“a garden”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2008

The great English essayist Francis Bacon once wrote "God Almighty first planted a garden. And indeed it is the purest of human pleasures. It is the greatest refreshment to the spirits of man; without which, buildings and palaces are but gross handiworks; and a man shall ever see, that when ages grow to civility and elegance, men shall come to build stately sooner than to garden finely." Indeed Jean and Craig Stratton's relais in Scottsville, Virginia offers exactly what Bacon was describing - civility and elegance. Set amid acres of fertile ground, Chester is equipped with all the amenities the visitor might come to expect in the most sybaritic of hotels. Apart from gourmet breakfasts and delightful picnic baskets, visitors will find the guest rooms are elegantly apponted with oriental rugs, four poster beds, wood burning fireplaces and naturally, private baths. Here there are luxurious down comforters, plush towels and - always - fresh flowers. The rooms - of which there are five - are climate controlled throughout and guests may relax in luxury to contemplate the natural word outside replete with chicadees, hummingbirds, cardinals attracted to the Strattons' always full bird feeders. Indeed, this is a perfect escape from the everyday toils of workaday existence. Chester is located a stone's throw from Charlottsville and the University of Virginia. In short, Chester is full of civility and elegance.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 December 2007

We stayed at the Chester in early November when the leaves were starting the turn. The only thing we were worried about was the town, but that turned out to be part of the charm. Scottsville is very small, but it has a very good BBQ restaurant and cute small-town tavern.

The inn itself was perfect. It's very old so it has lot's of charm, and the owners have kept it in great shape. Our room was large, with a four-post bed and a wood-buring fireplace. (We picked Chester largely because it is one of the few B&B's near Charlottesville with wood-burning fireplaces in the bedrooms, rather than gas). The common areas of the inn are comfortable and spacious giving you privacy. Breakfast was truly gourmet.

One of the best parts is the owners. They are the definition of excellent B&B owners; very kind, polite, friendly, and helpful. (And their dogs are great.)

We strongly recommend Chester. If you don't need the college-nights of Charlottesville, then it is perfect. A truly beautiful inn run by great people, (and cheaper than the other inns too.)
