We stayed 4 nights in a chalet at Kerigold 5 years ago, and returned for another 4-night stay in December 2007. The property is as well-tended now as it was then. Our chalet had a queen bed in a separate bedroom, bathroom with shower, open living room, dining area, and kitchenette. The self-service, free-standing chalets are private, pleasant, quiet, and located in attractive grounds that have grown more lush since our last visit. Downtown is a few blocks away; a fine bakery with restaurant is next door. A welcome service available to guests is use of the laundry on an honor basis. We looked forward to revisiting the restaurant at Marsden Winery just west of town, and were not disappointed. Lunch and dinner here are superb, and the wine is good, too. We enjoyed equally memorable dinners at nearby Ake Ake Winery. Ake Ake features wines from many vintners, including their own. Try the rose. It's a cut above. The Bay of Islands is a beautiful area. What drew us back most strongly were memories of walking in kauri forests. This time we walked in Puketi Forest, easily accessible from Kerikeri, and drove to the west coast on back roads to walk and picnic again in the 8.35 acre Trounson Kauri Park, an unlogged kauri forest and a refuge for endangered species. Kerikeri is a wonderful base from which to explore the Bay of Islands area.
