Almost as though you are the only people on earth, sit inside or outside and watch the wildlife and weather to its thing, drink the local red/white or bubbly and just unwind.
We had a great time, from 30ish to 90ish (age group) our entire family had fun and explored the island as well as just soaking in the awesome that is Ratcliff.
It is obviously an older home which has been done up extremely well. There are all the extras you might need in the kitchen and bathroom, and if you are anything like us (who struggle to sleep usually) you'll be out like a light in the quiet along American river. We spotted so many birds and roos it was quite delightful. Looking forward to getting back there in 2018, I'll report back again then, am sure it will be just as awesome...
Thank you Ratcliff
We stayed at the cottage for 4 nights, it accomodated 4 adults and 4 kids very comfortably. The kitchen is well equipped with modern appliances and most of the basics. Overall the property was very clean and although an old building it has been thoughtfully renovated to provide a warm friendly feel. A very peaceful location (great to sit down with a wine ater a busy day touring and lets the kids unwind in a safe environment). Only 15mins from the ferry at Penneshaw was a plus. From the booking to the day we checked in Kate was fantastic to deal with. We appreciated the portacot and highchair (two less things we needed to cart over on the ferry). Thanks Kate, we'll definitely be back to stay at Ratcliff Cottage again!
Lovely spacious cottage with a huge, well-stocked kitchen and cosy living room centred around a wood-burning stove. Comfy beds and good bath/shower room. But the best feature is the location - in a large wild area with kangaroos and abundant birdlife, sitting right on the shore of Pelican Bay, with several majestic Morton Bay Figs around the house. Just gorgeous: the perfect getaway (and with a helpful and understanding host!).
Kangaroo island is a great place for a holiday, and Ratcliff Cottage is a pretty much perfect place to stay. Situated right on the water edge, its not too far from either of the main towns, and Seal Bay, Vivonne Bay and Little Sahara are a comfortable drive away. Our 2 boys loved the Kangaroos coming around for dinner, and we appreciated getting some fresh produce from the garden near the cottage. This is our 3rd trip to KI, and this was the best place we have stayed at.
The weather has been unseasonably cold and windy this trip being our 5th time in KI. This did become frustrating at times as wanted to do some more exploring and I think it seemed to keep the wildlife away as unfortunately we didn't see much at all during our entire stay which was very disappointing. I was hoping it was that reason and not that the domesticated pets have dwindled down the population.
This property offers a beautiful, private and very peaceful location. Which is exactly what we wanted. The large old trees with a lovely tyre swing for the kids to play on added another dimension to the landscape. The old rocky jetty became a balancing beam for the kids to explore to water beneath them and spot crabs and starfish. There is also a lovely little island that during low tide the kids decided to walk out to which was a different adventure!
Inside the cottage it was neatly appointed. The kitchen had everything we needed and was not lacking in anyway - the pots and pans and crockery were all of a good standard.
The lounge room was comfortable and TV worked great - with a heater which we needed a lot during our stay!
The bedrooms were great - beds very comfortable- and they had cupboards with plenty of coat hangers.
The bathroom does need updating however. This appears to have not been updated in many years and was not particularly pleasant to use. My only complaint.
Overall the property was quite comfortable and the location is ideal. Close to shops in Penneshaw or Kingscote is not that far either. Great spot for exploring any part of the island.
The owners were lovely and couldnt do more to accommodate our needs. They were very efficient and friendly and helpful. One of the owners even has a fantastic Vietnamese take away on Friday nights at Baudin Beach was lovely!
The house is rustic in nature, well equipped with modern essentials and very well set up for a short stay holiday. The kitchen was generously provided with the basic food essentials and cooking appliances etc. and the beds were comfortable. The home is set in beautiful surrounds by the lake and you can rest and chill out, wander the grounds or use it as a very convenient base to explore the rest of the Island. We had a wonderful time and good memories.

This is a peaceful place to take a break well of the beaten track. having lived on an Island similar to Kangaroo Island but smaller, I really enjoyed a chance to experience island life again. Even the black swans on Pelican Bay reminded my of my 7 years of Island life. The Cottage is comfortable but may be cold in the winter so bring some warmer gear for the colder months. it is lovely to sit out on the deck with a bottle of wine and eat a lovely meal of fish caught out from Emu Bay. The house has most thins that you would want although I couldn't find a hairdryer, which surprised me given that the even had glad wrap in the kitchen. The house is a bit off the main road but this is the beauty of this place.
it is surprising to find that there are only a few reviews here. it is very hard to find on Trip Advisor which might be something that the owners could look at fixing.
