“A wonderful relaxing holiday”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

Just returned from our fourth holiday at the Sol. It is the only Hotel we have ever returned to in all the years of travelling abroad. It is so peaceful and relaxing that it is a perfect place to simply chill out. It isn't for everyone, however. If you are looking for lively, activity-led holiday you will be disappointed. It is a small, friendly Hotel where everyone gets to know each other , chat together and have fun - which you have to make yourselves. If you find it difficult to mix you may find it a long holiday.

The Hotel needs up-dating and some renovation work is on-going. The Beach Restaurant and Auditorium were closed for refurbishment, but no work was being done whilst we were there. The Umbrellas and Sun shades were being replaced at the time.

Everything seems clean and tidy around the complex but the pools could be cleaner and many Guests mentioned that toilet paper was missing in the toilets, especially later in the day. The Gardeners work really hard to maintain the gardens.

The rooms are large and cleaned daily. The beds are Queen- sized and quite firm. Some of the linen has seen better days but if you want anything changed the Maids and Customer Services act promptly. The Air-con works efficiently.

The Beaches are cleaned daily and are one of the main features that draw us back again and again. The Sea is beautiful and crystal clear. The Beach Bar serves snacks and drinks - Joe looks after all of his customers very well and always with a smile.

The food is adequate - you're not going to Cuba for culinary delights. The selection of food is limited but there is always something tasty to eat in the main Restaurant. If anything, the food is much better than when we were last here two years ago.

The Don Diego a la carte Restaurant is disappointing. The food is presented well but nothing special. There is a resident pianist plonking away all through the meal on a piano that needs re-tuning badly and so loudly you can hardly talk to your neighbour. More sedate background music would be a definite improvement.

The animation team work hard but are totally out of touch with what people really want. They cater for the young rather than the more aged visitor who can not and do not want to join in the more bawdy games and boring Bingo! In fact, the whole entertainment is from a different era and needs to be drastically reviewed

Dear customer,

It is always good to receive constructive review of a client who has been four times in the hotel.
The Hotel has planned some upgrade works, but we believe does not affect customers, especially in low season, and change many umbrellas around the pool.
'll Check carefully the issue of toilet paper in the bathrooms, also will review and change the menu of the restaurant Don Diego, we know that the piano has a very loud sound, but not so easy to fix, the restaurant space is very limited.
Regarding the animation, Forever are trying to improve, it is difficult to reach all ages and every taste, some want tranquility others want more noisy and active activities, review it.
hope to see you again for the fifth time in our hotel very soon.
Best regards,

Luis.

Travelled to the Sol from the 21st -4th June and had the most fantastic time ! I travelled with my husband and 19 month old, fantastic resort and hotel we couldn't fault it.

The staff are so friendly and cant do enough for you , always have a smile on their face even after a 28 hour shift.

Beaches are out of this world , hotel beach is cleaned daily and the local beach over the bridge brings a tear to your eye is that beautiful . One day it only had us and another couple on it! Shallow blue water and it was like getting in the bath!

Cocktails - AMAZING beer was great to endless types of drinks to choose from. The hotel always had Cuban music playing , most of the time LIVE and it was a really nice touch .

Food - we really enjoyed it lots to choose from if you are not a fussy eater pizza pasta and meat all freshly cooked and nothing is to much for the chef , pool bar and beach bar both serve snacks through the day and the lobby bar after 11. Very handy after a few drinks!

Room was lovely , bathroom a bit tired but we didn't go to Cuba to sit in the bathroom . Really large beds , air con, hairdryer and safe in room and the maids came daily.

Recommend the now Cuba trip we booked through Hector the rep - what a really nice guy he was full of knowledge and made our stay at the Sol really enjoyable .Also went to Pillar beach , fantastic beach and can hire a double bed with drinks for 10 cuc.Little train is great and my little boy loved it as well as the open top bus.

The whole holiday was absolutely fantastic and we will be back hopefully very soon, only let down was trying to book a trip to Havana or gain information about the trip before we left the UK its impossible via Thomas Cook !!!

Weather was brilliant , only seen about 10 mins of rain in two weeks .

Room Tip: We had ground floor , had a crab visit us in the night!

