“Newest restaurant in town”

CJ's at Byrd Street has been open since May and has had the usual new restaurant hiccups, but they seem to have found their footing now. Four of us went to dinner the other night and everyone enjoyed it. Still a wrinkle or two to be worked out, but nothing drastic.

First, the specials were given to us right away, although as it turned out, when my husband ordered the entrée special, it was all gone - the server should have checked first. The soup of the day (peach based) was recommended and while we didn't have it, others told us it was delicious. [This is a small town, and one rarely goes into a restaurant without knowing several of the other diners.]

Steaks were ordered by three of us - one Delmonico and 2 NY strips, while the fourth had spaghetti and meatballs. All three steaks were cooked to perfection - the med. rare really was, and the medium was not overdone - and all were absolutely delicious.

The spaghetti was declared quite good, with several large (but not oversized) meatballs and the plate was clean at the end of the meal. The veggie of the day, Southern style green beans was actually quite delicious - cooked appropriately 'southern style' but not cooked to death. The mashed potatoes were tasty and real.

Dessert was a bit of a letdown, as it clearly came straight off the food service truck. A bland 'cherry' chocolate marble cake where the only cherry I could find was the one on top, an average cheesecake and a key lime pie that was enjoyed but would have been overly sweet for my taste. The coffee (1 regular, 1 decaf) was good.

The service needs a tad of tweaking, the worst sin of all being that my husband had half a steak left and got it boxed to take home. After we had gone half a block, he realized he'd forgotten it and we went back - only to find out that they had 'thrown it away' already. Might have been nice if they had held it for 5 minutes -he was sorely disappointed that he wouldn't have steak and eggs for breakfast!

The décor is pleasant but unexceptional.

Overall, we enjoyed our visit and plan to go again soon, and feel sure that the minor complaints will be addressed over the next few weeks.
