Wharepuke Subtropical Accommodation
Reviewed 13 May 2011

This was definitely one of the best places we have stayed in. Amazing surroundings in a subtropical garden, excellent accommodation, extremely friendly and helpful manager and affordable prices. The restaurant next door is pretty good too.
I could not ask for anything better than this.
Definitely we will stay at the same hotel in our next holiday in Kerikeri.

We travel quite a fair bit each year. When we travel to places like Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the UK (and any other place where English is widely spoken) we like to stay in self contained clean accommodation, in quiet tranquil surroundings, and sleep in comfy beds. Wharepuke Subtropical Accommodation met all these requirements.

We stayed for two nights in Cottage 5 (a one-bedroom eco cottage) at the Wharepuke Subtropical Accommodation (NZD150 per night). Tania, the manager, is a lovely, friendly, helpful person who made us feel welcome very quickly. The cottage was situated within a lovely garden and had a spacious living area and a bedroom with a large bed. The washroom was spacious, with a good sized shower area. The only thing I did not like was the relatively small washbasin. The private patio was a wonderful place to sit at dusk and watch the sky darken. Better yet, to have the BBQ set up and dine right on the patio! Mussels were in season and cheap and we never got a chance to try the award winning restaurant on the premises because we spent two nights having fun barbequeing mussels and lamb chops and having them with white, and then red (New Zealand) wine!!

Right across the entrance to the car park is a path that leads to the Stone Store (15-20 mins walk), and then from there we went on the trail to Rainbow Falls. If one took the road, it would only take about 7 minutes to reach the Stone Store from the accommodation.

A short drive took us into Kerikeri town centre, where we bought our provisions - and mussels - from the New World Supermarket.

To sum up: this was a delightful, comfortable stay and we would have no hesitation in recommending it to fellow travellers.

We loved staying here in our individual cottage, so peaceful just the noise of the subtropical garden to keep us company. Very helpful staff and a fantastic restaurant on the site.

We spent 2 nights at Wharepuke and had such a lovely, relaxing time. The cottages are surrounded by lush gardens and even though we were near everything we needed, we felt tucked away in our own tropical haven. The perfect place to sit out on the deck and read a book undisturbed. It took us 10mins to walk into Kerikeri itself which is a nice town and less than that to walk down to the Stone Store. There is a nice spot to sit and have a drink looking out at the bay. Had a good walk to the Rainbow falls along the river. We ate both nights at the on site restaurant (see review of Wharepuke food). It was fabulous! An absolutely awesome chef, fanstastic menu and felt like I was sitting in some secluded restaurant in Thailand. Spot on.

Food excellent! Bedding excellent! Gardens and surroundings excellent!

The cottages were a joy to stay in. Plenty of privacy and well equipped.

The food at the onsite restaurant was EXCELLENT! Probably some of the best cuisine I have ever tasted. A mix of Thai and western cooking which provided an interesting texture and flavour.

Close walk to the history basin, a really relaxing and peaceful experience.

Location of the property is perfect, not too close too the city centre but within walking distance of shops, restaurants and craft businesses. Property is planted with sub tropical plants and it's interesting to see some unusual plants and mature palms that are well cared for and growing around the cottages that are attractive and comfortable.
Restaurant on site has Thai and European food and found the desserts to be imaginative and especially taste challenging.
Mark Graver has a studio where he prints woodblocks with non toxic paint and he is well known around the world for his instruction on his chosen subject.

When several talented people come together on a project then you know you are in for something very special. Tania and Mark's 'Garden Paradise' has luxury eco accomodation, an International Print Studio and Art Gallery. This is all complimented by the fabulous family run Thai Reastaurant headed by Chef Colin Ashton. If you enjoy indulging ALL your senses there's a feast waiting for you at Wharepuke.
