“Great day out!”

My husband and I needed some relaxation and decided to ride this trail which is 14kms from Kaikohe to Okaihau and return, so about 30kms altogether, as we left our car in the town. We had our own bikes and the trail is mostly flat and easy going. We are not regular bikers so found that the 30kms was just the right length for us. I found out afterwards that there is in fact another 7kms southwards, which would have added 14kms to our ride and that would have been too much. The weather was on best behaviour (middle of May) and we ate our filled rolls bought in Kaikohe at Okaihau. We discovered that there was a cafe that was open in Okaihau but we hadn't wanted to take the risk of getting no lunch! The scenery was mostly farmland, but there was also a very dark tunnel and lovely view of Omapere Lake to enjoy.

We had our own bikes and started the trail at Okaihau leaving our car parked there. The first 500m is testing until the trail climbs up to the original rail route. It's all very pleasant with good traction and regular signposts en route. The scenery is OK and it's a relaxing ride. We didn't see any toilets. The tunnel is short and curved but easily managed. It's about 13.5kms to Kaikohe but we crossed the road and carried on another 6kms to the end. There are about 45 cattle stops each way - 17 of them have either wooden posts in the middle or metal contraptions so one has to dismount. Not a problem though. Other rail trails we've ridden haven't had these but maybe there are more horse riders and motor cycle riders up north? We returned to Kaikohe for a coffee stop and found an excellent place on the main road on the right going down. Not a lot of competition in the place! We then cycled back to Okaihau. Apparently the cafe at Okaihau is a good spot but we had replaced our calories in Kaikohe!

We went as a family group (adult children) and had a great day. The ride is pretty flat so easy to ride - and being on an old railway track means you don't need to worry about traffic etc (there are a couple of roads to cross though). Lovely countryside and a nice way to see more of Northland.

At the end there is a cafe selling homemade pies. Delicious!

We hired bikes though Top Trail and was pleased with the bikes and pick up/drop off. Would recommend as a day trip from Paihia or an excursion while exploring the area.

My wife and I hired bikes from Top Trail Hire ($55 each) and rode the Twin coast Cycle Trail from Kaikohe to Okaihau a distance of 20km.

Excellent bikes and equipment including hats. Top Trail Hire will pick you up or you turn up at there depot. They then transport you to the start of the trail.

Very easy ride suitable for all ages who want a relaxing two hours cycling through the countryside. No large hill or difficult riding. Very quiet and very peaceful. There were only 7 others on the trail when we were on it.

The track follows an old railway line. You go through a tunnel, in which there are n lights so it gets very dark half way through.

You finish at the cafe at Okaihau, from where Top Trail pick you up and return you to Kaikohe.

We took our time and stopped to admire the views and it took us two and half hours.

An excellent way to spend a morning or afternoon.

A pleasant ride but scenery disappointing. Waterfall was just water from a drain pipe and the lake was quite distant in views. Tunnel fun to go through. Coffee poor at the destination also. We however still enjoyed the day with 6 of us.
