Magic Cottages at Takou River
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 19 February 2012

Anna and Ian are the best hosts we've ever had with a beautiful property and relaxing environment. We stayed at the Summer Cottage which had everything we needed for the kitchen or for grilling out on the deck. The kayaks were great with awesome scenery as you head out to the bay along the river and had a beach completely to ourselves. Anna and Ian also have a marked path that takes about 45 min- hour depending on your walking pace that takes you throughout the property with the chance encountering of some of the livestock. Definitely recommend having a vehicle for the location as you can take day trips to the surrounding areas (we took scuba lessons in Paihia, although there is a closer dive shop to their place). Multiple activities are available with horse back riding nearby, kayaking, swimming, hiking, scuba, and likely more that we just didn't have time to find. The cottages would be great for couples or a family, although if your expecting to stay hooked to technology- this isn't the place for you. If you need help with finding things to do, hosts are happy to welcome you in their home with a cup of coffee and show you what you can do or tell them what you are looking to do and they will help you find it. If I could just live there, I would be in a slice of heaven!

Our family of 4, 2 adults and 2 kids aged 7 and 10, stayed at River Cottage for 4 nights and throughly enjoyed ourselves. The location has a little bit of something for everyone. Peace and tranquility in a romantic setting if you just want to sit back and relax, read a book on the deck, watch (and listen to) the myriads of birds both native and introduced in the beautiful gardens, or take a private outdoor bath (all uninterrupted by the constant pinging and beeping of modern life as there is no mobile coverage - hooray !). But you're not totally disconnected either. There is a phone in the communal office that is available to guests, where you will also find a PC and wireless modem (wireless internet does stretch to the cottages themselves) as well as a good supply of puzzles, games, books and DVDs for use in the cottages.
On the other hand, for those for whom sitting still is not their idea of a holiday, there was a great swimming hole 5 minutes up-river, lovely walks among the gardens and surrounding farmland, a secluded beach 25 mins away by kayak (kayaks and lifejackets provided), a jetty just begging you to use the provided fishing rod to reel in some fish (we caught a small bream - put it back - and a much larger and uglier eel - also returned to whence it came).
Add to that the proximiy of Keri Keri for provisions and restaurants as well as a couple of decent vineyards within a 20 minute drive South, some great beaches with spectacular views over the Cavalli Islands just 20 minutes North, and great walks through the Puketi Forest 20 minutes West to view some old growth Kauri forest, and it really is hard to beat this place.
We found Ian and Anna (the owners) and their lovely children extremely friendly and hospitable. They provided us advice on where to go and what to do both on the property and in the local surrounds and were exceedingly patient with us when we enquired about all of their sustainable living practices on the property. Our respective kids struck up quite a friendship too !
All in all, we had a great time and will have no hesitataion in going back there.

Do yourself a favour. Stay here. What a beautiful slice of New Zealand. Takou River is lovely. My new wife Lisa and I stayed 5 nights in the Lodge for our Honeymoon. We explored every inch of Takou River. From secluded swimming areas to a lovely 1 hour walk we couldn't fault this place. We had a rental car so we were able to explore Keri Keri and quite a few highlights of Northland New Zealand. Congratulations Anna and Ian on a beautiful property and outstanding hospitality.

We stayed with our three kids for 7 nights in the spacious and very comfortable river lodge. We had a great time there and we enjoyed the beautiful garden around the lodge, the sea-kayaks (go fishing) and the chimney in the evenings. Our friendly host Tadjoe gave us useful informations about activities and sights in the surroundings (e.g. walks, horse trekking...)
It was a highlight of our NZ-journey.

My wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at the Magic Cottage. What a perfect romantic getaway - stunning location, well equipped cottage, beautiful gardens to wonder around, kayaks to explore the river & beach, finished off by relaxing in the claw foot bath.
Highly recommended.

My partner and I recently spent the weekend at the river cottage and it was absolutely fantastic. I would reccommend to anyone who is considering a stay of any length at Takou Bay. The privacy and tranquility cannot be matched and the accomodation is extremely comfortable, with great kitchen and bbq for cooking dinner. The owner is very easy to deal with and hugely helpful and we were greeted by Tadjoe who was able to tell us lots about the local area, where to eat, where to go see etc etc. We followed nearly all of his advice and everything he suggested was excellent.

I could not reccommend this more highly! We will definitely be visiting again with our friends!
