Attraction details
Owner description: We promote an appreciation and understanding of animal and habitat preservation through the use of quality exhibits and educational programs. Mill Mountain Zoo was founded in 1952 as a nursery-rhyme themed petting zoo that featured farm animals, birds, and native Virginia wildlife. For the first twenty-five years, we were operated by Roanoke's Parks and Recreation Department. In 1978, the Roanoke Jaycees renewed the zoo and replaced old exhibits to create a place appealing to all ages. Governance was turned over to the Blue Ridge Zoological Society of Virginia, Inc. in 1988 (more commonly known as Mill Mountain Zoo). In the early 1990's, a citizens' committee created a master plan for exhibitions, visitor amenities, and expansion of the site to our current eight acres. Other improvements included new exhibits and an upgrade of infrastructure. In 1995, Mill Mountain Zoo first received accreditation from the AZA, which sets the highest standards in the nation for zoos. Of our nation's 2,000 government-licensed animal exhibition facilities, only about 200 qualify for AZA accreditation. AZA membership also provides a network of zoological expertise and reciprocal member arrangements with zoos across the country. Within Virginia, only four AZA accredited facilities exist-Mill Mountain Zoo in Roanoke, the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center in Virginia Beach, the Virginia Living Museum and the Virginia Zoological Park in Norfolk.

“Cute Small Zoo”

The zoo isn't large. It is a nice activity to do with the kids. The exhibits are small so it is easy to see the animals. The staff was all nice. The zoo has a small train to ride around the outside of the zoo which was nice too.

“Nice Time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2014

I wanted something to do for a day for my grandsons. I remembered Mill Mountain Zoo. This is a 2 hour drive from us so it made a wonderful day trip. It had been around 30 years since I took my kids here and things have changed on top of the mountain. There is a little playground and park type setting, walking trails, of course the Star and overlook and the Zoo. I didn't tell the kids where we were going, it was a surprise. When the 5 year old seen Zoo he was very excited. They have a nice selection of animals and birds. True, it's not a big zoo, but plenty nice. All the animals seemed well cared for, their enclosures were clean and the whole park was clean. Then they rode the little train and loved this. The 2 year old didn't want to get off, he wanted to keep riding. I would recommend this to anyone who is just looking for a way to spend the day.

“Nice adventure...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2014

During our road trip around VA, we made a point to visit this Zoo because it has a "Choo-choo train" which our 2-yr old LOVES.

Although we found it a little pricey (note that the train ride is not included in the entrance ticket), we had fun walking around and taking pictures.

A few of the attractions were closed, other things need better maintenance.
On a good note, the animals that are there, are well taken care of. They look healthy :) We enjoyed going in the birds area and loved the beautiful Lynx and the Red Panda. :)

The drive to the park is very nice! :)

“Nice little zoo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 April 2014

Fog had thwarted our view from the Mill Mountain Star overlook, so we had some time to visit the zoo.

While this zoo is relatively small, it has a nice variety of birds, animals, and reptiles.

The big attractions were the snow leopard and red panda.

It was a cold and foggy day when we visited so we were not bothered by crowds.

“Wonderful setting, even more wonderful for kids”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 April 2014

We first visited Mill Mountain Children's Zoo almost 30 years ago when our daughter was nine or ten and dreaming about one day becoming a veterinarian (she's now in banking, has found her niche, and promoted to VP, where she works on behalf of Phoenix Childen's Hospital as a volunteer). Mill Mountain Children's Zoo really is on a relatively flat-topped mountain (in the West we would call it a mesa) a few hundred feet above Roanoke -- wonderful view, but the children and animals are what are great to watch. Already an animal lover, she interacted compassionately and intelligently with her new-found, four-legged friends. This attraction ranks with Gladys Porter Zoo (Brownsville, Texas) and few others, then or now. Highly recommended.
