“Snorkeler's Heaven”
Reviewed 9 August 2014

Tamarindo has a fantastic location for beach-goers and snorkelers. You can snorkel at the small on-property beach and see more than just about anywhere in the Caribbean. For the more adventurous, you can walk along the shore until you get to Carlos Rosario beach and enjoy the BEST snorkeling in the Caribbean. Tamarindo is not a luxury resort. It won't cater to your every whim. Super quiet. Great sleeping. Easy access to Flamenco. And by the way, you should try visiting some of the other beaches on Culebra as well...

My family of four just returned from a 5 night stay at Tamarindo Estates. They are exactly as advertised: simple w an amazing location. The snorkeling is off the charts and private. The pool is clean and refreshing. If you are looking for luxury and pampering, look elsewhere. If you are looking for a very real - "raw" as another guest described it - Tamarindo Estates is the perfect choice on Culebra. Tamarido is isolated, at the end of a rough patch of road, and incredibly quiet.

Room Tip: Our center apartment #202 had an amazing view of the channel and preserve.

The place has a great location and view but terrible in the cleaning department. The apartment was small, cockroach were in the kitchen area, bugs were found everywhere, everything was dusty, towels were old and stained, bathroom area wasn't clean (I had to bring Lysol to disinfect), the water that you use to take a bath, wash your hands or dishes was rain water that wasn't purified correctly, the fire extinguisher was due, there wasn't any smoke detector; in a wood building is necessary. But that wasn't all the person that represent the estate, which is the person that we first saw when doing the check in was very unprofessional, the woman was very arrogant, we wanted to talk to manager because we didn't feel that we were treated correctly, there wasn't any manager (surprise surprise no one was available to take our complain and help us) every single night she left notes in our door to call the "manager" when at first there wasn't any ( if we are paying for services we are suppose to be treated correctly and if the manager knew about our situation he or she was suppose to help us right away ). The pool area is far from the apartment, the keys doesn't open the gate you have to jump the fence so you can open the gate, good luck finding the restaurant! They are better places in Culebra at a good price, Tamarindo Estate is expensive for the services that it offers you!

Room Tip: Rooms dirty

The person making this review checked into our hotel on July 18, 2014. She booked for two (2) persons. When the caretaker on duty took her up to the room (the guest followed in her jeep rental with dark windows) she discovered that they actually were four (4) persons, that is, two adults plus two teenage children over the age of 12. The maximum occupancy for our 1-br apartments is three (3) persons. Two children under the age of 12 are considered as one person, but this was not the case here.

When this person checked in with four (4) persons we could have insisted she book an adjoining room, as is the norm for a family with older children. Since we were booked, with no extra rooms, we made the concession that they could stay all in one room. This is not our allowed-occupancy standard, and we are strict about this!

It was during all the discussion about the guest having to pay for the extra people, that the guest started trying to find fault with our establishment.

The guest insisted that on the booking site it says children under the age of 21 are included in the price. What it actually says is that two children under the age of 12 are counted as one person and have to pay $20 a night. Any children over the age of 12 have to pay $20 a night for each one.

The caretaker on duty gave the woman my phone number (I am the manager, and I happened to be off of the island). When the woman did not call me, I located her written booking confirmation and the following day emailed her with a copy of her booking (for two (2) persons) and also a copy of our policy as stated on the Internet. I also told the guest that, as a consideration for her family, I would only charge for one extra person, thereby letting one child stay free of charge.

Our apartments are basic beach rentals, but we pride ourselves on the cleanliness of our rooms. The staff all work hard to insure a pleasant stay and more people than not are happy with the accommodations.

As for the fire extinguisher being due, we service the extinguishers regularly and they are not to be updated again until March 2015.

As for roaches and all manner of bugs in the room, when we check someone in to our hotel, we escort them personally to their apartment and we do a walk through with them, even looking in cabinets to make sure everything they need is present in the room, and everything they do not need, i.e. bugs, are not present.

As for having to climb the fence to get to the pool, there are two keys on the ring given to the guests at time of check-in. It is explained to them that one key is for the apartment and the other for the pool. No one ever has to climb the fence to enter the pool!

