Hello everyone, and thank you for reading this honest and long trip report about the Melia Cayo Coco in Cuba.
Me: 49 years old male
Date of travel: 14th to 28th of June 2014
Let me first say that we were at the Melia Cayo Coco in June 2013. We liked it so much that decided to return this year to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and my birthday!
We left Montreal with Air Canada on Friday, spent the night in Toronto and left early am on time, Saturday with Air Canada Rouge, which was a bit disappointing, I really prefer the regular Air Canada, but that as nothing to do with the hotel…
Arrived at Jardines Del Rey airport, very fast at security, got our luggage, changed some CAN $ to CUC at a small counter right outside the airport, (you can also change at the hotel, and it’s a little cheaper!) Got 2 Crystal cervesa at 2 for 5.00$ can. And hop on the bus for a 10 minutes ride to the Hotel. Check in went smoothly, they booked us a standard room when we paid for the superior lagoon room, when the lady at check in saw that, she immediately changed our paper and we had our beautiful lagoon room, and it was ready! Very smooth and efficient process, a golf cart took us to our room # 3512 and we were on the beach by noon!!!
BEACH/ANIMATION: Of course the beach is wonderful, that is one of the reasons we go to Cayo Coco, some day smooth and calm like a mirror, other days a bit choppy, depending on the winds, but always warm and beautiful with amazing shades of blue and aqua. We are morning people so we are at the beach around 6:30am, so never a problem getting palapas, but I’ve seen those available often pass 9:00am. A beach/garden employe helps with placing your sun bed. Around 10:00am the animation crew arrives at the beach, they walk on the beach, say good morning and invites you to the different activities. Bocce every morning, (great way to meet people) dance lesson, aqua gym, and a craft or painting lesson. And at noon the crazy game, were you can win a bottle of rum! Always fun, but please people, don’t take that too seriously, it’s only to have fun…….!!! A huge congrats to the crew, they are the reason why it is fun, they never force you to do anything, they simply invite you. They work hard, it’s hot but they always smile and are so in to it, here’s the name of a few of them (Senor Pedro, please take good care of them! And let them be themselves, that’s how we like them) Yaneilis, José, Jorge,Myslaydis,Richie: Thank you for such a great time!
FOOD: Cuba as a bad reputation for food, but if you complain about the food at MCC you’re probably a very picky eater. Food is great, well prepared, nicely presented, well cook; really, you can see that they put lots of effort into it. The buffet as lots of choices, from appetizers to desert. Cold cuts, cheese, smoked salmon(delicious) a different soup every day, bread, pasta, a piece of meat, and the most delicious banana flambé. Breakfast is complete, with eggs made anyway you want, omelletes smoothies and anything you want in a breakfast. There are 3 A la carte restaurants, Italian, Cuban and International. The service at all 3 is amazing; we went to all of them. The Italian was good; the Cuban was really nice by the beach, really nice food and atmosphere, but the best is the International, close to a five star restaurant. Food, service ambiance, music, all very nice. Do not miss it. For lunch you can eat at the buffet or at the grill near the beach, they cook different meat and fish (fresh) on charcoal, delicious. Don’t miss Cuban day on Wednesday, music, dancing, singing, and they cook in a huge pan, a mix of seafood, don’t miss it, it is absolutely delicious.
There’s the beach bar, were you can find the best bartender in Cuba; Yamil! He will mix you anything you want, he is very good, and if you’re a Montreal Canadiens fan, give him a GO HABS GO!!! He’ll understand. The lobby bar is full of everything you want to drink and the service is fast and efficient and always with a smile. As repeat guests we were invited to a great lunch, hosted by Gipsy, we thought it was a nice touch. And Gipsy hope you’re dream of having a baby will soon be a reality.
The pool: Good size, pretty quiet during the, some animation and a volleyball game every afternoon around 3:30. Lots of palapas around the pool, and the 24hrs bar/restaurant is just steps away.
THE ROOM: We booked a lagoon room, they are newly renovated, are very nice.
It is a big room with 2 beds put together, that was, to us, comfortable, a nice bathroom, with a large shower. It was always very clean. There’s a huge balcony with 2 chairs and a small table, and 2 sunbeds. We were facing the sunset, beautiful. AC was working well. Small fridge with beer, water and cola filled every day. The cleaning crew did a great job all week, both morning and night for the turn down service. Had towel animal and flowers every day. Nice touch.
In conclusion, I understand why people keep going back to MCC, it’s because of the Cuban people. They are so nice, they are always smiling and ready to help or serve you, and you don’t get more service with bigger tips and they don’t threat you differently if you are a 25th time visitor or a 1st timer. The place is small, adults only and we had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful people from Portugal, Germany, made new friends that we will keep in touch for sure, from England, Mississauga, and Québec.
Senor Innereraty, this is for you; keep up the great work the MCC is great because of your staff, please say hello and a big thank you to everyone who had a positive impact on our 2 weeks vacation: Niurka, thank you so much for the Gazebo dinner, the highlight of our vacation, we won’t forget that evening, and great service from Josef ! Lobby; Arley, such a bright and intelligent young man, he will be a manager someday! Yenni, sweetest and most beautiful smile at MCC, and Livan always great service. At the Buffet, Eddy, Aldo, great service and thank you for chilling the red wine ! Jorge at breakfast, always waiting for us with a coffee. My wife says thank you for the little gift.At the grill Leandro, who actually remembered us from last year, keep up the wonderful work, and you French is impeccable ‘’mon ami’’. Beach bar, the one and only Yamil…thank you, but be careful Yamil because Angel will soon be as good if not better than you !!!Animation; Pépé! If you look in the dictionary the definition of animation you will see Pépé`s face. This guy is absolutely wonderful, hope he stays at MCC for ever. Alexander the great, everybody knows him and he is one of the reasons we go back to MCC. Alexander the magnifico and the beautiful Mavi, thank you. Thank you to the garden and beach employee, Felipe, Leansy,Donnie and Livan.
So, of course we will be back to MCC soon (maybe January 2015..)to see our friends again and make new memories…Thank you all for making this vacation a memorable one. Do not hesite to go to MCC you will not regret it. If you have any question, please feel free to ask, it will be a pleasure to help you.
