While down for VT graduation last weekend I convinced my family to make the drive from Blacksburg (15-20 min) down here. I had only been here for a alumni event with a catered dinner, and couldn't recall if the food was great or not. So I warned them of that, along with the bad service reviews here on TA.
It was a bit of a gamble since they wouldn't take a reservation or call ahead, but we figured it was still worth a shot to avoid the crowds in BBurg and Christiansburg. It worked out great, while they said the wait at 6pm friday night could be an hour, we only waited about 15 minutes for a table for 7 + a toddler, which was barely enough time to enjoy the great views off the back deck. They spared no expense building this place, the ambiance is awesome!
We sat down and the server took our order and had the drinks out pretty quickly. He didn't seem very experienced but was nice and upfront (mentioning no substitutions since it was a busy friday) and did check on my mother-in-laws food allergy right away. It wasn't the fastest meal but we weren't in any rush so didn't mind at all. We were leaving about an hour after sitting down.
Now too the food: The wedge salad was great and plenty to split between 2 people. I split that with my wife, along with the filet and sweet potato fries and a side of mashed potatoes. Filet was cooked perfect and the dipping sauce for the fries was great (some sort of sour cream/brown sugar mix). The 2 sirloins ordered at the table were very good, and a burger looked really good (although overcooked since mom-in-law ordered well done, what do you expect). The chicken tenders for my toddler didn't come out early, but we had other food to tide her over with.
We tried several beers, and I enjoyed the Amber the best. Not enough to take a growler with me but still good enough to get a 2nd.