As for the pool and beach house being far from the apartments, the apartments are on the side of the hill so as to have the best panoramic view of the ocean. That is clearly shown on the web site. The pool is located in a pleasant setting on the oceanfront. Most people prefer to walk to the ocean and pool. However, we do have a road leading there from the apartments for guests that prefer to drive their vehicles.

As for the water at the hotel being rainwater, it is not. We get our water from the P.R. Aqueduct and Sewer Company, the utility that processes and supplies potable water to most homes and businesses in Puerto Rico.

First, the location. The Tamarindo is a little ways from town, and there is a fairly bumpy road you have to take to get there, so I don't know if a golf cart or moped is the right choice. We had a Jeep, and it was overkill. The location is very close to Flamenco beach, but the Tamarindo has it's own, much less crowded beach. The Tamarindo beach has a pool proximal to it, as well as a large shade structure, and while it's not a broad sandy beach (it's actually a bit rocky), it has excellent snorkeling right there. A sea grass area with turtles, and a reef area with fish. Tamarindo beach has rental operations near by, so renting kayaks is easy.

The views are great. Across the channel are a number of small islands, and the cottages are up the hill a ways, so the sun rises/sets are excellent, and you're far from any town lights.

The rooms are basic. You get pots, pans, a microwave, Directv and some wifi. The water heater situation is a little funky (a tiny heater integrated with the shower head), but it works well enough.

The deck is excellent. We spent most of our time outside, rather than in the room.

The structures have 3 units/floor, and it appears that the rooms can be connected for large families.

The staff was very accommodating.

We just got back from a week at Tamarindo, and we were not disappointed. There was one other couple there and it felt like we had the place to all to our self. Cabin 303, was small but it was just right for two, (anymore would of been too much). The jeep rental was perfect and so happy the golf cart was sold out. The top on the jeep helped with sunburn and the air conditioning was a must. Every night there was a great sunset from the patio, and every morning snorkeling at Tamarindo beach led to turtles galore. The kitchen was small but adequate. Only problem, food on the island is very expensive so it doesn't matter cook in or eat out. Tip: bring bug spray

Room Tip: bring bug spray, caretakers are GREAT and helpful with requests

The cottages are basic but clean and comfortable. The staff friendly and knowledgeable. The pool and beach house are a big plus too. It's a short drive to tamarindo or flamenco beach or to restaurants, so rent a jeep or golf cart. We really enjoyed the views and the beach, and we found it very relaxing. Just be aware that there is not a lot to do here - or anywhere on the island. (Buy your groceries in PR) But if you want to relax and you love beautiful beaches, this is a really sweet -and private- place to stay. The only reason we're not giving Tamarindo Estates all 5's is because it's showing a little wear (and they do need to spring for better pillows;) Otherwise, we liked everything about it and recommend it. We will be staying here again!

I proposed on the beach while staying here.
We rented a gas golf cart (cheaper than a jeep) and it was enough to get us through the massive potholes on the 15 min drive from the airport (going at 10 m/h).
We got our own secluded private beach cabin, it had some kitchen utilities, but was not stocked with all the required things we needed.
The place has a private beach which had some pretty amazing snorkeling, an no trespassers (non renters) allowed.
Our water was not running for a considerable portion of the trip which really sucked because we were cold and wet and dirty, and couldn't get clean. The managers let us use the shower at the other unoccupied cabin, but the issue was never really resolved since we only stayed there for only two nights. They said it had not happened before.
The house did not seem very well sealed, and I felt like the bugs outside would have no problems crawling in even if we closed all of the screens. Cleanliness wise it was just ok, but could have been a lot worse.
The view in the morning is pretty much to die for, I don't think you could find a better view if you went to heaven.
The bed was a little hard and not too comfortable, and a little squeaky.
Managers were nice, and hospitable though, and very helpful, they tried hard despite the facilities feeling a little run down / older.
It was hard to beat the price for all the benefits this place provided.

Room Tip: Get the lone one that is not attached to any other units for ultimate privacy.
