants had the worst food we ate while on the trip. The atmosphere in both of the restaurants was very nice however. The freshly made eggs and pancakes in the morning at the buffet were the way to go! We did have issues getting water and refills on water at our tables at every sitting, but we learned to bring our own water from the bottle provided in the room everyday. Overall, you'll be able to find something that you like at the buffet. The fresh bread everyday is amazing! The food ends at 10pm. That's something that if you travel to other resorts you might notice is different. Once the buffet closes, you'll have no access to food. Just something to remember, especially if you're a late night snacker!
We booked the 1/2 day tour into Moron with the speed boat ride on a fresh water lake and into mangroves. It was a great way to experience the culture of Cuba. We had time to walk around town after listening to a Cuban band at a local bar. When going into Moron, make sure you bring toilet paper and hand sanitizer!! This excursion was well worth the minimal price if you're looking to experience a bit of the Cuban culture.
The shows at night were a nice surprise as well. The dancers were quite fun to watch, the lip synching is entertaining as well. We were able to see all of the shows outside, however two of the shows were held inside at the disco and we were not able to see them as we are both very allergic to cigarettes and cigarette smoke and could not breathe in the disco. Cigarette smoke was the biggest problem on our trip but it's something that we encounter on pretty much every vacation. The lobby area at night was a place we had to avoid because of the amount of smoke. We did sacrifice a bit every night though as the cappucinos made at the lobby bar were addictive!
We did have an issue with cigarette smoke coming into our room through the air conditioning one day and let the front desk staff know. They explained that the ventilation systems in the rooms are connected and that the people next door were probably smoking in their room or out on their balcony with the fan in the bathroom on and that air gets circulated through the air conditioning. We were lucky enough that it only happened that one day or we would have had to change rooms as we didn't think it fair to ask the neighbours to stop smoking where they were allowed to smoke.
The grounds of the Sol Cayo Coco are beautiful. I can imagine that it would be quite lush right after the rainy season. It was quite dry and brown while we were there. There are plenty of activities to keep you busy, even on the rainy days. We enjoyed playing beach volleyball one day, although I don't suggest anyone dive in the sand as there is concrete right underneath. Lesson learned!
Go exploring around the area! There's a local market about 1km up the road, and you can get a pass to access the Tryp Cayo Coco resort just another 500m from the market. Explore their grounds and restaurants for lunch. We did that and walked back along the beach. It was a great little excursion of our own.
We didn't take advantage of the cheap transportation to Sol Guillermo and Playa Pilar but did hear that it was another adventure to experience.
We didn't have any issues with mosquitoes, but we were prepared with our bug spray. Bring plenty of sunscreen! Bring a converter if you want to use any of your electronics. The $15 package that we purchased at WalMart before leaving was perfect.
If you're into protecting the environment, or wanting to consume a large amount of beverage, bring your own water bottle/drink holder. The resorts use a lot of little plastic cups and recycling is not a way of life here.
I would recommend the Sol Cayo Coco to friends and family looking for some warm weather, decent food and beautiful beaches.

We came home from our first trip to the Sol Cayo Coco on April 4th and were very impressed with the resort and the staff.Everyone was so helpful and friendly. The rooms are large and kept very clean. Beaches were beautiful especially the public one and the pool was lovely. We went to two ala cartes, which were nice, but we were just as happy eating at the buffet for breakfast and dinner and the beach grill for lunch. Bartenders at the pool bar were always smiling. Duane in the lobby bar was amazing and fun to watch.Staff at reception were very helpful. We hired Jordan to take us to Moron to see the sights. He was a great guide and even took us to meet his mother. All in all it was a wonderful relaxing holiday and will certainly return some day.

This was our second time staying at a Melia hotel in Cuba and again we were extremely pleased with everything the resort had to offer. We loved the fact that the resort was only a 15 minute bus ride from the airport...very convenient. Upon arrival at the resort the front reception clerks very friendly & warm...and check in was very fast & efficient. We also had requested an upper floor room which they accommodated for us. BONUS!

The rooms are very spacious and very clean...we had a partial view of the ocean which was fantastic. Palm trees draped our balcony which we were able to take advantage in the late afternoon when we just wanted to sit & read. There are so many elements of the resort that we enjoyed it's hard to put into words...but I will do my best to give you somewhat of a breakdown of the things that impressed us the most.

