From the moment we arrived we were made very welcome. Our room was available early(as we had managed to get on the 9 am ferry.) Although they were in the throws of updating some rooms nothing was too much trouble. Our room was large and well appointed. The restaurant served excellent food, generous portions ! All staff were brilliant and seemed to be enjoying their jobs, which was refreshing. We explored most of the Island and loved every moment. Thank you for a great stay.
The Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge is ideally suited (American River) for exploring Kangaroo Island. The rooms are clean and ok. The restauant is good but not cheap (24 AUD for an indeed excellent breakfast, 30 AUD for a Kangaroo steaks and 8 AUD for 0.3l beer). Unfortunately free WiFi is only available in the hotel lobby and bar, but the lobby closes at 11pm (No internet connection in the rooms). A tipp not ralated to the hotel: Mind that all gas stations on Kangaroo island close in the late afternoon.
We stayed here 2 nights in February and really enjoyed it. The staff were super friendly and also helped us out with early morning breakfasts delivered to our room both days as we had early starts both days. This was such a nice touch- really appreciated a good breakfast to start the day early with.
The place itself looks slightly dated but kind of added to its charm- the place has been there for a while and the pictures of people there many decades ago added a certain sense of history.
We ate in the restaurant both nights and enjoyed it very much both times. Was quite busy on the Saturday but the service was still good.
We did the dolphin dive with Kangaroo Island Marine adventures which I'd highly recommend, although wrap up warm! Was just a 30-40 minute drive to Emu Bay where it departs from.
We also attempted the nocturnal tour one night- basically just had a wander around the area with a torch and saw a few wallabies- we didn't go too far from the hotel, but sure there is lots to see if you venture further out.
Highly enjoyable stay here and on Kangaroo Island as a whole- beautiful place!
We got a great deal to go to this hotel, and the fantastic and friendly service made it even more worthwhile. Even though they were renovating at the time, the only disruption to us was that the sauna wasn't available. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, and the studio room overlooked the water.
Imagine sitting on the veranda of your studio room watching the black swans have breakfast while the sun rises over the American River estuary, while the parrots and magpies chortle and chirp in the trees overhead. Magical moments indeed!
The studio rooms are spacious and well equipped with a small " kitchenette" and dining area, couch, king size bed, single bed, walk-in wardrobe, extra storage and large verandas. Parking is right outside the room. The pool is large enough to swim very short laps. The barbecue area is adjacent to the pool and dining area, and the staff are happy to furnish you with all equipment needed for a personal use of the BBQ. Special thanks to Felix, who was very helpful. The hotel is well-placed for exploration of KI by car. Some of the best beaches are relatively ( KI standard) close by. Best beachs hint: Pennington for surf, Island Beach for wide white sand, calm, clear water and no people, and Frenchman's Rocr in Penneshott for reliable dolphin experiences. Recommended.
