“The perfect cosy winter retreat - relaxation & romance!”
Reviewed 23 September 2010

My husband and I satyed at the Balinese Retreat last month and found it to be a really unique and relaxing experience which is exactly what we needed. We didn't want to be around too many people or do too much, we just wanted a luxurious weekend to be together, to indulge in some spa treatments and just to unwind. It was the perfect quick winter getaway in beautiful setting. Will certainly be going back in Summer!

Incredible surroundings, from the plants to the various water features/areas. Great layout for each of the rooms - main bedroom, bathroom, exotic room and the dining area outside in the middle of the lake. Each area provided a great romantic environment where you could really focus on each other as a couple and not be distracted by silly things such as TVs that you get in boring old hotel rooms! The heated floor tiles were absolutely fantastic and all of the architecture detail involved was very impressive. The spa was also great with the window and view (which can be closed off but there's no need).

You can tell they really invested money in this place, and thought about exactly the type of getaway that it could create.

The early check-in time of 3pm is decent and allows for a great afternoon and night with dinner, and then with all the yummy breakfast requirements for the following morning. The check out time is also acceptable!

Staff were friendly and considerate.

My partner and I were able to celebrate our anniversary with privacy and romance, and it felt especially special because the area is yours for the night and no one else is involved or near by.

My wife and I have stayed in many beautiful places in Australia but we have not experienced anything like this. Upon arrival at the Balinese Spa Retreat you are instantly drawn in to the beautiful and serene atmosphere that has been carefully and lovingly created by the resorts owners Deb and Mark. From the beautiful authentic Balinese interior to the stunning exterior of the retreat you will truly feel like you have escaped to your own secret Bali. We were treated with Massages, a Thai banquet for dinner and all the necessities to make our own breakfast each morning, all without ever having to go outside our front door. They even offered to wash our car! Now ask yourself what sort of resort does that!
When first learning that there was no TV, I have to admit that I was a bit worried we might get bored, however, we soon realised that there was plenty to keep us occupied and relaxed all at the same time. There is a beautiful spa that looks out onto a spectacular garden, board games, romantic walks, shopping about 10 minutes away and not to mention that some of Australia's finest wineries are just a 20 minute drive from the retreat (although you wouldn't think it once you are there). The best thing about our weekend though was the fact that we were able to reignite our marriage and spend uninterrupted quality time together in one of the most amazing places we have ever seen.

As someone who has stayed here a number of times for different special occasions, I cannot fault this establishment. The surrounds are spectacular leading to the room. Then upon entering the room a sense of relaxation overcomes you. The heated floors are a nice touch. The bathroom with a gorgeous view over gardens adds even more tranquility to the oppulence of the spa. The banquet was enormous - enough food for four. The bedding was extremely comfortable and we had one of the best nights sleep in a long time. Breakfast was provided in the fridge with a great selection of fresh produce. It was lovely eating breakfast over the water and watching the wildlife around us. The massages that had been organised for us were magnificent. My husband and I have travelled to many destinations across the world. We have stayed in many 5 star resorts and the Balinese Retreat exceeded our expectations. Anybody that would like to have an indulgent, romantic weekend away would not be disappointed with the Balinese Retreat.

We booked to stay at the Balinese Retreat for our first year anniversary. We were very excited and thought the $1400 price tag for one night was steep, but that it would be amazing and worth the price.

The venue itself was beautiful. It was very unique and special and we had a lovely time. However, unfortunately the lack of attention to detail and service really ruined the stay for us. Some of the things we thought weren't indicative of the price:
- No personal service (a letter addressed to Deborah & partner) in the room - as there is only 3 guests at any one time, this was not really acceptable
- The special lanterns that create the atmosphere weren't turned on, even after asking
- no crockery or cutlery to be found - eventually found in the dishwasher - not unpacked from the last guests
- the spa was terrible - it was so bad we thought it was broken, but when we called the owner down to look at it, she explained that was the best it could do 'because a larger pump is just too expensive'
- massage treatments (at additional expensive cost) were below average
- no late check out - not allowed to even ask as the answer is no
- owner complained when I went to pay by credit card that she would get stung with credit card charges
-owner couldn't remember why we were there (again, only ever 3 guests at a time, so this little stuff was important especially for the price)

The most disappointing thing however, was that I have provided feedback twice to the owners on our stay, which was really polite and very supportive and was given in a very positive spirit and yet they have never even acknowledged the feedback or provided any kind of response. Frankly, as I explained in my feedback, that at such premium prices, you expect both lovely surroundings and terrific service. In ths instance, the venue itself was beautiful but the service was terrible, and this has been compounded by the lack of care in any kind of reponse to the feedback provided.
I would recommend this if you were paying $300 for the night - not $1300.
Overall, the lack of service and care tuins what cold have been a beautiful and special getaway.
