Casa Ensenada on Culebra is a nice guest house with a dock on the bay; we stayed in the "estudio" which was a spacious room with king bed and futon, fridge, microwave, internet in room, and tv. Not elegant, but very clean & comfortable. The dock area is shared by all guests, which can make it crowded at times, but it has a table & chairs, hammock, grill to cook on. The owners are very good about sending out info prior to your arrival, but are not on the premises except they came by at our checkout time. We needed a first-aid kit once, but there was no one around. We were there the week after Christmas and publicos were not in abundance, so it was hard to get transportation. We would try calling the numbers on our cellphone, but most did not answer. It took us over an hour to get a publico to get from airport to Casa Ensenada. Fortunately, this inn is located within walking distance of good eating places like Mamacita's & El Batey. Also, the Vieques Air Link is very unreliable, sometimes runs several hours late. For our return flight to San Juan, we had booked an afternoon flight. But the morning flight had not gotten off until 3 p.m., so our 4 p.m. flight was obviously not going to happen that day. And the next day the ferries were shut down because of winds,...Casa Ensenada on Culebra is a nice guest house with a dock on the bay; we stayed in the "estudio" which was a spacious room with king bed and futon, fridge, microwave, internet in room, and tv. And the next day the ferries were shut down because of winds, rain & rough tides. So we ended up having to pay a fortune for a charter flight to get off the island so we could make our flight connection from San Juan back to Charlotte, NC.
Warning: always build in extra time -- if your flight back to the U.S. is on a Wed. afternoon, plan to leave Culebra on a Tues. morning to allow for delays in getting off of Culebra. Another warning: grocery stores on Culebra are only open half days, so if you arrive in the afternoon you may not be able to buy staples like orange juice to keep in the fridge in your room. Make sure you take your own supply of anything like bandaids, tylenol, sunblock (extremely expensive if you buy it in Puerto Rico), etc. Plan as if you are going to a third world country, totally uncivilized. The electricity goes out at times and internet is down so you lose contact with the rest of the world.
Note: the folks at the trailer that is the public library are very kind & helpful -- a wonderful resource and they have staff/volunteers there more hours than the grocery stores, banks, airport, jeep rental places and post office!More