Hola...What an AWESOME resort that we highly recommend to all fellow CUBA lovers!
Colleen and I travelled to Hotel Sol Cayo Coco 24-31 May 2014, our 11th time to Cuba, 2nd to Cayo Coco, first to the Hotel Sol Cayo Coco.
I booked this vacation through Red Tag, flew on Air Canada, and paid about $1600 tax-in per couple. Note: Air Canada Rouge were great to fly with and Pearson check-in was the smoothest ever. My luggage was over limit on the way down and they allowed it without charge, TY!
This is a small resort of about 270 rooms, just the type we like, and believe me when I say it has a BIG heart. The people were ALL just lovely, caring and extremely attentive. Within a day they knew us and had our table, drinks or whatever ready as we approached, amazing!
A bonus of vacationing on Cayo Coco is that the aircraft lands directly on the island and only minutes away by bus. Beers are available on the bus if you don't get a chance to pick up Crystal cervazas, and the hotel money exchange is the same as the airport, so no rush required.
Check in was fast and efficient, but there is normally only one bellhop to help with luggage, so be patient, although I noticed most people prefer to take their own bags, maybe because all rooms are so close. Warning, there is NO elevator so if your room is on the top floor, DO wait for help, it's worth a 3 pesos tip!
Rooms are a good size, ocean view rooms truly have a marvellous ocean view! The furniture is a bit tired and management should start a program of replacing them. Bathrooms are a good size with walk-in showers and well maintained. Beds are of new quality and hard, linens of fair quality. Speaking of beds, if you must have a large bed vice two doubles, you should email the resort ahead of your arrival to confirm because there is only about 13 rooms with a large bed. (I have the email address if you want it, send me a note). I did not do this and received a room with two beds, not very romantic for your girlfriend eh? LOL
Midway in the week I noticed they advertised a suite for only $45 CUC a night and we changed rooms, OH MY...what a difference money makes! The suite is 2 rooms, a sitting room (TV, coffee maker, couch, recliners and fridge) and a bedroom (king bed, TV, chairs and table, and fridge) One fridge is stocked, turndown service every night, double balcony with upgraded seating and views to die for! The turndown service even changes your beach towels every night for you. If you want this suite, email before going and they'll reserve it for you, you pay the hotel directly.
Anyways, as you can see we LOVED this place! It's easy to get to everything. The pools are big and clean and deep. The top pool is split by a walkway, one side deep for adults and the other shallow for kids. There is also a lower pool that is a bit quieter for anyone.
The service in the pool bar, beach bar and lobby bar is 'second to none' as there is always someone close to take your order. I witnessed no long lineups during our week holiday as most people take advantage of the excellent table service. Another bonus is that there is plenty of good quality lounges around the pools and beach and 'lounge hogging by towel' is almost non-existent. Yay!
The buffet is clean and well-presented although there is not much change day-to-day, but believe me there is plenty to eat. Service was top-notch. Of note, the wine served during meals is not up to par and management should consider upgrading to another brand. As a back up, you can order a beer during your meal and it's served ice cold in a tall glass. You should try one of the cooking stations where the guys are waiting to cook you up something special. Remember, if you don't know what to eat, just ask one of the chefs to make you "their" favourite dishes, you won't be disappointed, promise.
Nightly entertainment is not the best I've ever seen in Cuba, but it's a bit fun and colourful. I think they need to focus on the night time entertainment and maybe consider some new acts and dances.
The one a-la-carte that was available was not as good as most, and a simple rule of thumb is that if it was a restaurant back home, would you go there to dine? This one was small and comfortable, pleasant actually with a pianist playing all night and great waitress service. I just think they need to revisit the menu and maybe come up with food more appealing to the average visitor. Worth visiting though, and they should have their other beach front a-la-carte (El Peron) up and running soon. The building received damage to the roof and they are in the process of repairing it.
As for repairs at the Sol, I must say that during the week the entire maintenance staff were diligently working everywhere; painting rooms, replacing doors, rebuilding and replacing palapas, so the Melia is committed to this property and each day it's looking better for sure! The small army of gardeners work hard everyday making the property sparkle, yet they always have time for a warm handshake or hug and always willing to cut open a fresh coconut for you. TY
Now, aside from visiting Cuba to connect with the amazing Cuban people (if you are not connecting, try asking them about their families; wife, husband, children, believe me they will open up and share their stories and pictures with you, they all have a lovely story to tell) you travel to enjoy the breathtaking beaches, and the Hotel Sol Cayo Coco has TWO beaches for you to enjoy. The two beaches, Las Coloradas and Playa Larga, are side-by-side but separated by an outcrop of volcanic rock. One is directly in front of the resort, while the other is less than a minute walk out the side of the resort. DO get to both beaches and experience the difference; the water is warm, calm and inviting.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention my new best friend, Oscar, who runs the Cuba House on the resort. DO get to meet him and enjoy his daily events such as "drink mixing Cuba style, Spanish guitar lessons, or Spanish language lessons". Or just drop in and enjoy the afternoon music he and his friends make; it's a small-venue that is certain to entertain you.
In closing, we loved this small resort with a BIG heart so much that we are now booking for our return in September, and yes we've already reserved the suite!
Below are just some of the FABULOUS people who make this place so memorable,
Cheers! Paul

