“Special location, hotel a bit tired”
Reviewed 29 October 2013

American River is a quiet and isolated area of Kangaroo Island. Excellent river, estuary location for fishing, walking and kayaking. The hotel has a bit of a monopoly in American River, where there isnt much in amenities like shopping, cafes, restaurants or bars. The hotel has a bar and restaurant but a dinner set for 6pm to 9pm. The food and drinks menu is not very extensive but well cooked and served.
I say the hotel is 'tired' as it is not very modern, there is a bit of history in the old place and is a series of these aging buildings meshed together. It could do with a spruce up.
The room is clean and comfortable.
Superior suites are not exactly superior, walls thin and can hear conversations and personal noises and the lower level is noisier due to thin floor above. Dont waste the extra $.

Room Tip: If you have a superior suite ensure its on the top level. Rooms are very noisy below.

We stayed in a standard queen room . The pictures were deceiving. The room in my opinion had not been renovated since the 80's. The only things that had been replaced were the TV and the linen. The bathroom was awful and smelled dreadful. The toilet looked filthy, I know it's a septic system but I don't think that's an excuse. The shower had a mouldy shower curtain and there were cracked and broken tiles. I think the reason there is no photo of the bathroom is that it is too small to get in to take one properly. The only lighting was two fluorescent strip lights. Luckily I had a torch in the car to read with.
The restaurant food was nice but the service very inconsistent. There seemed to be no one in charge anywhere in the hotel and no direction given to staff. People that served us seemed to be backpackers. We were given red wine in an ice bucket and served three courses within half an hour one night. It's lucky the food was good because there was no choice in the area it was quite isolated although beautiful.
Kangaroo Island is fabulous but if we were to go again we would choose to stay in Kingscote. This hotel really spoiled our stay but we had thought it would be good because it had the Mecure name attached to it.It will ruin their reputation. It needs to be closed down while it is renovated.
Not once during our stay were we asked if everything was ok. This to me shows a lack of confidence in their product.

We stayed one night in this hotel. The accommodations were well appointed, immaculate, and comfortable. Our package included a meal package, and we were treated to an excellent 4 course
In the hotel dining room. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, and we would love to return someday.

Right from the start of our stay Peter Hogan and its team (a.o. Jacqueline, Julie and Paula) gave us a good feeling. They were very helpfull in planning our daytrips and gave us warning that we didnot undertook to much for the time we planned (it is an enormous island). In the evening they always tried to talk with us about what we had experienced that day. Lovely chats with great humor.
The room was very big and had a nice view over the sea. It had a balcony with chairs. At sunrise it was a pleasant view with all these birds in the trees. We had an enormous bed to sleep in. The rooms were very well cleaned. It is a perfect location for walking and exploring the island.
The breakfast and dinner were a lovely treat. Here at last we found cheese and ham at breakfast. You could tell that they had a good cook too. The food at dinner was delicious and Peter always helped with the choice of wines.
In the mornings you should not mis the feeding of the pelicans. From Pelican Lagoon they come flying in over the water. A spectacular view.
Overall a relaxing place to stay (we were there 10-13 september 2013)

Hadn't known what to expect when we were dropped off at the lodge. Absolutely fell in love with the place. The restaurant was excellent....great food, wine and service. Loved that the rooms opened out onto a view of the ocean and were pretty nice and well worth the rate. For a smaller hotel, we were very impressed with the breakfast buffet. Check in and check out were prompt. Overall we enjoyed our stay at the Kangaroo Island Lodge.

Kangaroo Island, one of Australia's great wilderness destinations, is best known for its magnificent coastal views, unique landscapes, uncrowded beaches and fascinating wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, Australian sea-lions, New Zealand fur seals and Little penguins. Kangaroo Island is a place of natural beauty and a place to escape. Kangaroo Island Lodge is situated on the banks of Eastern Cove in American River, with all rooms perfectly perched offering exceptional water views over the bay. Amid lush coastal vegetation, Kangaroo Island Lodge blends in with its natural surroundings. There is no better place to unwind and to enjoy the peace and tranquility. The seclusion of this area allows for the abundance of wildlife to roam free. Tammar wallabies, brush tailed possums, black swans, Cape Barren geese, Australian pelicans and the rare and endangered glossy black cockatoos can all be found in here. The outer bay of Eastern Cove offers excellent sailing and fishing in protected waters. The Kangaroo Island oyster industry is also located in American River, with the Oyster Shed located just down the road from the Kangaroo Island Lodge. If you are a keen walker, there are two main walking tracks, the Independence Trail and the Fish Cannery walk. Both walks meander through the natural coastal scrub where numerous species of wildlife and birdlife can be seen. So why not come and escape to the Kangaroo Island Lodge? ... more   less
