“So very quiet and peaceful-serene”

Totally the place to go to relax in peaceful surroundings. No animals - just nature at its best. Removed from the rest of the planet set out on an isthmus amongst mother nature.

“kiwi and other wildlife on the doorstep”
Reviewed 24 March 2012

this is an outstanding conservation project on a small island in the Kerikeri area linked by a causeway - the site has excellent walks and can accommodation tents and travelling vans if you wish to stay and stand a chance of seeing kiwi at night

“Aroha Island - very picturesque and peaceful spot”
Reviewed 31 August 2011

Recently my husband and I spent a long weekend caravanning on Aroha Island. What a lovely spot - very picturesque and very peaceful. The island is 12km from Kerikeri township and sits in the Kerikeri Inlet joined to the mainland by a 100-metre causeway. The camp is under Department of Conservation management, and managers - a charming and very knowledgeable English couple - live on-site. There are non-powered sites right on the waterfront and powered site on the next level up from the beach, all surrounded by beautiful native bush. There are lots of things to do and see around Kerikeri but at night on the island, it's exciting to go out kiwi-spotting. We were provided with LED torches with red lights, bright enough to show us the way around the island's tracks, but also essential for the kiwi. The birds are frightened by the white light of a normal torch but not of the red light. We were very fortunate to spot three kiwi during our first night, but not so lucky on the other nights, although we could hear them calling. Camp facilities include an ablution block with toilets and hot showers, a wee kitchen with sink and fridge (but no cooking facilities) barbecue and picnic tables under a fabulous shade sail. So if you are looking for a quiet, peaceful getaway (outside of school holidays when the camp is quite busy) we recommend you visit Aroha Island. Take walking shoes, wading shoes and definitely your camera. Happy spotting!
