“Excellent Value”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

Having stayed at the "Lodge" a number of times and returned for 3 nights recently, the upgrades and current standard puts it in the excellent class.
Good rooms with nice new fittings, excellent bedding, good Breakfast, excellent a - la carte dinner menu and quality, Staff were great, friendly and attentive. KI is a big Island and no matter where you stay there will be drives of an hour plus to reach some destinations, so location is fine and view across the bay is great.

We stayed in the "Standard" rooms, which were the cheapest available. It was a pleasant surprise to find the room recently refurbished, with new bathroom fittings and carpets. The room was spacious and had graceful high ceilings which really made the place feel open and bigger than it actually was. The bed was comfortable, there was minimal road noise although we could hear every single person walking past our door, and the 2 occasional chairs made a lovely place to sit away from the bed.
On the downside, the recent refurbishments forgot to add a drain on the bathroom floor, so water splashing out of the shower (more than you might think!) ended up on the bathroom floor headed downhill towards the carpet of the bedroom. Only quick intervention with the bathmat saved the carpet... I really think appropriate slopes and drains are essential in a bathroom!! Also, the trendy glass shelf in the shower is in exactly the wrong spot where any normal mortal bumps into it when showering, and the water collecting and dripping off the shelf hits the person in the shower constantly with cold droplets.
Finally, the air conditioner made weird noises all through the night, as it struggled to warm the high ceilinged room which kept us awake.
The room was lovely, especially for the cost, and despite the few little things that we found problematic, we would still recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay on K.I. It is really helpful that the hotel has a restaurant - we thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast - and it was lovely to wake up to the beautiful views that each room has.

Room Tip: Probably worth paying for the more expensive rooms, to avoid the few little problems with the cheape...

If you are visiting KI this is a great place to stay. I was in a suite which was great. Comfy and good quality.

Here is the clincher in my view. The dining options on KI can be limited. This has a great restaurant with a good wine list.

The location is OK. The distance to Admirals Arch is about 1.45hrs.

Would recommend this place.

The motel is clean & peaceful with exceptionally pleasant & helpful staff. Although facing a road, it is very quiet with very little traffic. We had a studio with king size bed & occasional chairs, plus patio & microwave etc. A nice Nespresso coffee machine too - but you might need to bring some additional pods. The room was spacious & so clean & well decorated. The ensuite bathroom was modern & again spotless. We had drinks in the bar & dinner in the restaurant. Good choice of wine & beer & a very nice meal - fish was fabulous & the steak tasty. Great value for money.

Room Tip: An upper room with a balcony facing the river itself - worth paying the extra for a studio

Kangaroo Island, one of Australia's great wilderness destinations, is best known for its magnificent coastal views, unique landscapes, uncrowded beaches and fascinating wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, Australian sea-lions, New Zealand fur seals and Little penguins. Kangaroo Island is a place of natural beauty and a place to escape. Kangaroo Island Lodge is situated on the banks of Eastern Cove in American River, with all rooms perfectly perched offering exceptional water views over the bay. Amid lush coastal vegetation, Kangaroo Island Lodge blends in with its natural surroundings. There is no better place to unwind and to enjoy the peace and tranquility. The seclusion of this area allows for the abundance of wildlife to roam free. Tammar wallabies, brush tailed possums, black swans, Cape Barren geese, Australian pelicans and the rare and endangered glossy black cockatoos can all be found in here. The outer bay of Eastern Cove offers excellent sailing and fishing in protected waters. The Kangaroo Island oyster industry is also located in American River, with the Oyster Shed located just down the road from the Kangaroo Island Lodge. If you are a keen walker, there are two main walking tracks, the Independence Trail and the Fish Cannery walk. Both walks meander through the natural coastal scrub where numerous species of wildlife and birdlife can be seen. So why not come and escape to the Kangaroo Island Lodge? ... more   less
