“The Best Rum Sours in Haiti”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 November 2013

I loved this place. The bar is amazing, and I spent most of my time in Jacmel at the bar. The old colonial architecture is awesome, and the bed was huge, 7 feet square at least.

The lobster was great as well...only place I would ever consider staying in Jacmel.

Room Tip: The courtyard rooms are a bit hot, so upgrading a bit would be a good idea.

Beautiful place with comfortable rooms. I've stayed there for couple days where I enjoyed my time. I have met the manager and he was really nice with me and people around his business. The staff is really responsible and the bar comes alive every night with great music. I have had a good service. For instance, good sea food, etc. Also I can't forget Beleck, Roseline and the staff for the great service. It was great for me.

This hotel has beautiful architecture, art and court yards. It is lovely and romantic. When visiting Jacmel, Haiti, this is the place to stay. The staff is personable and the bar comes alive in the evening with patrons. The hotel is located in the historic district and isnot far from the beach or the old Jacmel Market.

Room Tip: Upper floors with balconies are quite nice.

I have stayed at Hotel Florita a few times in 2010 and recently returned last month. It is situated in the middle of the rebuild of the Historic Jacmel area, a relaxed and genuinely friendly part of the fabric of Jacmel. Close to the heart of the city and the center of good food, great conversation and occasional live music. The rooms are comfortable.

Beautiful building and gardens! Comfortable rooms, good food, hospitable, personable! Most interesting and informative conversations with the owner Mr. Joe, a long time Haitian of American descent. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: all rooms are good.

I was in Jacmel for a week with a group of about 30 folks who have been working for the last 2.5 years to raise funds and build a children’s center. We did not stay at Hotel Florita, however we did have lunch there one day.

Like all out meals in Haiti they were buffet catered style as we were with a large group. And as all our meal in Haiti they exceeded our expectations. We ate the same food pretty much every day, rice & beans, fish, some type of meat, plantains and a vegis of some kind. You would think we would get bored but everyone prepared them different and everyone prepared them well…Hotel Florita was no exception.

The exciting part of Hotel Florita was being taken on a tour following our meal and learning about the history of the hotel. The hotel itself is beautiful and as you walk through the rooms and up and down the gorgeous staircases you almost feel yourself walking back in time. If you don’t look too hard at some of the surrounding property you would never know there had been an earthquake which is a testament to the care they took repairing the structure (there are photos of the damage in various places online). There are beautiful gardens and the hotel itself is in an area of Jacmel that is generally rich in history and culture. There is a great eclectic energy about the bar and restaurant area and wish we could have been there in the evening!

Even if you are unable to stay at the Hotel Florita, you have to check it out!

This was my third trip to Haiti, but the first on which I could have some time to explore the country, together with my wife (I am an Episcopal priest and have in the past been on church-partnership trips). Jacmel and Hotel Florita had been recommended by friends, and our experience there surpassed my high expectations. I found the place totally charming. We stayed in the main building in a very comfortable room with a balcony where we enjoyed relaxing and gazing over the street. The bed was comfortable. The water was hot. The fan kept us cool. The art and architecture was amazing. It reminded me of the Oloffson, but in better repair and with better service. The staff were all friendly and helpful, and the food was terrific, including the rum sours. One of the best things was the way that the restaurant/bar served as a meeting place for very interesting people passing through town. I only wish we could have stayed a few more days.

Also, a gregarious man named Michel sort of adopted us early on and served as our guide whenever we needed or wanted any assistance in Jacmel. If you need a translator or someone to show you around at all, I would highly recommend him as well. We spent a lot of time with him, and our short time there was the better for it.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The finest house in Jacmel. Built in 1888 in "New Orleans" style. Furnished with antiques--art is everywhere. The best restaurant and bar in town--by far. Jacmel is the safest and most charming town in Haiti--and Haiti has always been the most interesting country in the Caribbean for sophisticated travelers. The Hotel Florita is the only 19th Century house that is as it still in daily use. It is an opportunity to see what life in Jacmel was like for the coffee merchants a hundred years ago. Jacmel was built on coffee--the cash crop of subsistence farmers in the mountains--and still has the best coffee anywhere. We now have a pool and will take you to any local beach--and pick you up as well. We arrange for you to get picked up at the airport--or exactly how to take local transportation to get here. We arrange excursions and do whatever we can to make your visit to Jacmel memorably pleasant. We have a large and comfortable restaurant and bar.
