We have stayed in dozens of b & b's all over the world & Moon Gate Villa is a shining example of how it should be done. The tasteful decor, scrumptious breakfasts, gloriously comfortable bed, beautiful garden, attention to detail all topped off with our hosts, Lionel & Rob, for whom nothing was too much trouble. We stayed for 4 nights & will return if we ever find ourselves in that part of New Zealand again.

Wifey and I are in the habit of taking short, relaxing breaks from our very busy lives, and for our most recent we choose Moon Gate Villa in Northern New Zealand.
As a couple who just wanted to have lazy mornings, enjoy the guest lounge with a book, and 'perhaps potter to a winery or two just to say that we had left the lodge' - Moon Gate Villa was the perfect choice, which had come recommended by friends.
Whilst the Cottage accommodation onsite is a great option for the busy sight-seeing (and perhaps more budget conscious) traveler, staying in one of the Premium suites was the right choice for us - so much space, attention to detail, and room to relax! We never felt like we were getting in our hosts way, and certainly weren't rushed at all.
Since this is boutique accommodation, Lionel has been able to afford the time ensuring that quality and attention to detail are spot on with every aspect of the Villa; and revels in his role as host and providor of local free-range in-season produce. Breakfast really does set you up for the day!
We would happily recommend Moon Gate Villa to anyone looking to spoil themselves for a short break away - arrive hungry and wanting to be pampered! The hosts, accommodations, and services provided are all befitting the excellent reviews Moon Gate Villa has already received here. Well done to Rob and Lionel - thoroughly deserved praise for the standards you have set.

The one comment for other travelers about Bay of Islands - if you are only coming to this part of New Zealand, we would strongly recommend flying into the local airport from Auckland. Given the nature of New Zealand roads, it is up to a four hour journey by car -- it was great to do it once - but when we return (and we shall!), we will fly and take Lionel up on his offer of collecting us from the airport.

As a final word, Moon Gate Villa is conveniently set on the way into KeriKeri and is a very short distance from most of the local restaurants - some of which even offer a shuttle service - location, location, location!

Room Tip: Spoil yourself and go the Premium rooms - how often do you treat yourself?

My husband and I returned home to the USA a few weeks ago, after six months exploring all over New Zealand. Predictably, many of our friends have asked about our travel and experiences there, where we stayed, our favorite places, and so on. Perhaps not so predictably, the place that keeps floating to the top of our list of favorite places to stay (and tied for #1) is Moon Gate Villa in Kerikeri. As wonderful as the website and photos are, the reality of the place is even more remarkable. The design makes it both open yet cozy, modern yet warmly welcoming, and it’s the perfect home base for exploring Kerikeri itself and venturing a bit further to the Bay of Islands or further north. We stayed for four nights, and our room was fantastic— aesthetically appealing, immaculate and very spacious with a gorgeous bathroom with every amenity imaginable, and with fantastic views of the gardens, lush landscaping and reflective pools (from now on I’ll never think of water features on a property without thinking of Moon Gate Villa!) Lionel and Rob simply couldn’t be better hosts or more accommodating and helpful, from making reservations for us for dinner, arranging outings, and generally providing us a home away from home. It was raining one morning while we were there, and Lionel even walked us to the road, umbrella in hand, to wait with us for our bus to arrive for a tour! The breakfasts were fantastic—continental, or luscious full cooked, with mouth-watering croissants each morning. Oh, and we were treated to delectable chocolates each evening as part of their turn-down service. We were treated so warmly and wonderfully by Lionel and Rob that when we departed, we felt as though we were leaving dear friends. Moon Gate Villa is a bit of magic.

We spent one night on our honeymoon trip in Moon Gate. The place is beautiful, it is a luxury accomodation, rooms are wide and very well equipped, the runners are very nice.
Unfortunately we couldn't enjoy the staying because we arrived very late in the evening (and the runner was there, waiting and welcoming us despite the delay and the terrible rain!) and it rained all night long and all the morning after.
We noticed that there's a small pool and beautiful gardens.
Breakfast is delicious.

this charming B&B is well located just off the main road into town. The beautifully maintained gardens surrounding the property create a haven of tranquility and as you enter the driveway you feel as though you are in the middle of the countryside.
After a great welcome from Lionel we walked through the door of the lodge to be met by an indoor stream running through the hallway. Very unusual and it immediately gave a very relaxing feel to the atmosphere of the Lodge.
The rooms are large, beautifully furnished with contemporary bathrooms. Lovely sitting areas both in the rooms and the garden terraces adjoining the rooms. Good size plasma TVs, lovely wooden floors, free wi-fi and full sized VERY comfortable beds. Delicious breakfasts in a lovely dining room overlooking the gardens. Could have had in our rooms.
They have truly thought of everything.
]Thank you Lionel and Rob - you deserve every success.

Room Tip: had the 2 rooms in the main lodge - perfect for 2 friends travelling together as they are next to ea...

Moon Gate Villa was the perfect choice for our stay in Kerikeri, Lionel and Rob are delightful and knowledgeable hosts. We chose to stay in the summer cottage which was very private and comfortable, with everything you could possibly want.I loved having a chat to Rob when he delivered our breakfast basket each evening - more than enough for breakfast each day.
Beautiful gardens and surrounds, very relaxing.
