“Star City Star!”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Mill Mountain Star park is a great place to take visiting relatives and family and well, just anyone. If you live here you should go take a gander. You can actually prearrange a rendezvous with someone as the star has a web cam, so you can sit on the bench and wave to folks anywhere in the world online! They have a lookout /bump out thingy where you can see Roanoke and the whole valley. They also have spy glasses to look even further. Very interesting.

“Mountaintop getaway close to the city”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

The history goes back to 1949, when the Roanoke Merchants Association was looking for a holiday decoration to entice shoppers to the Roanoke Valley. They obviously hit the jackpot when the switch was thrown on Thanksgiving Eve of that year and the Mill Mountain Star came to life.
Although the original plan was to dismantle the 88.5 foot structure, that idea was quickly scrapped and the star remains today, giving Roanoke the nickname " The Star City of the South ".
The star sits 1,045 feet above the city, weighs 5 tons and is visible from air for 60 miles.
It's the world's largest freestanding man-made star, lit nightly by 2,000 feet of colored neon tubing.
The star is accessible by car from Walnut Ave. near downtown Roanoke, or via the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway.
The surrounding Mill Mountain Park has it's own array of attractions. The Mill Mountain Zoo is located on the mountaintop, complete with a children's miniature train that circles the zoo complex. Nearby are overlooks to the City of Roanoke and a popular picnic area open to the public.
A popular summer activity is to go to the overlook in front of the star after dark and view the lit star up close, or enjoy looking at the lights of Roanoke below.

“Great for young kids”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Our family visited here a few weeks ago and it was the perfect day trip for a family with young children. The zoo is very small (so don't expect much), however with a 3 year old and 6 year old their attention span does not last long and it was perfect for them. The walk to the star was an easy walk and allowed them to get their energy out. Small play area with picnic tables were good for lunch.

You are never too young or too old to see the Star of Roanoke. When friends or I come to visit this is a highlight of our trip.

“A hidden gem...”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Nice walking trails and picnic tables. The lookout is amazing to see the city from that high up, however it tends to get busy and you may sometimes have a hard time finding a spot on the lookout deck to check out the view.