Oscar; Cuba House "In-keeper", Alfredo; amazing Lobby Bar waiter since 1987!, Osliedy; the beautiful Lobby Bar waitress, Joe; great Beach Grill chef (try his homemade hamburgers!), Pablo; the friendly Beach Bar Host, Yoisi, Fab coffee maker, Omelio; most professional Pool Bar waiter ever, (he brinks you your favourite drinks before you order them!) Thomas the huggable Gardener, Yulka; speaks perfect English, serves in the Buffet and takes a-la-carte reservations with a smile! Hector; Food and Beverage Manager, always willing to 'make things right', and Luis, the GM, doing daily walk-abouts ensuring the resort runs to perfection. See you ALL soon!

Room Tip: Top floors better view, consider upgrading to the suite, amazing double room with even better VIP tr...

Indeed the heart of this hotel is huge and here we fit all that every day we work very hard to meet all the needs and tastes of our customers, it is very difficult to answer this comment, so long, so detailed and so accurate, thank you very much for sharing your experience with tripadvisor travelers.

Tripadviser

We are a couple in our early 30's.  We went to Sol Cayo Coco for 2 weeks from 21st May - 4th June.

We had an amazing time and have the holiday blues terribly!

The hotel has a mix of people of all ages, couples, a few families. Overall it's relaxed with activities available all day.

When we arrived, we had a wonderful welcome from the animation team dressed in colourful outfits and a cocktail each.  Fabulous!

The hotel is nice. When trying to find our bedroom, was a little surprised that there was no lift but that was ok as my husband took my suitcase up! :)

The room was well kept and was clean. The maids did a great job daily. Loved the way they made the beds, they always made an effort.

The food was good.  Sometimes I found some dishes a little salty.  I loved the chips and had a few plates a day!! The chefs were really nice. There were individual stations.  In particular,
Dinner time - the spaghetti/pasta man was lovely and served guests really well.
Breakfast - The man making the tasty smoothies is fab

The restaurant staff are really nice and are very genuine. In particular Blanca was amazing and a tall lady who worked with her also. They were really lovely people.

The snack bar at the pool is great! Luis, the bar manager is awesome. He's a very nice man and serves people very well.  All the bar the staff were lovely and came around the pool to take drinks orders regularly.  The food at the snack bar was quite tasty as well! Generally we had our lunch there!

We stayed around the pool area most days and enjoyed the quieter area near the gym.  The man who maintained the pool area was fabulous. He was such a kind man and very hardworking. A big thank you to him for all his hard work!

We went to the gym.  It's small but has everything you need to do a workout.  Yas is in charge of the gym and he was very helpful if you need any help.  He has a great personality and is very friendly.

We also met the tennis instructor, Rene - he is such a nice young man.  Very friendly, attentive and readily available if you need anything.  Yas and Rene both made our stay memorable.

The animation team very good dancers. Seeing then dance always put a smile on our faces.  Most of the team were very friendly and I really enjoyed spending time with them.  Alberto and another young man (don't know his name but he's the smallest one!) were wonderful. They both spent time showing me how to salsa and move like a Cuban! :).  Esther is great, she makes a lot of effort and makes people feel special.  Juan Carlos is an amazing young man. He loves what he does and that's great to see!  Ask him about his portraits :)

There's a 24/7 bar at the lobby which was a nice place to sit, have a drink and watch some TV or people watch :)

The reception staff are really nice and efficient.

