“nice place to stay in Culebra”
Reviewed 10 June 2013

We just finished a brief but enjoyable stay at Tamarindo Estates. It provides clean, modest accommodations, accurately described on their web site. We had 2 connecting rooms (302 and 303) for 5 people, and planned to have one stay on the futon in the living room, but it was unbearably hot, even with fans and windows open, so 3 people crammed into the air conditioned bedroom (we live in PR, so are accustomed to the climate). The units are old and nothing fancy, but they are well maintained and clean. The caretakers are friendly and helpful. Kitchens are stocked with the basics. Did not use beach or pool on site, but the snorkeling at Tamarindo Beach just down the road is excellent. Stop there some night and look at the stars! Flamenco Beach, just a few minutes away by car, is incredible. Airport and town just a few minutes away by car. You should rent a jeep if you stay at TE, despite the fact that car rentals are very expensive on Culebra. The road to TE is steep and in poor condition, full of pot holes; I wouldn't want to drive a golf cart on it. We had no cel phone signal at TE; had to drive down to main road to make calls/receive data. So...a good place to get away from it all! It would be nice if they would upgrade their full size beds to queen, or two twins.

Tamarindo was a great place to stay if you know what you are getting yourself into. It should be mentioned that a car or golf cart is a must have unless you have gone grocery shopping and stocked up on water ahead of time. I would still rent a car either way though as there are so many great beaches on the island and it's nice to be able to get to them easily.

The private beach is amazing with lots of coral and fish. We even say rays at the private beach and Tamarindo Beach is right down the road where you can swim with the sea turtles.

The property manager Tom was fantastic and very helpful. The cottages themselves could use a little facelift, the beds could use new mattresses and we had a small problem with ants but the seclusion of the place was great and the experience overall was phenomenal.

I asked the family if we should try something new for spring break, but was voted down, so for the seventh (!) time we returned to Tamarindo Estates to swim and snorkel. The reef by the beach is fantastic and we also walked over to see the turtles and the stingrays at the adjacent beach. We generally prepare food at home and sit and enjoy the view from the deck - a magical place.
I would love to see wider beds.

Ok, so the cottage itself gets really hot in the afternoon, and the living room/kitchen very minimal BUT you can go down the path to the beach, which is accessible only to renters. The reef there is just a few yards offshore, and totally unspoiled. Never have I seen forests of fan coral and beautiful small fish of all colors. Go down the road to the public Tamarindo Beach and see turtles, many turtles, and some rays. None of this requires a boat--you just pull on your fins and snorkel and paddle a few minutes.

Room Tip: Don't choose 303--it's way too hot. Some of the others looked far better sited.

This was a beautiful rental with it's own private beach area (with excellent snorkeling) There is also a beautiful pool and patio that is beach front, private, and was rarely in use by others while we were there. Tamarindo is a quiet, romantic or family oriented place to stay. The caretakers were very responsive, and the place is very clean. The view from our unit was amazing and we loved spending time on the balcony taking in the scenery! The units are more expensive than some places on Culebra but well worth the extra cost. And since there is a kitchenette, you can save money by not dining out for every meal.

Room Tip: Unit 101 has the best view of the beach

The location, the views, the beauty of this spot cannot be underestimated. Yes, the bed was a little bit smaller than we are used to, and the decor a little bit outdated, but this doesn't matter when you wake up, go outside on to the veranda, and just drink in the solitude and tranquility of the place. Culebra is a wonderful place to visit, just magnificent. I wish we could have stayed longer. AND the owner went above and beyond the call of duty by posting back to me - in London! - some underwear I had left behind! Thank you Jose. I would highly recommend this place as a beautiful, calm retreat.

After booking 5 days of diving/advanced dive instruction with Taz Hamrick @ Aquatic Adventures I booked cottage 302 at Tamarindo. After flying in, and a 10 minute taxi ride we checked in just in time for a magnificent sunset over the out islands. The kitchen half had adequate cooking utensils, while screened windows overlooking the patio/ ocean and a ceiling fan kept temps bearable. The bedroom /full bath half had very quiet, phenomenal ac which made for restful sleeping. We had prompt taxi service down to Aquatic Adventures(15 min to town) with Kenny of Willy's Transportation Service. Since my daughter just finished a summer of pool side life- guarding, we spent our time, other than diving, at World famous Flamenco Beach rather than at the lovely pool. Nor did we snorkel the great beach or kayak the bay, both just a few minutes walk from the cottage. After numerous trips to Hawaii and life in the Bahamas, I would be hard pressed to find a better patio view of a tropical paradise than that from our patio. Evening sunsets and relaxing mornings with sailboats crossing Canal de Luis Pena while sipping fresh coffee, and listening to island birds is hard to beat! The diving with Taz was great( my daughter got her advanced open water certification) while the relaxation at Tamarindo was also superb. If island paradise, away from the crowds is what you seek, this is for you.
