Big Island volcano tour, departed Kapalua West Maui airport. Captain was great and informative. Flight was on time. Made sure everyone got an opportunity to see the sights. Flight was great. Yes it was a little bumpy. That's to be expected. Small aircraft, slightly gusty winds, updrafts from the volcano....it will be a bit bumpy. The aircraft is very reliable and performed well. Views were fantastic. My wife and girls (teens), really enjoyed this experience and they are not experienced flyers.

Very hard to sum up how amazing this trip was. Thought about doing and then decided against and did at last minute and every second was amazing. Captain Bill is not only a great pilot but he gives a great tour and is very easy going. He did everything to make you comfortable and dipped the wings so you could get that perfect shot. It was smooth as silk

Our chances of seeing the lava and the volcano were slim to none on our flight out that day...due to the "Vog" (fog and volcano activing with lack of wind). That wasn't evident when we took off, but the news had talked about the situation. We chose Volcano Air Tours because it was the only way to reasonably tour the volcano while we were in Maui (and the lava was actually flowing). We checked the reviews on TRIPADVISOR and decided to go for it. The other "advisors" were helpful...You will be loaded into the plane by Captain Bill (in certain order). Expect that it could get a bit too warm in the cabin as there is no air conditioning. You wear earphones on the flight but you can't talk to each other thru them...the cabin can be noisy thru the flight, so don't expect to be able to really talk to each other throughout the flight (practice your Charade moves). And REMEMBER, this is about a two hour flight in a small plane, avoid drinks prior to your flight ; ) We thoroughly enjoyed the scenic part of the early flight, even with the lowered visibility. Captain Bill was great about 'dipping' the wing for picture opportunities and such. He did recommend the person taking the pics sit on the 'right' side of the plane...but the views were good for all. (FYI, there is a very back seat spot that didn't look too comfy, nor did the older woman (70;s) in that spot look too happy, and she looked really hot)
The lava site was exciting...and, as other 'advisors' had mentioned, the plane has to maintain a higher altitude than the helicopters so expect that the view will not be as spectacular...but we all were still just as thrilled! Obviously if you are staying on another island you may have other options...but from Maui...we would definitely recommend Volcano Air Tours! (ps...be prepared for 'tip' suggestion at end of tour).

I can't fault the company that the volcano goddess has decided to settle down. We were expecting to see huge rivers of molten lava streaming down into the ocean and at this point in time, that is simply not what is happening at Kilauea.
What we got was a lovely 2 hour tour in a Piper Navajo along the coast of Maui (spectacular scenery of beaches, sea cliffs and waterfalls!) and across to the big island to the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
We saw small rivulets of lava flowing into the ocean but they were hard to see through the billows of steam. The tour took us around the Kīlauea Caldera and we saw Mauna Loa (which was covered in a foot of snow thanks to a freak winter storm!) and its observatory.
On our way back, we did a fly by of Maui's Haleakala crater park which was completely cloud covered, (much like the day we drove up) and saw nothing. Ahhh...Mother Nature was indifferent to us!
The pilot did a few circles over the channel before landing for a bit of impromptu whale watching, which was nice because this is the season for whales all the locals are saying and they did not disappoint.
Hats off to our pilot, Bill. He gave a good running commentary of all the noteworthy sites, interesting anecdotes and history bytes.

Booking this trip with Sheila was a pleasure. She was so kind, friendly and understanding. Our entire vacation had to had to be rescheduled and she was so kind and professional as well as being genuinely compassionate to us in re-booking our Volcano Air tour. Super lady.

Our pilot Capt. Bill was great as well. Friendly, funny and very informative.

It was a very beautiful and exciting way to see Maui as well as the sea cliffs and waterfalls of Hawaii.

The small sliver of red lava we were able to see on a sea cliff the day of our tour wasn't exactly Nat. Geo channel, but it was still very exciting to see the enormous lava field and the flight was really a great experience.

I loved the plane and thought it was a terrific adventure from Maui to the volcano.

Thanks Sheila & Bill
