We have been to Mayhurst three times including when we got married. It's great for relaxing, wine tasting and taking historical sightseeing. Pat and Jack are fabulous hosts. We can't wait to visit again.

Room Tip: Our favorite room is Southern Charm

This B&B is in a lovely setting and the home itself is gorgeous and charming. The hosts are warm and welcoming and helped us tremendously is finding our way around the local sites. Breakfasts were out-of-this-world delicious and the grounds of the house are photogenic in the extreme. We want to go back!

Room Tip: Check the inn's website to choose the right room for you.

Mayhurst is ideally situated for historical sightseeing, wine tasting and the best restaurants. Gourmet breakfasts and wine and cheese at 5:30, where you may mingle with other guests, are an added bonus. Pat and Jack are welcoming and most helpful in assisting guests with details of their stay.

Room Tip: Southern Charm has a king bed and is lovely.

A charming historical B&B with delightful grounds and a pond. The owner/managers could not possibly have been more helpful or knowledgable about the area -- the ability to purchase tickets to Montpelier at a reduced price through the B&B was incredibly inconvenient -- and turned a good trip into a wonderful one.

The house was beautiful, the proprietors friendly, interesting, and accommodating. Breakfasts were amazing and accompanied by soft classical music that started off each day so peacefully. Best of all, they are well-versed in accommodating food allergies (mine are corn, soy, and gluten). Would absolutely stay there again.

Room Tip: The Piedmont Room has a hot shower with great water pressure and a second small room with a skylight...

If you're looking for a romantic getaway with historical surroundings, Mayhurst Inn is ideal! The rooms are decorated with period antiques, modern conveniences and luxury linens. The amazing 9,500 sq foot house is a testament to Italianate architecture and the care that has been taken to restore it to its present day beauty. Mayhurst is surrounded by nearly 40 acres of pastoral scenery for a quiet country walk and photo opporunities galore.

The breakfast was creative and fortifying with a beautiful presentation and impeccable service! The evening wine and cheese and chocolate truffles in the bedroom were also delicious!

Hosts Jack and Pat North are warm, funny and thoroughly knowledgeable about the area's restaurants, shops and historic sites. We felt like we were visiting old friends by the end of our stay! We will definitely be back again!

Room Tip: The Generals Room was lovely and quiet!

Why is this part of the country so wonderful to visit? Rolling hills and horse farms, Civil War sites, Monticello, Montpelier, Ash Lawn, the English quaintness, antique stores, an unusually high number of excellent restaurants, wineries, and the Mayhurst Inn. (A car is a must.)

Our second visit, my husband and I stayed three nights in the Southern Charm room; Robt. E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson slept here. (We stayed in The Generals' Room previously and prefer the Southern Charm's privacy and views). Mayhurst is a history-lovers dream. General Hill's 18,000 troops camped on the grounds of Mayhurst; the owners have bullets and other artifacts found on the property on display in the library, along with an extensive collection of history books. Montpelier is not to be missed, just four miles away. Monticello, outside Charlottesville, is about a 30 minute drive...also not to be missed...both have excellent tours.

The Inn has about seven large guest rooms in the main plantation house, 18 acres of grounds and pathways and a fishing pond. There is a large entry hall and parlour and library with lots of sitting space on the main level, and a roomy veranda with more sitting space in the back overlooking a bricked terrace. The lower level has the large dining room, kitchen, a guest room, and walks out to the terrace. Persian rugs, antique furniture, beautiful woodwork, lighted china cabinets everywhere. White linen tablecloths on the two large and two small dining tables, so you can join the larger group or dine just the two of you (they serve breakfasts only).

From the windows of the Southern Charm room (second floor) you see only the lovely grounds and woods around Mayhurst. Other reviewers have posted photos and good descriptions of this room. I will add that the bed is very comfortable; we slept like babies. And the room is quiet, except for charmingly squeaky floors. The inn was full, but we never heard voices, plumbing, rain, anything. This place is solidly built!

Pat and Jack, the owners are always working, but appear relaxed. They make all reservations for you, many with a discount. (In your room is a booklet with nearby recommended restaurants, very helpful). Pat and Jack are available if needed, but you are comfortable keeping to yourself if preferred. The 5 pm Wine and Cheese features local wines and gourmet cheeses. We are not really B&B "types", are somewhat hermit-like, but the conversation of Pat and Jack, quite a historian himself, and the other guests was so interesting as everyone told the adventures of their day, that we greatly looked forward to visiting with them during the happy hour and breakfasts.

The breakfasts were different each of the three mornings; we especially loved the baked grapefruit and apples and the blueberry pancakes and the Eggs Benedict and the...you get the idea. All prepared by Pat and Jack; don't know how they do it, except that they are extremely organized.

Parking is on a graveled area of the grounds; tv is located only in the library; umbrellas are available; water and soft drinks are free in a basket in the library. Location is just on the edge of town, very convenient.

Highly recommend the restaurants Elmwood at Sparks in Orange and Pomme in Gordonsville.

Only negatives, which I'm having to really be picky here to think of and am just trying to give a balanced review, are: we did miss being able to watch tv in our pajamas in our room at night. And there are a very few small areas of peeled wallpaper and paint. Both very minor inconveniences amidst so much comfort and thoughtful attention to detail in this inn.

We sincerely thank you, Pat and Jack, and appreciate the lovely, relaxing experience you made possible for us.

Room Tip: Southern Charm is a good choice: second floor, beautiful views of grounds, quiet.
