“A restful stop at the end of a busy work day”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 April 2014

After a long drive and a long meeting, I was so happy to find myself at Ma Margaret's beautiful bed and breakfast. Situated on peaceful acreage, the rooms were filled with everything a weary business traveler needs. I slept like a baby! In the morning, I was treated to a gourmet breakfast and would be embarrassed to tell you how much I ate! But, the real treat was meeting Pam. I've never known such gracious hospitality and feel that I've made a friend for life. I'll definitely return whenever I'm in the area.

...that's how we felt during our stay at Ma Margaret's! Of course we were the only people staying that evening, so we got very special attention from Pam, who takes care of Miss Alva's beautifully-restored home!

Our accommodations were very comfortable and the breakfast was truly one of the best we've ever had at a B & B! Those honey butter biscuits are killer!

If you seek quiet and serenity, this is the place for you! And the price is right!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Sydnor Room- small but more than adequate for a couple.

Recently stayed at Ma Margaret's for a ministers retreat. The service was excellent, staff was wonderful! I love how each room had its own theme. I will definitely be returning and have recommended to several friends already. Loved seeing the history behind the house also!

We decided to stay here to attend my 40th Northumberland High School class reunion celebration in Kilmarnock. Although there are hotels and B&B's in Kilmarnock, Ma Margaret's offered more space and a better value than renting 2 hotel rooms and buying breakfast off site. I was reluctant about B&B's in the area based on a prior B&B experience in Heathsville, but we were not disappointed. The renovated historic home is the perfect blend of historic flavor and modern convenience. And for breakfast we were treated to a breakfast crab cake, along with other entrees including a lovely fruit combination. The meal was served on fine china with fresh coffee and tea, at a gorgeous dining room table. We enjoyed meeting the other guests there. Alva and her staff were able to accommodate my husband's gluten free diet by providing a breakfast of scrambled eggs, gluten free toast, and home fries carefully prepared to avoid cross contamination with wheat products in the kitchen. The accommodations afforded us a good night's sleep, modern en suite restrooms, and free toiletries that were well chosen. A visit to the upstairs front porch was a nice way to start the morning. The living room contains lovely antiques, and a book about the history of Northumberland County. The location is convenient to most locations in the county, situated between Lilian and Reedville. I would definitely stay here again before going to other B&B's in the area or staying at the Holiday Inn.

My husband and I just spent 3 nights at Ma Margaret's House. We had the Sydnor Room, which is probably the smallest room in the house. This was our request, we didn't feel the need for a suite. The room was clean and tastefully decorated. It had it's own thermostat which was nice. We arrived on Wed. by Pam. She greeted us and showed us around. My husband had called ahead to tell them about his Gluten intolerance issue and when we got there Pam confirmed that they were on top of the Gluten situation. The breakfast was hearty. Fresh fruit, oj, coffee, tea, eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, pancakes one day, waffles the next. Pam purchased special ingredients and made the pancakes and waffles GF which was greatly appreciated. We were the only guests in the place during our stay which was different. It made for a very quiet stay and our breakfasts were private. Saturday morning we met Alva, the owner who made a breakfast of fresh fruit, oj, coffee, tea, eggs, hash browns, salmon cake (gluten free) bacon and a fancy gluten free cornbread. We ate every crumb. We ended out visit by getting our picture taken in front of the "LOVE" sign in front of the place.

All in all this is a nice bed and breakfast. There was some confusion when my sister and I arrived as we were told we were staying in a different room than what I had reserved. In all fairness the innkeeper was not there when we arrived and we were eventually directed to the correct room.
Our room "The Lewis" was very comfortable with two double beds, our own patio overlooking the back yard and an en suite bath. Soap, shampoo and conditioner was available in addition to a large TV with cable. The beds were very comfortable and the room was bright so if you like the dark wear an eye mask.
Breakfast was average eggs, bacon, potatoes and fruit. It is a nice place to stay in Reedville and Alva is very friendly and will tell you history about the house in addition to supplying you with places to dine and discounts but I was not blown away.

Room Tip: Bring water bottles as there is not a guest fridge for your use.

Thank you for your review. Ma Margaret's House is not about bacon and eggs, as much as it is about sharing in an experience of nearly a century long of hospitality that was once offered to people in the community and now open to traveling guest. I welcome any comments that you may have as to how we could have made your stay more enjoyable. I receive comment through the website or email.

Sincerely,
Alva

We stayed 2 nights in June, and couldn't have been more pleased. The home is lovely, beautifully decorated, and the service was top notch. We recommend the local wineries for tasting (especially Athena's and Dog and Oyster), and the two restaurants (Horn Harbor, Crazy Crab) were great! We are looking for an excuse to do it again. Thanks Alva and Pam. Les and Marsha

Room Tip: We stayed in the Jackson Suite which was gorgeous.