The beach was nice and breezy.  It wasn't very busy so that was very nice.  There's always someone there to get you a sun bed.

We went to Havana for 2 days and loved it. We went with a local man called Roberto. Him and his brother run a taxi and excursion business. We would highly recommend them. They are hard working and provide a great service. We felt safe and looked after during our trip to Havana.

We loved our holiday at Sol Cayo Coco and are looking to return next year.  The staff have made our stay very special and we can't wait to go back!

Thank you to all the staff who made our stay memorable!

Highly recommended!

I had a hip replacement 3 month prior to this trip so just wanted to chill and exercise gently and this was the perfect venue! The hotel is convenient for the airport,10 to 15 minutes coach travel, which I always think is important when you have been on an aircraft for 10 hours from the UK. You just want to get into your room, shower, and get a beer. so top marks for location. The beaches around and part of the complex are fantastic with a couple of bars on the beach too, lots of beach beds so no worries about certain nationalities claiming them all at first light.
I was initially impressed with the buffet as on the first night they had a whole BBQ`d haunch of beef which was fabulous between two hunks of bread, but over the 2 weeks the food seemed to become mediocre and repetitive. But it was plentiful and there were ommellette and seafood chefs at each main meal, although sometimes the queue made it not worth while to stand around. The many types of fresh baked bread was immpressive too!
As for the staff, in the main very, very friendly in a genuine way, but some guests always spoil the staff by tipping every day to get the best service and not at the end of the stay as is normal on package holidays. some of the restaurant staff seemed to think they should be tipped at each meal.Tipping is an important part of their wages so don`t skimp but lets all do it the same on the last day.
The drinks where local and not entirely to my liking but they did have genuine Jameson`s whiskey as part of the all inclusive so that was not bad.
Bar staff were great and very professional, always smiling and happy, I can`t imagine how some did it as no one lives in and the nearest town is an hour away by bus, our favourite night time barman lived a three hour ride away so spent 6 hours a day commuting but still had a grin at the nights end.
The manager was a most pleasant chap who often walked among the guests asking if all was ok.
There is an on site Doctor 24 hours at state rates, which I had to use as I got a severe chest infection and had to be nebulised twice daily for three days, she slepped in the surgery and was very caring.
Would I go back? No, seen that, done that, but I would recommend to anyone

I really don't expect much from an all inclusive unless it caters to the rich and famous, which I am not. I go there for the location, in this case, prpobably the best beaches in the Caribbean, at least from what I've seen. The Cayo Coco beaches are beyond description and if you go a bit further to Cayo Guillermo and Playa Pilar, you'll know what's good. But to the hotel

It's OK. The rooms are great. Big and spacious, clean and a bathroom with everything working. We payed 15 US extra over the standard for an ocean-view room (includes a surf-and-turf dinner) and that was a good choice. The gardens are not particularly interesting or well kept and the outside infrastructure is pretty run down. We had a minro technical rpoblem with the door lock and it was promptly fixed. The bars by the beach and the pool are standard, watered drinks and a constant flow of beer.

The buffet is, I would say, mediocre at best, with a huge variety of tasteless stuff that repeats and repeats. Would be better to have a smaller choice but better quality. Maybe produce, fruit, beef and good fish is hard to come by in the area, and maybe deep fried batter over everything is waht people like. Things start out well for breakfast decay somewhat for lunch and..., just skipp dinner.

But all that is unimportant when you get to the beach and when you start interacting with the staff. They are sweet and caring; they are Cubans. They are all state-employees and the salaries are, generally speaking, low. The tip is a significant part of the family's income. Be generous but don't overdo it.

The dive center at the Meliá, 100 meters up the beach is pretty good, although I wasn' carried away by the diving itself. They are thorough and helpful.

And please don't miss Playa Pilar. You'll thank me for the advise.

Dear Customer,

Thanks for taking a few minutes of your time and write your comments in tripadvisor, I have read with attention and I agree with you that has enjoyed one of the best beaches in the Caribbean.
as to the buffet I note your criticism and I will discuss with the Executive chef to try to improve, however really appreciate your words about the hotel staff, no matter if you are rich or famous, all treat equally and hope can return to this paradise.

Best regards from Cuba,
Luis.
