“My favorite hotel”
Reviewed 17 July 2014

This is our 4th year in a row going here. This time they had a new front desk manager (Darnell Smith) I gave him my name and he told me they had been expecting us and our rooms were waiting. REALLY made us feel welcome. Our first visit here 4 years ago had a lot of hiccups, but the staff more than made up for it and always invites us to return. I recommend the concierge service, they have a great breakfast, evening appetizer and desert too. Also they have adjoining rooms if you want, (great when we take the kids along) just request them. There's the ferry boat outside the hotel that runs until 11 at night I think, $3.00 round trip per person. We truly love this hotel.

GREAT VIEW!!! Request river view!!!!

There's a bar and restaurant in the lobby, GREAT quality food and service of course.

Room Tip: request river view, also in my room (15th) floor I was able to connect to the free "lobby"...

We stayed for two nights at this hotel to celebrate our 7-year anniversary. The check-in and check-out was a breeze. The staff were very friendly and helpful. One particular desk agent was extra helpful when I got separated from my hubby and couldn't get in touch with him due to cell phone issues. We needed a couple of things from housekeeping and they responded in a timely manner. I've seen reviews that talked about the hotel being "outdated" but I didn't find it to be that. There were some decors of the hotel that seemed a bit old but it is after all called Renaissance Hotel. But the facility was well-kept and I found it to be very beautiful. The lounge area, restaurant and business center was nice. And once you walk out there's a beautiful view of the Elizabeth River and it is very convenient to where you catch the ferry. As for the room, it was nice and comfortable. The bed was super comfortable and hard to get out of because it was just so nice to sleep in. The only complaint I do have is that there is a bit of an "old" smell in our room in certain areas (maybe the wall or furniture). Oh and the Wi-Fi is unstable (but no big deal to me). Other than that, we had a spectacular stay. We will definitely stay at this hotel if/when we come back to the area.

Room Tip: Choose a higher floor room and ask for the view of the river. It is beautiful!

Stayed here overnight before going to the outer banks. A detour in downtown Portsmouth flummoxed the GPS so we had to drive around for about an hour before finding the hotel. Parking was in a garage adjacent to the hotel and cost $10 which they tacked onto the bill. It is an unusually long walk from the front doors to the check in counter. The hotel itself is beautiful and is in a beautiful location, the waterfront is just feet from the building with a nice little park area you can stroll along. Desk people were pleasant and check in was quick and without incident. There a small sundries shop beside the front desk. Prices are typically outrageous ($3 for a 20oz. soda). Rooms were nice and very clean with fantastic view of the river. Beds were comfy. Water pressure in the shower was great and we were on the ninth floor. Woke up before the family and took my laptop down to the common area (extra charge for room wifi) to knock out a few work obligations. Great signal and speed. Other than the detour which, of course, wasn't the hotels fault, we had a fine if short stay. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for river view.

My fiancee and I stayed at the Renaissance for the weekend of my birthday. The hotel is a little older, but it's been very well taken care of. We stayed in a double room -- though we thought it was supposed to be a king, and it was plenty comfortable. The bathroom was the place were you could tell this was an older hotel, there were a few chips on the tile floor, but it was very clean and tidy. The beds were comfortable, and the only thing that I didn't like too much were the euro pillows -- but that's mostly because I'm not used to them. The view was very nice, and we were within walking distance of a few places to eat, and a nice waterfront area.

This hotel is really pretty. The petty fees are what make it pretty ugly. The first thing is a charge for internet. This is a Marriott property, Marriott is not hurting that bad for money and I think everyone can agree to that. They charge $10.00 per night for parking. We arrived at 12:00 am technically the next day $10.00 charged for parking. I have stayed at Holiday Inn' s free internet, Comfort Inn free internet, why the charge. The staff at the hotel is very accommodating. I called and arranged to have room service dinner in the room for our arrival Towanna took care of this everything was wonderful! There are no real bells, and whistles at the hotel, the lobby is very pretty. Because of the petty fees I'll never stay here again. Nice but no thanks!

Room Tip: When paying for waterfront ask not to have the room facing the ship yard

Green Features: They ask you to decide if you want clean towels, this is an ok idea. Would like to see trash bags in the trash cans.

On behalf of Renaissance Portsmouth Hotel management and staff, thank you for providing feedback about your recent stay. I completely understand the frustration of being charged for items that are used daily. We are looking at other options at this time.

Visited this hotel June 20-22 for a family member's wedding and we were very pleased. We were able to use "Free Night Certificates" courtesy of Marriott Rewards. Hotel is located on the river front and in the down town area of Portsmouth which allows you to be within walking distance to some of the downtown establishments. The rooms were clean and included your basic needs while away from home including refrigerator, coffee maker, and iHome. The Front desk attendant was very helpful with questions and dinning recommendations. We did visit the "Foggy Point Grill" on two occasions (breakfast and Lunch). The breakfast buffet offered a wide variety of choices from omelets, to pastries, to fresh fruit. The Crab dip and chips are a must for lunch. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would visit again if in the area.

From the doorman to front desk, (the few employees we met), all were helpful. Room had impressive view of the river. Hotel is big and perhaps better for business but rather cavernous during a summer holiday week. The nearby historic old town is attractive.
