“Beautiful hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2010

We went to the Hotel Roanoke for my cousin's wedding. The food in the banquet hall was nothing special. However, the breakfast buffet in the dining room was quite delectable. The breakfast was included as part of the Great Getaway package. There were multiple hot items, including made-to-order omelettes. Although the dining room was filled we did not feel crowded, and the buffet was well-stocked.

The hotel room was nice. The air conditioning seemed to push out cold air constantly, so it was a little annoying if you are not used to air conditioning blowing on you constantly. The bathtub had many hairs in it when we arrived, but they were cleaned up after a call to housekeeping. The hallway badly needed vacuuming as we found the same dirt on the floor for the 2 nights we were there.

We figured Bucky Covington was staying at the hotel since a cheese/fruit tray with his name in bold letters was sitting in front of his room for over 24 hours. We had to laugh because they wouldn't give my parents my room number, but it was plain as day to see where a celebrity was staying.

Overall, we had a nice time with family and friends.

We met friends there for a night. Great deal on the rate, unbelievable breakfast!
Hotel is old but very nicely maintained and appointed beautifully.
very close to downtown with convenient walk across the busy road and railroad area for safety.
We loved it here, of all the hotels we've been too it ranks very high.

We had been favourably impressed with a DoubleTree hotel in Phildelphia but nothing prepared us for this wonderful historic hotel. We were greeeted with a smile and our room requests were recognised immediatley at check in. The warm cookie was a nice touch but the warm smile was better (and less calories)
The room was excellent-it is an historic hotel so it wasnt like staying in just any hotel where everything is the same as the last hotel.
We had access to the executive lounge where our hostess was very charming and very keen to chat as we were the only ones in the lounge.
Dinner was quite exceptional-from the warm welcome of the Maitre to the professional but friendly attention from our two waiters and the food was much better than we have had at far more expensive restauarants-And the setting was beautiful
So we had a great experience-the hotel is indeed a must see destination but you know its the people that made our stay such a wonderful experience
Our thanks to all the staff-we will be back

My husband and I spent our wedding night here last year and decided to come back this year on our anniversary. We had a few issues with our room on our wedding night in 2009 and the hotel manager offered to make it up to us and gave us a free dinner for two in the Regency Room next time we were in town. This time around - Upon arrival, we were upgraded to a small suite with 2 rooms and views of St. Andrews Cathedral which was very nice. We received a knock on our door a half and hour after arriving and room service brought up a complimentary platter with cheese & crackers, chocolate covered strawberries, champagne, and fruit. This was such a nice surprise and a big THANK YOU to management for doing that. We really enjoyed this treat while getting ready for dinner. Dinner in the Regency Room was fabulous and we were thoroughly impressed (and my husband is not easy to please since he has worked in the restaurant/hotel industry all over the world). Our server, Michael, and his assistant , Igor, were both excellent and attended to our every need. The Peanut Soup was just as delicious as I remembered and the Land & Sea combo was perfect as was the chocolate souffle. I remember going to the Regency Room for dinner when I was little and it was just as grand and oppulent as I remembered. I loved the 3-piece band and they were kind enough to play our wedding song since it was our anniversary. The bed was very comfortable and we slept very well until a bachelorette party next door decided to make a party in the hallway around 2:30 am and we were woken up several times. I called the front desk and let them know about the disturbance and it was taken care of immediately which we appreciated. Sunday brunch was fabulous and they were kind enough to find a table for us even though we didn't have a reservation. Overall, we were very impressed the second time around and hope to stay there again next year on our 2nd Anniversary. Thank you for making our Anniversary memorable and we hope to see you again next year!!

This is our third trip to this hotel and we enjoy it very much. However, we upgraded to the Executive Level for an extra $30.00 a night. It was not worth it.

We stayed in a room right by the elevator and most people were not to quiet coming out of the elevator, including the hotel personnel with the luggage carts.

Otherwise, it is very convienent to all of the old Downtown area. I'd stay there again, but I won't bother with the up-grade

We had a one night stay to attend a show at the Civic Center - Riverdance. I was able to book a room using my hotel points and was absolutely amazed at the opulence. Fanciest hotel I've stayed at. Loved the special treatment and having a room where access to the hallway was restricted! We used the shuttle to get from the hotel to the Civic Center but found it was close enough to walk back afterward. Breakfast was nice but a little pricey. We were having a wonderful nights sleep until 5:30 am when the fire alarms sounded! A sprinkler had broken and flooded rooms in another part of the hotel but we were all forced to evacuate. It was over an hour before we were allowed back inside and then the alarms in our section of the hotel continued to sound for another 1/2 hour so we were forced to avoid the noise by sitting in the lobby in our pajamas! Hotel staff was short handed at this point but pleasant. I realize this was not their fault and totally unpredictable but they could have given the guests some sort of compensation - free coffee while we waited would have been nice or free breakfast, discount on a return stay, etc. Only complaint we had was that the bathroom was NOT very clean when we checked in. Spills on the sink and down the cabinet, dust, on the floor, etc. Not what I would have expected from this fancy hotel!

Pubic hair in sink, hair ball on floor under desk when I checked in. Carpet is old and worn. Desk was wobbly, one leg too short. Food is bone fide medicore. Service is nothing special. It is clear this was once a great hotel, now it all about the location. As a result, they need't strive for excellence because they so closely associated with the civic center--which by the way is a long walk if its a hot summer day or raining.

I recommend any of the several bed and breakfasts in the area, nearly as close as the HR to the civic center.

VALawyer, thank you for your review of your recent stay. Please know that I will share your comments with our team. I am dissappointed to read your review of the property as we strive daily to provide excellence in our service, operations, and product. We are also concerned about your comment on the carpeting and furnishings as we recently completed a renovation of the property remodeling the entire hotel with new furnishings and carpeting. We are intrigued and eager to learn more about your stay. Sincerely, Gary Walton.
