“tries to be what it was”
Reviewed 8 June 2009

I grew up in nearby coalfields and always thought of this place as the ultimate luxury hotel. Va Tech and Hilton have done a credible job recreating past elegance-but the place just misses. Rooms are fine, very comfortable bed, bathroom fine, lobby and public areas have old look, but conference center detracts for casual guest ambiance. This aspect, including many conferees running about , is probably a necessary price to pay for the place being reopened at all. The brightest spot is classic dining room, complete with traditional dogwood pattern china and white coated waitstaff. The menu is what it was-Peanut soup, SheCrab soup, various traditional seafood and meat entrees. Food was excellent.
The overall negative is overprice.4/5 star price for 3 star overall experience. We still enjoyed a brief return to yesteryear.

I love the idea of this hotel -- and old railroad hotel next to downtown. The check in experience was less than positive. Long wait. When I asked desk clerk where I could buy a bottle of wine, she said "Krogers" a five mile drive away. I followed up and asked if there wasn't anything in downtown, a few blocks walk away. She said no. It was 4:15 in the afternoon.

We walked downtwon and found three wine shops two blocks from the hotel.

The room was nice but they charged $10 for use of the internet. Amazing when every other hotel we've stayed in provided it for free -- and most of these hotels aren't as expensive as the Hotel Roanoke.

I stayed here for business. The room was well appointed, clean quiet and large. The bed as comfortable. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The toiletries were fabulous and included facial cleanser and a shower cap. The cookies on the pillow were an additional bonus. Room service was prompt and reasonable.

This was my first time at this Hotel since I am a local resident . I was amazed at the setting of all the halls and lounge area as it had a lot of local history in photos, pictures , and displays. This hotel is used a lot for conferences so it can get crowded at times but since it has many conference and banquet halls, that is to be expected. I was pleased with my room and the furnishings. The work out area has all the latest equipment and the pool, spa area was also very pleasant. This spot is perfect for like a weekend getaway although it can get pricey for certain rooms and meals.

I have stayed at this hotel on several occasions over the last couple of years and have watched the service take a dive while the prices have become outrageous. If you are not planning to pay for valet parking ($12.00) now, you can plan to walk 1/4 mile to the hotel entrance, something I am not comfortable with at night. Internet costs $9.95 per night (free at other hotels in the area) and business casual dress is required for the dining room, so it's not a casual stay. Making a reservation and getting what you reserved it a nightmare, one that is a common problem. You make the reservation, get there and find that they don't have that and put you in something else. The rooms are usually small and noisy, especially if you are facing the train tracks, good luck on a quiet night. I'm not sure if they are under new management or not, but over the past six months the service has become unbelievable, they just don't care. If you question something or complain, you will be met with flat rudeness. Double check your bill because you will be charged for things that you did not use/buy. After a recent visit, I decided it would be my last stay there. It's not worth the money when you can get the same conveniences close by for free and with much better service. I am a gold member so I have spent a lot of time at different Hilton hotels, this one has quickly become one of my least favorites. It is a beautiful hotel to see, but it is not what it sets itself up to be.

The lobby alone is worth the visit. And the rooms are top-notch with beautiful linens and comfortable beds. This is not a Ritz-Carlton, but it is a Hilton with the Hilton style. You could go to Roanoke and stay at the Holiday Inn at the mall but I have no idea why. This hotel has history and class and an above-ground-over-the-railroad walkway right to the historic downtown with its shops and restaurants. My kids were happy too. Not stuffy, just historic. Stay here.