First off our travel agent Hola Sun were fabulous and provided a great representative Rene who was very helpful and provided us with all the information required to have an incredible vacation. We realized upon arriving that we had forgotten our converter which in Cuba is very important...you will need it to plug in any electronics as there is only a 220v service in Cuba. The staff at customer service were very accommodating with this and allowed us to plug in our cell phone & gopro as these were used quite frequently. We fell in love with the staff at Sol Cayo Coco...they go out of their way to make your stay very pleasant. There were 2 very special people that we became close to...our waitress Blanca who greeted us every morning for breakfast and had our amazing cappuccino's (best ever) ready at our table for us. She was always smiling and eager to take good care of us. Also our waiter Andy...a young man going through University for tourism...we fell in love with him as he was so genuinely friendly and very efficient with his duties. It's hard not to fall in love with the people at this resort...they have a joy for serving others...rare to find these days! We were able to leave gifts for our maids who were so diligent in making sure our room was spotless each day and also gifts for Blanca & Andy...such a joy to be able to bless these people...they are very hard workers.

I loved the fact that there was a beautiful cove at one end of the beach with a breathtaking rock formation that served as a platform to view the incredible span of ocean in Cayo Coco. We were able to snorkel and see many forms of oceanlife. There are plenty of cabana's at the beach and we were never without one...it is quite windy at the beach but it is a saving grace as the sun can get extremely hot in the afternoon hours. Adjacent to the main beach is another little quiet cove that we explored and took advantage of as well...it was a little less windy and had miles of beach to walk on as well. Absolutely loved the array of colors of the ocean and there was a constant motion of waves...breathtaking!!

The food was very tasty and lots of variety in the main restaurant area. I especially loved the omlettes for breakfast that Michael prepared for us...thank you for taking care of us :) For lunch a favorite was the panini station and salad bar with tons of variety. For supper the chicken kabobs & ocean perch were two of my fav's along with their homemade ice cream and fresh fruit. There is one a la carte restaurant which to be quite honest I would prefer the buffet restaurant much more. A special treat they have for their guests is a churroh station...if you have never had these...they are a MUST try!!! Just a warning...they are extremely addictive...lol. There is no shortage of food and they try to add new elements each day...they have spices you can add and I especially enjoyed their peanut butter on my morning toast.

We decided to go on a boat adventure which was a total cost of $90 for two people...totally worth it. It was a two hour excursion where you pilot your own jungle boat exploring the intricate network of channels cutting across a virgin mangrove jungle. Discover the underwater world by snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of Cayo Guillermo. The current was extremely strong in the snorkeling area but there is a rope provided...we were able to see many different kinds of oceanlife as well as watch our instructor feed an angel fish. I would highly recommend this excursion...well worth the money. We were also able to snorkel every day off the shores of the resort. BONUS!

The entertainment provided at night by the resort was both comical and entertaining...we enjoyed the nightly shows. They were well organized and also the entertainment in the main lobby and poolside bar. We especially enjoyed the Charlie Chaplin look alike...he was extremely entertaining!! The resort hosts an array of beautiful scenery and gardens...always well taken care of by the gardeners.

Another great feature of the resort was the local market that you can either walk to or take a little miniature train ride to. Local artists set up their booths to sell their merchandise...it is a short 2km walk which we did or a short train ride for 2 peso's. The market is very unique and well worth checking out :)

All in all I would highly recommend this resort as it offers everything you would want for an incredible vacation at an incredible value...we will be back again next year...can't wait!!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 1404...great selection!

Returned 28th March from a fantastic time at Sol Cayo Coco. My friend and I are two ladies of retirement age, we had a really great time. The staff were so friendly and helpful but most of all we felt very safe and content. It was a lovely experience to stay at this hotel the, beautiful beaches, nice pool where we could always find a sun lounger. The room 1341 was looking a bit worn but we had a lovely view overlooking the sea, very clean and loads of space for our belongings, the cleaning staff were great and very trustworthy. For the price we paid the food was very good plenty fresh fruit and veg, and a nice selection of freshly cooked food, complementing the large buffet. The drinks were good and the cocktails were excellent. The manager was always on hand asking if everything was ok. The entertainments Team were very hard working and put on some really good shows, really enjoyed Michael Jackson ! We would like to say a huge Thanks to all the happy, smiling, helpful staff at Sol Cayo Coco.

Room Tip: Room 1341 was quiet overlooking the gardens and sea.

I have just returned home from an amazing 2 weeks in sol. I have been previously before (10x) and still love the hotel!
One main reason why people keep coming back to the hotel is because of the staff, they are the most loveliest people I've met, however, around 3-5 staff members need to learn how to smile.
I keep coming back to sol not just because of the gorgeous beaches, lovely food, staff, entertainment and overall experience; it's because they feel like a second family they would do anything for you.

However, I do believe that bands for returning customers should go back to silver to show who has been committed to the hotel.

Also, during my time at the sol the manager was eager to learn of any improvements that needed to be made.

See you next year Sol Cayo Coco
