“Very nice”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 May 2013

A lovely place to stay, nice and quiet, lovely big room and huge bed. All you need for a couple of nights stay. good selection of tea and coffee in the room and bottled water by the bed, and a glass of wine to welcome us.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 April 2013

I booked at last minute on Wotif having felt a little overwhelmed by the amount of choice in the area. I am so glad that I did. The property is beautiful, french feel with lavender, roses and established trees and olives, in the middle of the vineyards surrounding it. There is a lovely courtyard that the rooms look onto, it is sheltered and was a lovely place to sit and read my book and enjoy a cup of tea in the autumn afternoon sun.

The room was huge, the bed very comfy. Electric blanket a treat, and the underfloor heating lovely. Breakfast was continental, locally baked bread, jams, home preped muesli, a lovely start to the day. Bikes were available, but my sore wrist stopped me doing so. Lots of lovely vineyards within easy drive. WOuld be nice to have lights on bikes so you could cycle to dinner (only a tiny thing)

Previous reviews have complained about internet only available in the guest lounge- I think that this is great and adds to the ability to have a break from the outside world. I felt very chilled having spent 2 nights here.

The platter of cheese and nibbles was delicious and highly recommended.

The owners are lovely and chat easily. They gave good recommendations for eating, vineyards to visit and things to do in the area.

Many thanks

This was one place that sadly disappointed us during our recent holiday in New Zealand. There are lovely buildings in a stunning setting and our room overlooked the adjoining vineyard. The room itself was huge and very well appointed (though lack of a fridge was a pity) and Denise was welcoming, so the bones of a great stay should have been there.

But somehow it didn't live up to initial expectations. We felt the breakfast was poor and unimaginative and on our last morning we didn't even bother to have it but went to the splendid French Bakery in Greytown instead. The advertised wi fi access is difficult and the owners did not seem to be able to advise on how to get over the problems. Another guest helped but in the end it was easier to go and sit outside the local public library. There were bottles of water in the room for the first night but after that we had to ask for one. And while Denise was very helpful if asked about something we didn't get the same proactive service that we got elsewhere, for example in suggesting restaurants.

overall this seemed very much a business

Aylstone, Owner at Aylstone Boutique Retreat, responded to this review, 2 May 2013
On check in, all guests are given a personal tour on the way to their rooms for an introduction to the workings of the rooms, complimentary items (water is complimentary on arrival), guest & local information including restaurant & local vineyards. There is a telephone in the room and help is offered for any further assistance the guest might require during their stay with us.

The wifi is free of charge and at times some guests have had trouble getting on the internet with their devices. On this occasion I offered the guest the use of a personal computer of which was turned down. At no point do we pretend to be able to solve problems with devices that are not able to link to the internet service.

Breakfast alternates from day to day with the idea that we can supply variety to our guests and we have had some positive response as a result.

Its a shame you felt your stay at Aylstone Boutique Retreat fell short of your expectations. We are always striving to make our guests stay a relaxing one and to date this is reflected in the majority of the reviews we have received.

From the moment we pulled in to the Aylstone we were impressed with the pretty buildings and manicured gardens. Owners/hosts Bruce and Denise were just amazing and made the trip all the more special with their great activity recommendations and ever so helpful service. Always there with a smile-we even looked forward to the charming breakfast we enjoyed each day.
The room exceeded our expectations and no comfort was forgotten. Warmed floors, beautifully made beds and everything set ever so perfectly. It was a true delight to stay our 4 days. We can't wait to come back and enjoy Martinbourough and The Aylstone again soon. Thank you for our stay- Annabel & Matt

Everything about our stay was perfect - Bruce and Denise were amazing hosts, and provided great options for our visit to the Martinborough area. Our room was beautiful, as was the vineyard view from our room. Recommend this highly for anyone who plans to visit.

We were in Martinborough to visit the awesome fair they have a few times a year and having stayed in self-catering options previously decided to go for an upmarket B&B this time. Aylstone definitely lives up to it's name. The hosts, Bruce and Denise, are lovely, and happy to chat about options in the area for activities and meals - they made us feel right at home. The location is perfect - close enough to town and wineries to walk (though you can also borrow their bikes and it's quite flat) but far enough out that there is countryside around you which really makes it feel like a quiet retreat. The furniture, manchester and decor in the rooms is lovely with beautifully appointed bathrooms and bedrooms - the chocolate on our pillow when we arrived was a lovely treat. We opted for one of the rooms with a king bed which was very comfortable. The continental breakfast was yummy - particularly the little pastries, the muesli and the homemade bread. We were in Room 4 so had to shut the curtains to the main courtyard for a bit of privacy but they have plans to open up the little private courtyard behind the room which sounds fantastic. Till then, Room 1 is also a King and has a lovely view of the surrounding vineyards. We hope to return next year to check it all out again! Note that the restaurant on site is only used for breakfasts or functions (not dinner - the pics online on Trip Advisor are out of date) but I can definitely recommend Tirohana just up the road (see my review).

We just spend one night in the Aylstone Boutique Retreat, just so nice. Gorgeous room with attention to the smallest details with vineyard view. Nice simple breakfast in the morning with excellent coffee. The only small negative was that the WIFI did not work in the room, but we were told of that in advance. Our only regret was that we did only stay one night! Highly recommended.
